There is no such thing as race. Race is a social construct and the more accurate term might be ethnicity, which there is no one gene for. I want humans to be how the are like now, probably extended life maybe.
For health reasons, I think genetic modification would be perfectly fine. However, If someone wanted to modify themselves because they were insecure then that wouldn't be ethically sound. I think in that case people shouldn't try to fit what society thinks is the perfect image.
Well it's good and bad. If that example happened where people got +100 IQ instantly means that actually it becomes normal and thus this makes it seem special now but in the future well we pass on genetics so thus 200+ IQ turns too nothing like your mentally challenged
We are already in the process of improving humans, just for the sake of improving humans. Plastic surgery is a booming business. Changing our genetics for non-health or other serious reasons would just play up on our insecurities making us feel frauds of our real selves. Yes, I would love to have genetics that make me taller, have red hair, and be better at math. But I would feel like I was wearing someone else's skin.
Only number 1 here. and people who raise the angry god who doesn't what us to change ourselves issue , even if there is some sort of higher being id never pray to something that dared to impose rules over me
im completely for genetic modification to take control of our evolution to remove defects and advance iQs and other such traits would only benefit the world , people would be less likely to be sick which would decrease medical bills and costs for everybody and with higher iQs we would be able to solve our biggest problems that much quicker such as the threat of global enviromently collapse , nuclear wars and renewable energy people who raise the question of morality are kidding themselves the o
to change the race of your child? wow. if they did that, that kid would probably have to go through a lot of crap explaining that they werent adopted and that their parents changed them so they would fit in. i think the kid would fit in even less then.
1) No, I don't believe it is ethically sound to genetically modify intelligence, intelligence is given to you at birth. 2) Yes, I believe we should do this to catch up to China, BUT with the lower class and only by 30 or 40 points, it would be cheaper and our average intelligence would be above 130 (and the lowest would be usually be at 80-100, so that way we don't have to invest as much into special ed). 3) I believe modification of race should be allowed, but I wish it wasn't needed 4 success
BUT DAN!Yea it would be a good thing to be able to stop disease and grow body parts for those who need them but if you think about it death is going to happen and because it makes living possible. If we stop death almost completely wouldn't the world become EVEN MORE OVER POPULATED and then things like global warming and oil using would SKYROCKET. As a result of this the world would dig it self i a bigger hole that were already in and then when almost everyone dies all off that is useless.
@liljaysk83r well hypothetically at our present rate of invention/inovation we would find alternative energy sources. and i don't know maybe find a way to move to like mars or something. Just a thought
to the first hypothetical, we already came up with that genetic modification: its called education..... and we ARE facing that specific cultural issue right now in both the international and domestic aspects
And the weapons he is making end up being used to expel the invading forces and save his countrymen then they will look upon him as a hero and yet the people he expelled will look upon him as a villian. Its all relative.
Well I think I shall put in my 2¢ as well. If a person took the IQ enhancer and then proceeded to create WMDs in their basement then it should be outlawed. On the other hand, if that same person dedicated their life to scientific endeavours then it would be fine. The definition of right and wrong for people in general differs based on their point of view. Lets look at an example, the guy who makes the WMDs, if he makes them in his basement when his country is being invaded by another country
Actually, a lot of the world does not hunt in supermarkets, Dan. I know what you were going for, but there ARE still hunter/gatherer societies out there so humanity has not really "found agriculture and never looked back."
Of the two situations, the second is just plain wrong. Discrimination does not mean you should change yourself to conform, it means the people who discriminate are dicks.
The first one is tougher. But can you keep the rich from doing it if they have the means? Probably not
for the first egsample(lol i fail at spelling) i think that if geneticly improving our iq is created and perfected and harmless, people who have already had it done should be trained to do it to other people therefor making it more common and cheaper. once all the people in one place have had it done, expand the procedure to 3rd world countries speeding up their development and possibly solving world hunger. if you find fault with this plan then comment on it but if you like it then thank you.<3
Make the IQ improving thing a public rather than a private good, like roads and street lamps. Then, using a scholarship/grant method based upon both merit and need, provide it to those who could really use it to improve our society as a whole. This is instead of just allowing the wealthy exclusive access to it, which is very similar to how we treat education, because that's essentially what such a thing would be: instantaneous education. And everyone has the right to educational opportunities.
Hypothetically, lets say genetic engineering can significantly increase the lifespan of humans by conquering certain diseases and by improving quality of life. This could potentially cause overpopulation which would cause competition for land and resources and many other problems. I think this would be an interesting thing for you to consider along with your other opinions and scenarios.
Is race in our genes? They could make the child have pale skin, and have more typically Caucasian features, but that's only appearance so a phenotype, and not a genotype. Am I right?
@alwaysliam yeah, but if you ever saw the movie or read the book, you'd know it would be a failure and the dinosaurs would escape because Newman would turn off the electrical fences and the dinosaurs would eat you or you'd somehow escape, yet Jeff Goldblum knew it was all going to happen in the first place and tried to stop it, but Hammond didn't listen.
the thing is we've removed from evolution.... like on purpose. why do it artificially? ALSO, what's the point of living a longer life? this is very troubling to me...
@InThePeanutGallery it's not that there is a point, but WAS a point. just think about it... I'm lazy so I dont want to finish my point right now so this will do I guess
Dan, I know that you are the kind of person who need to take his time to settle everything up before taking an action. Don't you think that we should do the same on genetic modification? Not only on human but with what we eat too? Our research in genetic aren't that advanced to predict exactly what will happen when we do a modification on a gene. And the research we do to proove that there is nothing wrong with it are simply stupid. Look at Monsanto. They only look at the calory equivalency.
Viruses change your DNA as it copies and replaces certain cells with your own. The mechanisms are manipulated by these very essential diseases and is amazing the ability it can do, unfortunately you cannot cure it without dying yourself.. Just like other genetics such as you cannot manipulate melanin without destroying the melanocytes, someone with freckles is usually upset.. Conclusion, genetics are essential and under some circumstances CAN be altered forget the media..
It depends on how we use the IQ boost. If those with a 100 IQ boost help the global society advance, I see no problem with it. Only if you use it in an egoistic purpose, it's wrong...
You can't just increase your IQ with 100 points. The average IQ is 100, by definition. Only 1 out of 10 trillion people have an IQ of 210 or higher, by definition. There is nothing you can change about this. So maybe you can give 1 person a boost of 100 points (e.g. 110 to 210), but this will lower the IQ of all other people. If you give someone else a boost of 100 points too, the IQ of the guy who had 210 points, will decrease.
I actually happen to be one of those people who believe we should live as we were born...in other words, as animals. No laws, no religions, no boundaries...just plain anarchy. On the long run, it would pay off really well. People would start understanding rules instead of abiding them mindlessly. All the useless and cancerous laws would be amputated. On the same hand, you'll have evolution taking its course again.
@alwaysliam Actually, it's more the ABILITY to acquire knowledge and use it. So, yes, IQ is something that you can have instantly, but you can't really do anything with it without taking the time to learn and develop. Props on the Sheldon Cooper analogy, too.
Technology always gets cheaper, but it has to come into use first. Realistically, the first to use it will probably be the rich. Yes, it's an unfair advantage, but one that we should accept if we want to have any kind of development. Or we could just form an angry mob and take what we want, possibly destroying it in the process. In short, no I don't mind genetic modification for social reasons
I think there's enough of a social divide between rich and poor already and we should strive to not develop it further as much as possible. That said, I don't think we should hinder progress. With any drastic change in history, the first to take the step were always a handful, usually the rich or well-connected. It was that way with vaccines, with computers and any new technology that is now considered common and accessible.
The more I think about the first example the more concerned I get that there's virtually nothing that could be done to prevent rich people from making their whole families have superbrains, and then we would wound up with a few families possibly monopolising the earth's economy. And the second situation is just plain wrong - the subject of this race change should always decide for himself - if there is eveer an option.
WHOOOOO!!! GO GENETICS!!!! GENETICS 2012!! GENETICS WIN THE WORLD CUP!!!!! GENETICS GOT THE GOLD STAR!!!! GENETICS IS THE BOMB AND GENETICS IS GONNA DISARM ITSELF BECAUSE ITS SO AWESOME!!!! I DON'T EVEN KNOW WHY I'M DOING THIS PLEASE STOP ME!!!!
i think the IQ enhancer thing is completely unfair. there is already a gigantic gap in between rich and poor, there is no need to make it bigger. unless someone will use their improved IQ to help the less fortunate, i think it is a very selfish process.
First of all, the whole time I was thinking about Bioshock and splicers. Secondly, if the richs' IQ was raised that much, surely they would be smart enough to find solutions to many problems in our society such as poverty. Maybe that extra intellect would benefit both rich and poor, if only indirectly.
Really good video Dan. I agree it's a no brainer to make genetic modifications to mprove quality of life. In terms of the 2 examples you gave, the 1st would again further divide classes and the 2nd is just completely and utterly wrong. Things like intelligence and IQ can be improved, maybe not significantly, but they can, through parenting, education etc. But someone's race should never ever change, if theyre discriminiated against, then society should change, not the minority.
@ihatepredictivetext Was Micheal Jackson wrong to try and change his race? What if someone is uncomfortable with their race for similar reasons to transsexual people being uncomfortable with their gender? As for intellignece it would only divide classes if it remained expensive. If rich people bought it, the technology would get investment and become cheaper until eventually everybody can afford it. It happened with cars and computers, it could happen with personal GM augmentation.
In response to Dan's first example, I'd reply that the rich being able to buy increased intelligence would really be no different from them already being able to have better jobs, buy better cars, get positions in government, etc etc. These things already give them an advantage. True for anything that can be bought, really, to varying degrees.
I dont think that genetically modifying people is the way to go if peoples intention was to change their appearance or to higher their IQ. People shouldn't give in to societies discrimination by changing their race, it will only make the problem more hard to solve. If your going to change your race because of discrimination then your just giving in to societies wrong doings. Its not going to solve any problems.
Another thing: with genetic modification let's say you could change anything and everything about yourself (taking money out of the equation of course). Don't you think it would be much more difficult for people to just accept themselves the way they are? And would 'imperfect' humans still be accepted in society? Would I not be able to get a job because I never modified myself to not suck at basketball or because I didn't get blue eyes according to the latest fashion trend?
about the IQ increase thing: I was thinking that people with such a high IQ might be able to see and judge their own impact on the world better than ordinary businessmen. It might give them tremendous power yes, but their insight could maybe make them better people, people who use this power for good in ways we never thought of.
...this is starting to sound like a superhero argument, lol...
first of all, if u would have a IQ of 100 more, it doesnt mean ur smart. i dont care if u can solve puzzles faster than I do, i still know more about MRI than you do.
and that puts a cap on ppls wishes
they dont want to spend 1mil to have a higher IQ, cuz they still need to study to get there. wasted money for many. and even if it goes down its still wasted for many.
sorry to correct your anthropological knowledge but we (humans) didn't stop hunting and gathering, there still are hunter and gatherer societies out there. all over the world: papua new guinea, all over africa, india, the amazon...
and our physical evolution has changed quite a lot, our bodies are more immune to certain diseases than the bodies of current hunter gatherer societies. if you introduced a common cold to a todays hunter gatherer, it may be deadly.
@carolinesimans so to say that our bodies didnt adapt to agriculture is just incorrect.
our skin colour has lightened up in the northern countries so we could catch enough sunshine and produce enough vitamin D sice sun burn is not so common up here.
Genetic modification is already happening. we are always evolving.
@carolinesimans i would say that is the adaption to climate. a dark skinned H/G would get sick in northern europe, cuz of lack of vit-D (required for burning fat) and a light skinned would dehydrate cuz of the sun burns.
evolution excists that some mutations work better with different envorinments. natural selection.
there is none atm, because if u lack vit-D u take a pill, or are send south on vacation.
sun cream will prevent u from burning, and water comes from faucets.
in fact, the weak gens get preserved this way. ppl with a genetic issue such as breast cancer (die early without treatment = less offspring) and astma (cant run away from bear or chase pray).
in the wild, these ppl would not have as many children, because they live shorter, have less energy/food than those who do not have these issues.
that is why a pup in the wild is rejected by the mother, cuz putting in energy into a sick pup, is not doing anything for the survival of the race.
it kind of reminds me of the brave new world by aldous huxley. even though the people aren't really that genetically modified, they are still controlled by society in a way that they can't ever have the ability to think for themselves. and that's the scary part about genetics, i think. what if some day someone can just go and control massive parts of the world/a society? i still think genetics is a great field of science but there has to be some kind of ethical control.
two words "BLACK MARKET" if the technology is developed it cant be undeveloped and if we were able to increase someones IQ then there would be no way to stop people from getting this modification
Geneticists develop a cheap way to make people live forever by stopping cell decay or allowing cells to regenerate forever. Is this such a good path to go down?
"Genetic Therapy" already exists in one way or another. For example, abortion is an indirect type of genetic therapy. If your doctor is able to predict or see that your child is going to have down syndrome, they have the ability to tell you and there is also the ability to abort the child. That is an indirect type of genetic therapy because socially it is wrong to abort a child and far worse to abort a child with down syndrome. However, these actions are done everyday, but are not spoken of.
1st hypethetical: china would of have invented it because they are more advanced. They got fucking holograms dude! But I think china would of have already sold it be4 releasing it to the usa. But those are thoughts, not facts.
@gigsters42 Haha, I think that if they were going to sell it, they'd sell it to the U.S. like they do everything else. I wonder what they would want in exchange, and I also wonder how high a price the U.S. would pay for such a thing. It might not necessarily be money either.
This comes close to a story I have developed for a long time now following one man who creates a Retro-tonic capable of giving a human a duo-double-helix of DNA, allowing them to literally 'morph' between Human, animal and half-state forms. The tonic is given to a few dozen people over time and they form a tight-knit community with very natural, free lifestyles. However, many disagree with the tonic and its effects and it quickly becomes a war to maintain their way of life.
If something like #2 could happen and I'm assuming people with modest means could afford it would race even be a thing anymore? If its cheap so many people would want their children to be advantaged. Naturally some would be against it. I just think it would mess up the world. But of course our view is where people are easily defined by their race.
I dont understand what u mean by "poverty causes overpopulation" i understand that poverty and lack of education contribute to overpopulation but overpopulation cause a strain on our resource supplies and in a world where money dominates, would ultimately result in poverty?
@yenn3001 lack of education is one of the causes. lot of other things are cultural. ppl used to have many kids, because (thanks to lack of affordable medical care) child mortality was high. as a elder, not being able to work anymore, your kids would support you.
putting the elderly in old folks home is something rlly odd for ppl in poverty.
a bigger family creates lack of resources, which increases child mortality, which increases demand for more children.
our garbage is filled with what a pour person would still call food scraps.
also to produce a piece of meat (beef) u need a LOT of achers to produce its food. rather build crops for bread or fruit and you produce a lot more food than just that small piece of meat.
ur situation will happen after meat prices go up so badly, that meat becomes unaffordable, and ppl will turn vegatarien for money reasons.
go compare weight and prices in ur local store - ull see
I think that right now we really dont understand the entirety of our anatomy there are still great mysteries about how the brain works, for example. So i think trying to fiddle with someone else's genetic code in a way that could profoundly effect them is extremely unethical. Our lack of knowledge means that we simply dont know what effects our actions could have on people for the rest of their lives
I wish people would just accept the inevitable and stop acting like such pussies. If the person becomes a genius, think of the improvements to products and the such! "They're have an unfair advantage." Yeah? Fuck you! Would you rather have a bunch of idiots making products? Yes, so and such is a shitty product - I wish the developers would get some brains.
*developers do gene therapy*
OMG UNFIAR ADVANTAGE EVEN THOUGH MY IPOD ACTUALLY WORKS NOW. Idiotic reasoning.
With Hypothetical 1 maybe the rich people would smarten up and see that they need to help the poor a bit more? Just a bit of food for thought... I'm not sure if smarts could trump of greed
@FlareStarchild natural evolution isn't the ability to modify yourself, your not conscious of the change until it actually happens. to try and change the rate a speed or the direction of a genetic change would be unstable. the out come of the experiment could be altered by different environments just as natural evolution is. there are too many unknown variables have it come out as you'd like it. plus current humans would do horrible unspeakable things if they came in contact with that power
I believe that no matter the cost, in America it should be legal. eventually, this i can say without a shadow of a doubt, the process would become cheaper and more people would have access to it. This is how many things are/were in America. For instance, college the computer, internet, and if you look back even further, books, and even literacy! The rich have always been (typically) better educated and smarter because they can afford it. Just because it is a temporary advantage
actually, you can only genetiley inhance something if it's still an embryo

1) No, I don't believe it is ethically sound to genetically modify intelligence, intelligence is given to you at birth. 2) Yes, I believe we should do this to catch up to China, BUT with the lower class and only by 30 or 40 points, it would be cheaper and our average intelligence would be above 130 (and the lowest would be usually be at 80-100, so that way we don't have to invest as much into special ed). 3) I believe modification of race should be allowed, but I wish it wasn't needed 4 success

NavySEAL2011 6 months ago
Actually, a lot of the world does not hunt in supermarkets, Dan. I know what you were going for, but there ARE still hunter/gatherer societies out there so humanity has not really "found agriculture and never looked back."
Of the two situations, the second is just plain wrong. Discrimination does not mean you should change yourself to conform, it means the people who discriminate are dicks.
The first one is tougher. But can you keep the rich from doing it if they have the means? Probably not
blessedbyacurse 6 months ago
for the first egsample(lol i fail at spelling) i think that if geneticly improving our iq is created and perfected and harmless, people who have already had it done should be trained to do it to other people therefor making it more common and cheaper. once all the people in one place have had it done, expand the procedure to 3rd world countries speeding up their development and possibly solving world hunger. if you find fault with this plan then comment on it but if you like it then thank you.<3
hailbopthecomet 6 months ago
Make the IQ improving thing a public rather than a private good, like roads and street lamps. Then, using a scholarship/grant method based upon both merit and need, provide it to those who could really use it to improve our society as a whole. This is instead of just allowing the wealthy exclusive access to it, which is very similar to how we treat education, because that's essentially what such a thing would be: instantaneous education. And everyone has the right to educational opportunities.
Throrindor 6 months ago
Hypothetically, lets say genetic engineering can significantly increase the lifespan of humans by conquering certain diseases and by improving quality of life. This could potentially cause overpopulation which would cause competition for land and resources and many other problems. I think this would be an interesting thing for you to consider along with your other opinions and scenarios.

Cavin21 6 months ago

YoussefFishere 6 months ago
@alwaysliam Actually, it's more the ABILITY to acquire knowledge and use it. So, yes, IQ is something that you can have instantly, but you can't really do anything with it without taking the time to learn and develop. Props on the Sheldon Cooper analogy, too.
ThatBookGirl 6 months ago
Technology always gets cheaper, but it has to come into use first. Realistically, the first to use it will probably be the rich. Yes, it's an unfair advantage, but one that we should accept if we want to have any kind of development. Or we could just form an angry mob and take what we want, possibly destroying it in the process. In short, no I don't mind genetic modification for social reasons
ThatBookGirl 6 months ago
I think there's enough of a social divide between rich and poor already and we should strive to not develop it further as much as possible. That said, I don't think we should hinder progress. With any drastic change in history, the first to take the step were always a handful, usually the rich or well-connected. It was that way with vaccines, with computers and any new technology that is now considered common and accessible.
ThatBookGirl 6 months ago
The more I think about the first example the more concerned I get that there's virtually nothing that could be done to prevent rich people from making their whole families have superbrains, and then we would wound up with a few families possibly monopolising the earth's economy. And the second situation is just plain wrong - the subject of this race change should always decide for himself - if there is eveer an option.

cballet315 6 months ago

But someone's race should never ever change, if theyre discriminiated against, then society should change, not the minority.
ihatepredictivetext 6 months ago 23
@ihatepredictivetext Was Micheal Jackson wrong to try and change his race? What if someone is uncomfortable with their race for similar reasons to transsexual people being uncomfortable with their gender? As for intellignece it would only divide classes if it remained expensive. If rich people bought it, the technology would get investment and become cheaper until eventually everybody can afford it. It happened with cars and computers, it could happen with personal GM augmentation.

Would I not be able to get a job because I never modified myself to not suck at basketball or because I didn't get blue eyes according to the latest fashion trend?

sorry to correct your anthropological knowledge but we (humans) didn't stop hunting and gathering, there still are hunter and gatherer societies out there. all over the world: papua new guinea, all over africa, india, the amazon...
and our physical evolution has changed quite a lot, our bodies are more immune to certain diseases than the bodies of current hunter gatherer societies. if you introduced a common cold to a todays hunter gatherer, it may be deadly.
carolinesimans 6 months ago
@carolinesimans so to say that our bodies didnt adapt to agriculture is just incorrect.
our skin colour has lightened up in the northern countries so we could catch enough sunshine and produce enough vitamin D sice sun burn is not so common up here.
Genetic modification is already happening. we are always evolving.
carolinesimans 6 months ago

I dont understand what u mean by "poverty causes overpopulation" i understand that poverty and lack of education contribute to overpopulation but overpopulation cause a strain on our resource supplies and in a world where money dominates, would ultimately result in poverty?
yenn3001 6 months ago
@yenn3001 lack of education is one of the causes. lot of other things are cultural. ppl used to have many kids, because (thanks to lack of affordable medical care) child mortality was high. as a elder, not being able to work anymore, your kids would support you.
putting the elderly in old folks home is something rlly odd for ppl in poverty.
a bigger family creates lack of resources, which increases child mortality, which increases demand for more children.
HexerPsy 6 months ago
lack of resources.... rather bad use.
our garbage is filled with what a pour person would still call food scraps.
also to produce a piece of meat (beef) u need a LOT of achers to produce its food. rather build crops for bread or fruit and you produce a lot more food than just that small piece of meat.
ur situation will happen after meat prices go up so badly, that meat becomes unaffordable, and ppl will turn vegatarien for money reasons.

Regarding Hyp #1.
