I'm looking to get an Apogee Duet and a Macbook Pro for music creation. Are you satisfied with the Duet. As I can hear, it's really good quality. And wath mac did you use to record this? By the way, nice job man!
@willregnier Jesus, I answered this question too late. And I have a black macbook 13inch. Honestly, any mac will do...Just make sure you have 4GB of ram loaded (that's what I have)
The guitars sound very thin, try Native Instruments Guitar rig. That's an easy way to make digital guitars sound pretty full without a real rig. Apogee Duet is one of the cleanest interfaces out there so you can go full on with that thing.
@theorn01 I actually have Guitar rig. I love it! I just didn't use it for this song. It Is, however, being used in my new professionally produced music :)...a friend of mine and I up in the Northeast are starting an intense dance centered project, that incorporates guitar rig into it.
And i'm loving the apogee! It was worth every penny.
@garoad Hey man! I apologize for the late response! My advice is to mess around with your signal paths, basically, try plugging your guitar into an effects board or a signal processor (maximizer...compressor), and THEN go into record. Mess around with the presets some, experiment with the EQ, and just tweak accordingly. But my guitar tone is something i've been developing over a while :) If I get enough viewers/subscribers, I'll start making tutorial videos..
@garoad Personally, I find that when you overdub the guitars as usual, you make sure that both guitar tracks are stereo with the width on max. Then pan one about -80 and then the other to 80. It makes a decent full sound without the need for expensive gear.
@cw5406 I agree with this. I usually end up panning my guitars from anywhere between 45-90 on each end--it depends on the style of music. It's a great technique that i've been using for a while
Hey awesome work, man! How long did this take you? I'm guessing you used redrum for the drum parts and everything outside of the guitars? I'd love to do a few projects with Reason, but need a little inspiration to show me what can be done - this was great!
This song took me...maybe two hours? I write at an extremely rapid pace...In one session, I may be able to track 4-5 songs that are on level or better than this.
and you are correct! I used redrum for the drums (as always...). Even if you find that other programs, like logic, ableton, reaper, or cubase, serve you better overall, Redrum is hands down my absolute favorite drum programming unit.
@chittychad18 Learn guitar, my friend. It has been amazing to me...If you can harness the potential in guitar, and in these new tools...the possibilities are endless. I am progressing every week!
Thanks! The CPU is fine over here. I have 4gb of ram running in my macbook 2.3 ghz. I run everything in pretty high quality (usually 96000)--sometimes higher. Reaction times tend to slow down when I'm running 5+ instances of propellerhead at a time, or when i'm rewiring a huge song(s) with logic pro.
This is good stuff. I literally just got record, and have no idea how to mix or anything yet. Any advice? Check out mine and let me know what you think. Thanks!
@ekimike05 I will definitely have to check out your stuff!
Advice on mixing?
Try mixing with an actual mixer...close your eyes, and actually try to feel what sounds right as far as levels. That, and learn some compression methods, as well as filters, and don't be bashful with the mastering presets :)
I plan on making a video guide on how to hook up the Duet with record.
But the easiest way is:
1. Plug in your interface
2. Go to the preferences in record
3. Go to audio
4. Change the audio driver to "Duet" instead of "built-in-output"/whatever is there.
To make it work in Record (It will not work in Reason as a recording interface), you have to load an audio track/instrument track--Not the software instrument track. I hope that helps! Feel free to comment back!
Hey there! Sorry for the LATE reply--I stay pretty busy with school. The drums are from all over the place lol. Reason 4 has a pretty cool set of samples but I personally don't use them in any of my music. I have my own custom sounds, and samples from all over the place--the best way to get your own sound is to scavenge the internet for them. Over time, you will build up a great collection :).
Nope you it also has a secondary option which let's you authenticate the software over the internet(Assuming you've registered with Propellerheads). You can also run it in demo mode with full functionality including save, but you can't open any files.
Hey there, You do not have to have the key. It's easier to just keep the key in your USB port, but you can also Login to the propellerhead servers--assuming you are a registered user since you even have the key drive. Lately, I have been logging into the servers instead of lugging my key around everywhere.
i use reason with pro tools.. how are the plug ins and compressors with record.. Can you use vocal editing like melodyne? Can you make the volume of the recording like commerical/pro songs.
The compressors and other units, within record, are pretty good. Vocal editing is not as powerful as in other programs like pro tools or logic, but it is pretty good. If you have a good external processing rig, for vocals, record would do the job well. As far as volumes, you can do anything you want to--it all depends on your knowledge of the software. I have all the major software suites (logic, protools, reason, ableton, etc.) and Record is definitely great for on-the-go creation.
ahh i see, so u can't really use other vst plugins and such with record... I think i'm going to stick with pro tools and reason... what i mainly need is reason refills for some drums, and some Wave plugins, it sucks running it on a mac cause to use those wave plugins u need an ilock(free usb port). What interface do u use. I use an Mbox 2 pro, i want to get a Digi 003 in the future
you cant use any 3rd party plug ins with Record. You can use Reason with it and whatever comes with it, which is very good in my opinion. You can download a demo version for free at Propellerhead and check it out. I've been using it for a few weeks and it's pretty cool. Sounds great.
Absolutely! The mixer is modeled after the SSL 9000k and it sounds AMAZING!! You don't have vocal editing like melodyne but you have an awesome comp editor for audio clips and you also have the benefit of real time time stretching coupled with the ability to bounce your tracks anywhere.
I appreciate the words Jon! I ran my guitar through my apogee duet interface and then edited the tones in record. I have recorded a song or two with my half-stack mic'd, with the audio going into my interface and have been meet with pleasant results. Record's processing capabilities are pretty good.
nice track, and your guitar tone is decent. i'm trying to determine whether it's worth getting Record. if the Line6 tone was good it would help. i'm satisfied with my current tone, but it's a complex mix of outboard stuff, including a real amp and enclosed speaker. it would be much simpler and more consistent to use Line6 but i haven't liked the realism or something so far
I am using an Apogee Duet interface--It is incredible. If you are looking for portability and quality, this unit is one of the best things that you can buy.
czaezaar, I'm glad you like it!! I'll be setting up a website soon with information/downloads for some of my other songs. Hopefully I'll find the time to get on top of that, with college and all.
