  • Thank-you!!! Todd's lyrics are so relatable and my spirit connects and has since the early 70's what a gift!!!

  • This Man is Not in the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame! What the hell in Wrong with People. Oh! Yeah It's the Damm Politics of the Music Business. Which...Has Nothing to do with True Talent.Which Todd has a Truckload Of! One of MY Heroes! Can This Man write a Song of What! Ok I'm done venting. God Bless Todd Rungren>A True Wizard> A True Star!!!!!!!!!

  • I've watched this video maybe a hundred times, and I never get tired of it. The lead guitarist is off the charts... The whole band had a synergy on this song... Just firing on all cylinders.

  • What a band!! Vince Welnick, Lyle Workman, Larry Tagg, Mike Urbano

I saw this tour in SantaClara at One Step Beyond

    Unforgettable

  • The Todd is quite the "ORIGINAL" artist.I was a drummer in bands during the 70s and he was admired by ALl the musicians i knew;i had begun writing and recording my own material on prehistoric machines and methods at the time too then found out Todd has been doing the same thing over the last few years(coincidence for me).So REALLY appreciated THAT aspect of what he did back then as well as his vocal-s and arranging ability.Ya.He was "da man" especially from 73-77.And has gotten BETTER since then

  • I'll know I'm a succesful musician when I have three hot chick backup singers.

  • guy's obviously a genius, but I sort of wish he'd stuck to jeans and t-shirts....

  • I saw this tour, however I think there was a mini-tour the year before right after Nearly Human was released and saw most of the Nearly Human album performed in a small club called The Strand in Redondo Beach/Torrance, CA. It was great! That's Lyle Workman on lead guitar.

  • gtrdave: I was in Wilm too and hung out in back of the Grand like a 61-year old groupie. What a thrill to be 6 feet away when he stepped out of the bus!

  • Awesome. I saw this tour when he came to the Wiltern Theater in Los Angeles in '90. It was a great show. Just saw him live again last night at The Grand in Wilmington, DE and @ 63 years old he (and his band) are still amazing.

  • I remember seeing this show at the Riv in Chicago. Amazing.

  • Saw this tour. The Red Head in back kept smiling at me.........I think :)

  • Been a Todd fan since I saw him at the Akron Civic Theatre in 77, Utopia "RA" tour. He blew me away that night and many other times since. This man is a true artist in every sense of the word. His voice can send chills down your spine at times, as can his guitar. It is hard to understand how people can't see how talented this man truely is.

I've seen him 50 times and plan on seeing him again in July this year. See him live and you will understand why they said TODD IS GOD back in the 70's!!

  • This is the pinacle of the genre named "blue-eyed soul"

  • As it we didn't Know!

  • @ReturnToSound : amen to that ReturnToSound! I am just FLOORED!

  • After all these years, I am just in awe of this man! He is the consumate artist...absolutely awesome!

  • I saw the Nearly Human tour in Cleveland, just like the 5 other times I've seen Todd, since the Utopia days.

Kind of strange that I've always had to go north in Ohio to see Todd.

Oh yeah, the R&R Hall Of Fame is there.

Maybe that's as close as Todd will ever get, but I don't think he gives a damn either way.

    Peace.

    Rock

  • I saw Todd twice during the Nearly Human tour. Celebrity theater in Anaheim CA and The Coach House down by the San Juan Capistrano mission.

    Both shows were awesome!!!

  • @rad802 Amazing tour!!!!! Classic artist with a top-notch band behind him.....I`m more of a hard edge rock guy...but this was definitely without any question the best concert I`ve ever seen!!!!!(75 at least!!!!)...Still see Todd each time he comes to town!!!!!

  • thanks todd for another incredible song from nearly human. i cherish this cd. it just keeps getting better with each listen, a lost masterpiece.

  • I have this DVD in my collection, and never get tired of watching......Then nor now..

Todd is too awesome for words.......He's my musical hero!!! Go Todd!...

  • nearly one of the best albums Todd did, his diversity is amazing

  • First, AWATS. Now, Todd and Healing, from front-to-back. Man, how I would LOVE to see him do a Nearly Human concert like that! Combine Nearly Human and Something/Anything -- What a show THAT would be! But this song remains one of my all-time Todd songs. And my "musical maturation" has allowed me to appreciate Nearly Human more and more, with every week/month/listen.

  • I'm training for my first full marathon (Chicago 10/10/10) and Todd just keeps pushing me forward. I can't stop rinning!

  • My fav singer/songwriter/musician/arranger/producer of all time. Induct this man in to The Rock Hall of Fame I say!!!

  • CANT STOP WATCHING !!!....

  • running standing still..

  • I LOVE TODD, more than I despise those who minimalized him. He stood up to the powers that be and it cost him, but he kept his moral compass. When asked who my favorite musician is, there is only one answer. I LOVE TODD

  • @huskerbird1 This too is my reply.

  • I saw this tour at the celebrity theater in Anaheim and at the Coach House.

    Todd was awesome.

  • blessed are the music makers

  • this is a GREAT todd song...luv the lyrics luv his singing, music and performance...thanx

  • Todd is GOD!

  • I love this song

  • The thinking man's artist...

  • @catgirl6717 couldn't agree more...and still doing it (No World Order; The Individualist;Liars; Arena)

  • Love this video...thanks for posting!

  • when he is good he is very good..but boy does some of it stink

  • nope

  • @69nzzfine You suck ....Tod has never Stunk.

  • Oh Todd, oh Todd. He plays it off with cynicism, sarcasm, some kind of defensive mechanism, and then he bares his soul, naked, risking everything. He can piss me off, but he'll always be my number one hero.

  • The fact that Todd can piss you off just proves he's not a godd after all.

Todd knows his mission in life is to set an example by being his own unique self, and this he has done superbly well. Way more than nearly, Todd is entirely, divinely human. He's a hero to me too.

  • Todd is God!!

  • "gotta gotta gotta GET DOWN= GGGGD

     (LITA)= Love is the Answer!

  • Todd is such a MASTER & GENIUS.Overlooked Ignored, and Misunderstood.

Todd Rundgren needs our support RIGHT NOW More Than Ever! Not finacially secure after all he has accomplished in the Music World and Computer World. Please support shows buy merchandise & spread the word.

Also please click periodically on his myspace music page. Help HIM RISE 2 this OCCASION !!

    ROCK LOVE,

    CHERRY XOXO

I am on Twitter too supporting TODD using same Username Just Loving Fan

  • get alife. nobody cares about todd as much as you

  • RUN FOREST RUN !!!!!

  • i grew up listening to todd rundgren. as an 18 year old now i'm SO happy i didn't judge music after the crap we hear now.

THIS is good music. love you todd. :)

  • Yep! Todd IS A GOD !!!

  • TRUE DWAN: Its the Mantra of my Life. Pure Genious TODD> LOVE HIM!!!!

  • Only Todd can make the line 'I have a vision of myself at the finish line string' work so well!

    I can't stop listening....

  • You know He Can't Stop Running. He was 18 in Woody's Truck Stop, and at 61* he's touring in his Arena!!!

  • The old school is the best music ever. Anything 2000 and prior is on the God List. It's now official folks! LOL Anything that was created music wise from 2000 on earlier no matter what type of music they're considered Gods now. I'm making it official. LOL Music back then was untouched, nothing today can compare to any music of any kind back then.

  • I have seen Todd live at least 5 times. He exudes energy to the audience. Todd is God!

  • Awesooooome! I must have been six when I watched this tour on vhs with my dad and brother, and I can still remember the feelings associated. Even at six years old Todd was able to communicate profound understandings to me through his art. I'm 22 now. Have collected almost every Todd/ Utopia album. My kids will have been born to synthesize as well.

  • @abrunomack right on brother......and yes, this is your brother.

  • He is the greatest creator of our time. He is a knowledgeable musician with the honesty to create beautiful music without fear of reprisal. He can rock and sing. A self-taught musician and singer. He could barely sing when he was in Woody's Truck Stop. He was the original abuser of the Major 7th chord. He is the greatest vocalist to ever live. Sometimes his songs are so esthetic, they are sad or melancholy. I can't wait to witness the blessed AWATS tour. I WILL be front row with a tall beer.

  • Time marches on...

I start to trip I start to fall,,

    Now I'm running from something..

  • thanks for the411 . reminds me of when zappa would let steve via take over on certain songs.....

  • who is this guitarist ? if todd hired him he must be way talented. todd's even better on the mic. than he is on any other instr.

  • I think it's Lyle Workman. He's awesome

  • It's Lyle. The year before Todd produced YoYo for Bourgeois Tagg, Lyle's band.

  • RIP Vince Welnick

  • i've been watching this every morning right when i wake up for about 5 days now...i cant stop watching!

  • I can recall todd rundgren a long time ago.although late in his career still a good song

  • this song is very uplifting

  • This cut get's you ready for the day ahead!

  • It's a pity Todd doesn't get more recognition in 'mainstream music' if you get my meaning. Very talented guy, brilliant musician

  • Todd has made some unreal music. "Dream goes on forever" is one of the few 45rpm's I have purchased. The guy has a lot of soul in his vocals.

  • Where would pop/techno music be without TODD? He's still got it. Saw him 3 years ago in DC with Joe Jackson!

  • timeless

    genius

into the arms of my god within, without

    beyond time and endless space

    thank you

  • Has anyone come across the posting of Todd singing I saw the light? I cant seem to find one anywhere..........Thanks

  • I was only looking for a video of Todd singing Hello .....its me! Such a great song brought back so many memories, and then I found myself searching out all his other videos and came across this one. Its amzaing how pefect this live performance is and how much fun the whole band is having. I am truly a HUGE Todd fan now. Thanks for posting this, Todd just does'nt get the regcognitionhe deserves does he. He truly gifted musician.

  • I seen Todd in concert twice in the 70's...I just dug up these videos recently...I'm hooked on watching them right now....This stuff is great!

  • I fookin luv im

  • Todd is genious and his band is amazing. His wife Michelle and the back up singers add so much to masterpiece.

    I am in awe!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • My First album that I could buy with my limited allowence was"TODD".. it changed my life...and apparently my brother's as well, as he stole it!

But during the time i had it, I realized that music COULD be different from the crap usually played on the radio stations.

Then I heard Frank Zappa, and music was now a thing that COULD be imagined and made from our own minds!

I owe it to Todd First. then Frank,, now me!

  • You're the best, Todd.

  • HERO.

  • forget about romantic love! Todd shows us the way to the highest love! whenever i get down i should remember to come listen to this song.

  • Todd has brought SO MUCH Joy and Happiness into my life over the last 30 years with is music.... Words can't express how much spritual energy I have been blessed with as a result of his life. Me loves me some Todd!

  • I love this song so much.

  • It's a shame that the Nearly Human CD is out of print - The only sealed copies can only be purchased from Internet soakers asking for upwards of $75! Supply and demand, I guess. Anyone know if this video is from the "Live in Japan" 1991 DVD?

  • Yes, it is!

  • This is the best Todd has done (so far). Went to this show in Mpls and cried for joy many times that night. I was obsessed with this and the following record 2nd Wind. Wish he would do another "big band" record and tour again. Blue eyed soul at it's best. Go Larry Tagg!

  • It is criminal that Nearly Human was so ignored upon release. NH is a Rundgen masterpiece and that's saying something. Musically intricate, lyrically deep and searching it just doesn't get any better.

I missed this tour and I'm so grateful to have a memento such as this on youtube. Moving music at the hand of a master musician, producer. Treasure this fans, it just doesn't get any better.

  • I listen to this everynight. Brings me peace.

    He is amazing...absolutely amazing...

  • I'm getting older and sometimes I despair...because I don't see enough beauty, dignity and intelligence in my music and culture...Todd flat recharges my batteries!

  • Amazing Guitar by Lyle Workman!

  • Thanks lorinswelk. I keep running against the odds, listen to great music like Todd's and never give up. I absolutely love his work.

  • Todd is the best. I listen to this everynight. Helps me with my terminal illness. Makes me think of happier times.. truly he is amazing.

  • Keep up that running, jessebel, and own it.

Todd's stuff is often my inspiration too.

  • Basically this is the Bourgeois/Tagg group that T Rundgren produced in their second album, Yoyo. Except for Brent Bourgeois, this became the backup band on the tour.

  • Now that's some tight shit!!!! Go Todd go!!!!

  • Todd is actually better live than his professtional made music........he is awesome performer!!! LOVE HIM!!

  • really great tune and i still love todd, but i like it when he plays guitar....the first tour i saw todd was in 74- must have seen him 15 times....

  • gino v is/was ok, but this is the shit. todd rules and he was at his best w/ the nearly human tour. i was lucky enough to see the show in dallas, tx still ranks in top 5 ever. the band was razor sharp. beautiful, near perfection, heaven

  • reminds me of Gino Vennelli, whom I'm also a fan of.

  • WOW!!

This sounds so good it's hard to believe that it's " live " !!

I saw him in Seattle on that tour and I don't remember it sounding this good!! lol

  • I hadn't heard that Vince had passed until your post, hanky. I used to do tech work for him when touring for the Tubes.

A brilliant pianist and a great guy to work with. I'm so sorry and send condolences to his wife.

  • RIP Vince , miss you my brother

  • I feel beter since my last comment; it made it to 5 stars. And yes, Lyle Workman is fucking amazing, as is the whole band. Ah, those lovely backup ladies.

  • the gap band.

  • Love to see you do better, Lifesucksdie.

  • check out the last two minutes of "yearning for your love" by The Gap Band. and i love todd rungren by the bye.

  • No problem, Lifesucksdie.

    Such a lovely nic.

I checked out the clip you recommended. It would be impressive if maybe a few members of the band actually bothered to learn how play musical instruments.

Call me a purist, but I see precisely zero comparison here.

    Please enlighten me.

  • I couldn't even think of where i would be without Todd in my life my Utopian love and Music is passed to my kids thanks Todd and thank you for this great jam. i was at the show in Cincinnati at the emery for this tour and it was the best sounding concert i can recall.

  • Guess I'll have to go home and pull out that good 'ol "Live in Japan" VCR tape. Todd's music has helped me get through so much in my life...from teenager to 42 year old fart...it's amazing. I remember getting my "Live in Japan" VCR tape in 1991 as an Army soldier in Germany...I immediately plopped it into the VCR in the control tower AT A LIVE TANK RANGE!! TPOH, Todd, and many others got me through my 3 years there, away from family and friends...my divorce in '92..whew! Thank God for Todd!!!

  • You might wanna try and seek out the DVD. I think it was released around the same time as "The Desktop Collection" came out. I've watched it on Netflix a few times.

It's just a shame that as good as Todd can be, he's just as likely to make something like "With a Twist," which was so irredeemably bad, as he is to make a masterwork like "Nearly Human."

  • Holy SH!+ Lyle! I mean HOLY SH!+! I could so kick self for not seeing you on this tour.

    See you soon.

  • lets hear it for lyle workman on lead guitar playing his socks off

  • Just a question. Who rates these things? This amazing shit gets 4 stars instead of 6 out of 5? He not only retains his voice and energy, but orchestrates that many people into perfection? Folks, we're all fucked in one way or another, but the next time you feel sorry for yourself, listen to Todd, and if you're short on time one song will do it. You pick it. Even the sad ones will make you feel better.

  • great video

  • nice move on TR's part ... back to philly and latin sound .... something darrel hall would do

  • Jenny Muldaur, and Mchelle Grey are certainly not hard to look at either HOO WEE !

  • I can't stop seeing Todd!!

  • It was a amasing SHOW! at the time..Such a surprise..I saw it in Toronto with the pursuit of happiness as an opening act...so Classy and human

  • i saw this show in seattle....fricking awesome

  • This was an OVERWHELMING show. Every minute was superb. Couldn't take my eyes off of Shandi. Sexiest back-up singer I've ever seen on stage.

  • I'm going this Sunday to the Danforth In T.O.. 8th time to see him. El Mocambo on Spadina. Anybody see that show? Can't wait based on the early reviews! Never forgets his Cdn. fan base!!

  • That guitar player is good but I miss Todd doing his thing.

  • It's Lyle Workman. Guitarist for Bourguoise Tagg and for TR's "Nearly Human" & "2nd Wind" albums. He's a monster. TR, however, could kick his ass back in the day...

  • hahaha. i LOVE todd... my first concert was a tr concert when i was 4. huge part of my life.

    thanks man!!

  • I can't stop listening

  • damn, i'm crying

  • a great song to start every day!!!! todd is a beautiful soul, he's been part of my life ever since high school and the nazz!!!!

  • rdog7777,

Yeah, back in the day, when I could still run the paths, through the countryside, this was the first song I heard.

    Those were some great days.

(Hey-something about those 7's, huh? There is for me.)

    Take care.

  • I have always so loved this wonderful song!...what a treat to see it live. THANK YOU for posting it! Todd...what can we say?..but 'awesome'!

  • can we please hear this song in the olympics?!

  • The guitarist chewed it up!

  • More inspiration from The Master, still better than ALL the others;a TRUE STAR!

  • Magic,magic,magic-the true master,rock on Todd.

  • Todd is Godd!

  • So many Talents, so much Harmony and Devotion. Years make this just better and better...

  • Strenghtful band,a river in flood, this is the music that make me believe in its,,,no more words

  • The Guitarist is Lyly Workman from the band Bourgeois Tagg that Todd produced. Lyle now plays for Sting and scores movie soundtracks. He did 40 Year Old Virgin. Lyle is a BIG TALENTED KID!!!

  • Michele, you rock in all these videos!!

  • Anyone know the name of the wonderful guitarist? He seems to me a cross between Todd and Larry Carlton. He is so smooth and melodic and yet cutting. Watching this again, it seems to me what would have been amazing would have been for Todd to have picked up his guitar traded 4s with this guy at the end.

  • That is the most beautiful song I have ever heard.

  • thanks! i just bought this on itunes

his voice is unreal on this tour

  • Todd belongs in the Hall! Dudes brilliant

  • absolutely beautiful! loved it so much - smiled all the way through. pure joy. thanks

  • I saw a few shows on this tour. I always think that Todd is so much better with a band and this was one of his best ... Larry Tagg on Bass, Lyle Workman on Guitar, the hot chicks (including his woman) on backing vocals. It was a great tour and one that could have put TR back on the Top 40 map with any kind of backing from a record company.

  • I saw this tour at the Catalyst in Santa Cruz, CA. Great show.

  • Great song, well performed by everyone. Would you believe it was the first guitar riff that had me crying on this one, that ending had me bawling my eyes out it was so beautiful.

  • I sthis from "LIve in Japan"?

  • Live in New York I believe? This was a few days or less after they did the Letterman show with the same band. I have it on tape, just don't know how to put it on this format and then, they will take it down.

  • it's from live in japan.

  • Sweet. He gets around! Someone teach me how to turn tapes into digital! I have the Letterman vid and many ones I do not see here.

  • This is Live in Japan. I have a crappy DVD copy of this concert. Great show.

  • I saw this show, "Live in Cleveland."

If they took the show to Japan it's news to me.

  • What about the song The Afterlife by Todd? Know where THAT one is?

  • Jack,

I'm not sure about "The Afterlife," but I'll check with my brother, Rob, who knows any, and all things Todd. Either he or I will get back to you. If you haven't, you might try Todd's website.

(Why isn't todd in the R&R Hall of Fame? Anyone?

  • Great! And why ain't Alice Cooper either?

  • Jack,

    Did you find, "The Afterlife?"

  • I agree with about Alice.

Killer was a great album, as were many albums.

  • I think he's not in the Hall because, the people who decide who goes in think he is to high on himself. That and he has never done what the record companies wanted him to do.

  • ikon486,

I think of Todd as a "Loner," his own boss from circa '69, and answers to no one.

He has continued to maintain legions of loyal fans by selling out concert, and playing new music.

I have seen Todd over a half dozen times, and, based on the reaction, each time, by his fans, he leaves it all on the stage.

Every moment, is for the fan, in my opinion.

Have you read somewhere that he,"Is to high on himself," and can/will you you share your source ?

  • When I said "high on himself" I meant that they think he is conceited. I don't think so, even if has reason to be. Your right about him answering to no one, and that all ties together.

I've seen Todd somewhere around 20 times since

the RA tour. Will be going to see him in Cleveland on the 16th of Jan. He always puts his heart and soul into his performances as you said.

  • Ikon486,

    I feel total stupidity.

I sincerely apologize, and should have thought, that anyone who has a comment about Todd, would never say anything like what I thought you did.

Are you seeing him at The Agora Ballroom?

That's where I saw him, and one of the best ensembles ever, during "The Nearly Human," tour.

    One last thing.

My ex-wife and I were married on 1/16/82.

25 years, two beautiful kids, and she agreed, we could, "Still be friends."

    Take care.

  • Hey no problem, no need to apologize! Happy anniversary! It was 25 years for my wife and I July. Also 2 Kids..

He is playing at the Allan Theatre at Playhouse Square. Never been there, but it looks like a nice venue.

I saw the Nearly Human show at the Arcadia in Dallas, or was that Acapella? Oh well one or the other.

Take care, always good to chat with a Todd fan.

  • ikon,

The other time I saw Todd in Cleveland, was in a large gym,for standing, also with seats, in a square balcony, the lighting was low, even before the show.He was solo with a circular "Music Machine,"in the middle, to assist him.

He had 2 places he could enter from.

Then, a hand on my shoulder, and that voice: How ya doin'? I saw a smile, he walked through the crowd, from behind, the element of surprise,(the dim lights).

The name of the tour??Sound familiar?LOL

    Have"Fun," my friend!

  • Yeah, That was No World Order tour. Saw that at a club in Deep Elum (sp) Dallas. No seats standing room only. We were right up front and my wife got up on the gismo he was using, "music machine" as you called. I forget what he called it now.

  • Yeah, a flash of memory just hit.

It was/is "The Todd Pod," which tecnically, with all the instrumentation involved, as you heard and observed, help the concert effort enormously.

    Later.

  • Its Afterlife from the Liars Album 2004

Check out the Tr connection you can get lyrics there and if you belong to patronet it should be there for download

  • This video was recorded at the Sun Plaza in Nakano, Tokyo, Japan. I know this because I live in Tokyo and I saw Utopia play there in the 90's. The video I have (called Nearly Human, not Live in Japan) begins with an evening shot of the Sun Plaza and the Japanese audience entering the hall.

  • Wow, thanks for posting this gem, from one of Todd's best albums, Nearly Human. I only wish he could take a band this size on the road with him again..what a treat!
