  • the images are removed because they do not have the proper copyright on image to show it to us. Therefore they did not have copyright to show it in lecture. Looks like MIT needs pipa and sopa to fail as well. Everyone breaks copyright laws, not just students downloading music. :)

  • great video thanks

  • it's sad to be blind due to copyright corcerns ... and somehow I feel that teaching science does not match up with copyright concerns ...

  • Comment removed due to copyright restrictions.

  • 43:00. Why is the class empty? o.0

  • Fuck c0pyright.

  • Fuck c0pyright.

  • free education online for Pre med students attending community college! yeah yeah

  • @GollaGandaLova omg u a premed too?

  • @nexypointy I will be a premed as well! My main interest in the medical field is Pathology. I am watching these lectures in preparation to taking Bio. What is your field of interest in medicine?

  • @yuriynyr either neurology or cardiology, or to be perfectly honest, i haven't figured it out yet. :P

  • Funny, starting from: 16:01 he mentioned "ten to twenty millions...", but wrote "10-50 x 10^6 estimated". What is that?!

  • @MilanKarakas

    10 to the power 6

  • @robin22391 No, I want to point out the number, not the powers.

He said "ten to twenty.(10-20)..." but on blackboard appeared ten to fifty (10-50)..."

  • Love his Lectures.........My main aim in life is to complete my higher studies from MIT.........I am doin my 1st year B.Tech Biotech from VIT,Vellore

  • keep watching you might learn something

  • Fucking copyright concerns. "oh no, we could get sued for just about anything nowadays"

  • @Anthony1136 if you've been to university, you would know that all lecture notes are saved for students only.

  • I'm supposed to donate to MIT OCW so I can read "Removed due to copyright concerns" for 20 or so minutes out of 45? Uhh... thanks, but I'll go buy the book, which contains a hell of a lot more information.

  • i went to one of his lecture although i didn't knew him before it was great!

  • He's a great teacher. I used to sneak across the square from my campus after calc. to sit in on his lectures. lol

  • copyright concerns @#&*$.....

  • Dinosaur ---> Barney

    Beaver ---> MIT student

    I like this guy XD

  • **** this copyright concerns!

  • "removed due to copyright concerns"

  • you noticed that there is no audience..?wtf?

  • I reaaaally wish they could show it all instead of this stupid copyright stuff. Also, I have a huuuge crush on this professor :)

  • I still like to know why the video goes blank because of copy rights. The entire video should be visible

  • lol @ dino

  • 11:08am Monday

    8:11

    11:08

10:47 I want this to be 1 of my favorite parts

  • I absolutely love this teacher. I wish I would go there and just learn from him and work in his lab. That's the only thing I don't like about living in Latin America; but well, I'm very very glad to have these videos, and hopefully you'll be uploading more so we can keep learning! I saw that video of when he invited Vernon Ingram to the classroom, that was amazing. These lectures are so good. Good job, Prof. Walker! I admire you.

  • @silandthemagpie I've regularly donated to the MIT open course ware. People from all over the world are learning such a lot from these videos

  • @vk92007 thank you for doing that. Seriously. I have almost no access to good (or just up to date) books, and all I can do is study from the Internet. And the fact that there's correct and updated academic material coming straight from a good University is very very helpful and makes me even more interested in Biology

  • @silandthemagpie Also try the berkeley lectures on every available subject(s) in science. My personal favourite was 'The Mechanical Universe' on the Annenberg CPB project, but that is only available on that web site. One can also establish an account on the web site and watch their science series. I mention that because I am a Bio-Physicist and that's what got me started. I believe that audio-visual is a powerful technique for teaching and I try to incorporate that in my teaching.

  • @vk92007 And we're all moochin' off your donations xP

But I'll probably donate too, although I have only watched one lecture -- I'm a donatey type of guy, especially when it comes to science -- humanity's only hope.

  • how can you copyright an eye

  • I think it's a great course, I was able to understand pretty much everything he said and considering that I am not a native english speaker that's some extra points and he made the subject very interesting. Liked it a lot !!!

  • Subtitle errors @ 28:12 and onward, "Prokaryotic cells are on the order of 1 kilometer [...] eukaryotic cells 10-100 kilometers."

  • He sounds high. First he said 3 million bp then 3 billion

  • wow , no students , this guy must be dead boring.

  • this is fucking unbelievable, I thought DMCA allowed showing copyrighted material for educational purposes! But for fuck's sake, those well known molecules are not even copyrighted!

  • @pinochet222 if you spent five years writing a brilliant textbook, would it be fair if you had to give it away for free because you can't copyright the knowledge inside?

of course not. i can't stand these stupid arguments for breaking the law.

  • @gorgolyt What are you talking about, fucking moron? Do you even know what DMCA stands for?

And no, lifetime of the author + 70 years is not a fair copyright term for books, you fucking dumb shit.

  • @pinochet222 wow, you're sounding so intellectual right now.

what on earth does the 70 year rule have to do with this? with anything i said? did i say 'would it be fair to give it away for free in 70 years'? no, i was talking about immediately. were these lectures released 70 years ago? 5 years ago?

if you're going to respond please stop the equivocation stuff and have the guts to take on what i was actually talking about.

  • @gorgolyt you were clearly talking about books, "a brilliant textbook", fucking idiot. At least read your own comment, for fuck's sake.

This stuff seems to be just too complicated for your little brain so you can as well fuck off and die.

  • @pinochet222 what on earth is wrong with you? what makes you think it's right to talk to strangers like this?

i think you'll find you're the one who's confused. here's a clue: the book is an analogy.

believe it or not i can tell that this video is not a video of a book.

  • @gorgolyt you are a fucking moron, so what is your problem with my comments?

quit being a fucking moron and read the DMCA act of 1998 to understand what's the real issue here

  • @pinochet222 please get back to me when you feel like speaking like an adult. ;)

  • @gorgolyt moron, that what you are

  • you'll never see a bio lecture this empty at stony brook, even if its 8am monday morning.

  • and.............................?

  • where r the audiences?

  • does he know that no one showed up that day?

  • There is so much new material in this intro lecture as compared to the one I took nearly 40 years ago. Completely new ideas and fields of biology. I wonder what an intro to bio course will teach 40 years from now.

  • @aaronso2 they've now split into studying the genome, the transcriptome and the proteome and how they act together as the interactome and doing so collaboratively with different disciplines like chemistry & IT together as systems biology. pretty f***ing sweet

  • what the hell is coryright concern

  • THANKS FOR THE VIDEOS!!!!! Very permeative and interesting. Whoever doesn't like it, go pay for a full course or screw yourself.

  • @bomberfun1

    absolutely right!

  • Comment removed

  • watch them all. Everything you need to know on relevant levels. These guys are cutting new pathways in science. And we get to listen in for a grand total of zero dollars. if you are truely a student of the universe, pay attention.

  • what a strange, nervous little man

  • @kayzur19 Lol

  • where is the students

  • wtf with that Lecture?

the lack of diagrams and pictures is sort of wrong

  • If he already got the Nobel prize, why do they remove it for cr issues?

  • This guy loves talking to himself.....

  • if MIT is posting it why would it be copyright

  • THey are in that chamber tha was shown in the Matrix hooked up to some bilogical machine

  • where is everybody?

  • is it just me or does this guy sound like dana carvy?

  • He certainly does, but it could just be us :)

  • That's probably the Canadian accent.

  • "Removed due to copyright concerns" ?!?!? Why did you put it on youtube then?

It is strange that the room is empty, it looks like a good course anyway.

  • Hilarious that there's no one there but he pretends there is. Had me fooled till the cameraman panned the empty seats.

  • Seriously, wtf is up with that?

  • They must be sitting in the back

  • Why didn't I think of going to MIT on youtube before? Hahaha this is great.

  • yeah fuck going to school its all right here and text books can be purchased from the book store!! :P people are very vein going to a school just for a peice of paper that they can wipe their asses with, when they can learn for free on youtube

  • Alright Will Hunting, let's see you learn as much from youtube as you would by formally enrolling in a university.

  • I was failing science and theni heard about these lectures on youtube and then i watched them and lets just say these helped alot i must say thank you for putting these on here it was great watching these and i want to become a massage therapist when i grow up so i need these to pass.lol but even with the blackout it doesnt matter as long as you learn and pass your classes.thats all that counts.

  • I'm a big fan of online MIT lectures but this is ridiculous....half the lecture is blacked out due to copyright issue...complete waste of time!!!!

  • What time does the blackout start?

  • Well seeing anything online is a friggen blessing. What do you expect, it's a private organisation and the tuition is high and skyrocketting!

  • yeah, my school is now 20K a year not counting books, and other student fees like labs and media center.

  • I love copyrights!!

  • HAHAHA MIT should possibly create some students in the class room.

  • He reminds me of Woody Allen when his voice trails away.

He has changed my idea of biology teachers.

  • haha, i know -- i was thinking the exact same thing. especially when he talks about cancer and blindness, haha. also, when he clears his throat @ 13:40

  • Comment removed

  • It's completely ridiculous that over half of the video's actual video data is missing "due to copyright concerns". At this rate, why bother uploading the video at all?

  • That's very cool.

    Thank you for sharing.

  • Very good lectures

  • Very informative.

  • The captions don't seem to match the video clip topic though. Or maybe it's my laptop?

  • This gentleman is very good to listen to, just informal enough. He's clearly interested in his subject and keen to infect his audience with that passion. In one of his later ones his lecture was peppered with anecdotes to sweeten up the academic content. Well done him!

  • It was idiotic to blank out long sections of the video, in the fear of violating copyright laws: there's no excuse for MIT to not know about Fair Use and the exemption instructors have when it comes to educational material. MIT has an excellent Copyright Law lecture series.

  • He lives in a palace of a home in the finest part of Rockport Massachusetts. I know him socially but had no idea. Empty lecture halls don't pay. He needs an agent!

  • I wonder who in that lecture hall would rather be somewhere else...since there's nobody there.

  • There is another way how to find probelms in human body. Electromagnetic energy. Freid Idea. You can wipe out of your body any desiease. Just by giving orders to life forms of our body. Isnt that new stage opf Evolution.. hehe

  • yeaa. You can communicate with the bacterias in your body. They are pretty smart.

  • Oh come on! He is delivering his lecture to you, youtube viewers. I don't have time to check whole the lecture to judge its quality. Nonetheless this is a excellent way of reuse information, save time to avoiding doing the same/almost the same lecture over years. Reasonable enough huh?

  • He would make a perfect congressman, I like how he acts like he's talking to an audience like when congressmen filibusters.

  • we're here?

  • i don't want to sound like a fingerpointer, but there is one person filming the stuff;)

they're probably all sitting in the back of the room...

  • at :30 its funny how the guy is talking so passionately but no audience is visible

  • @mundaaa What is even more amazing - that he sounds so amazingly nervous, like there is a full audience sitting there listening. lol

    Its really endearing. lol

  • @mundaaa i think it's sad..

  • @mundaaa lol ya. Its like that because at the beginning they always warn students if they dont want to be on camera to sit in the back.

  • thanks for this
