Remember the writer HP Lovecraft? It never hit me who until just now, but HP Lovecraft (at least in a certain picture) has always reminded me of someone and I couldn't place who.
It just hit me....Gomer. That's who it is for me. Of course I'm not saying you couldn't tell them apart, but something about HP Lovecraft's face reminds me of Gomer. Just looked around online a few seconds ago...I'm glad to see I'm not the only one who has thought so.
18 to 35 to serve a turn at military duty? Good thing I'm 44. I missed it. (looks up at the sky ) "puts hands together in prayer, closes eyes" mumbles in low tone.... Thank you.
@dleeoxford I seem to recall one episode where there was a crowd gathered and you could see someone who is. But that was years ago and I couldn't possibly tell you what the episode was. Sorry.
Yeah it is the one where Ernest T. Bass wants to join the military for a uniform and there are a couple waiting in line on the street in front of the recruiting office
At 6:42, Carter refers to himself as "Gunnery Sergeant Carter", his proper title. He then tells everyone to call him "Sergeant Carter", improper (or perhaps that was proper in the 60s). A proper short version would be "Gunny" or "Gunny Carter". Again, just a TV show, but as a former Marine myself, these little things bug me.
At 4:50, Andy tells Gomer he has to go "right by the base" on his way to Wilmington, NC. If he's referring to Camp Lejeune, NC, that's not where boot camp is. Marine Corps Recruit Depot (MCRD) is either in San Diego (where much of this stock USMC footage was shot) or Parris Island, SC, next to Charleston. Recruits East of the Mississippi river go to Parris Island, west of Mississippi to San Diego, CA. And Camp Wilson, at 5:50 is at 29 Palms, CA. I know it's just a TV show, but...
the original version of the Marines' Hymn didn't have "in the air", because it was written long before Marine Aviation was a major part of their operations.
See "No Time For Sergents" where Andy Griffith is the Gomer Plyle type character. It has his friend Don Knotts in it, and is likely where the Gomer Plye idea comes from.
LMAO. I watched this when I was a kid and felt so bad that nobody had any confidence in him. Didn't quite understand the real world yet. I asked my dad, Army Paratrooper, how unfair it was and all, I laugh now, but he snorted and told me the REAL Marines would kill Gomer. LOL Many years later, as I was with 1/7, I wanted to watch this episode again. Thanks for posting it.
