In the scene directly preceding this one, Aladdin fought the films primary villain Saluk. During the fight, Saluk slashed Aladdin across the shoulder with his Wolverine like claws. Disney released a sneak peek of this film a few months before it came out and featured this song in it. It played out exactly as it looks here except for one small detail In the preview, Aladdin's shoulder and arm was cover in blood. Yes, RED blood. Didn't pass standards apparently.

He joined after (apparently) killing another member named Sa'luk in a joining ritual known as the challenge where in order to join you have to face off with one of them in one on one combat. If the attempting recruit succeeds, than he joins. And thus the number always stays at 40.

Not quite. To get into the Forty Thieves, you have to defeat (aka kill) one of the current members. The person Aladdin had to battle fell off a cliff into sharp rocks and was thought dead, so he was accepted into the group. (Turns out the other guy wasn't dead though. Whoops.)
