@beiu520 maybe.. but without his size and protection, the females are screwed.. yet his bulkiness makes him a less efficient hunter so he leaves that to the females... if the male doesn't act aggressively, he won't get fed.. if he doesn't get fed, ultimately, the lioness' wouldn't get protected.
@metalmonkey88 I think he takes the food just because he'd bigger so he can. Him protecting the pride isn't a solo mission, its the females with the vested interests and they always get stuck into the fighting themselves, they don't exactly sit back and watch him do it.
@ThreeSpotCat Let's hope he can or he won't get fed. Hyenas are WAY less likely to try to scavenge from a male lion than the females.. obviously, they are able to defend the pride, but the primary defense (from the documentaries I've seen - not like I'm a biologist or anything) is the male lion. The main point of my comment was to justify the role of the male lion - It's overall extremely beneficial to the lionesses or he wouldn't be around. I guarantee you they would fall apart with a male.
@metalmonkey88 Fall apart without a male? No not at all. The females form the core of the group and can and will defeat hyenas if they are so inclined, eg Lady Liuwa defended her kill against hyenas. The males are only around to protect their genes, mostly from other males.
@Velox415 Doesn't protecting his genes include protecting the pride as well?.. look, I'm not even trying to sell a thesis here.. all I'm trying to say is that the fucking male is around for a reason.. lol..
@metalmonkey88 Lol I agree the male is around for a reason, to keep other males out. It's just that the pride wouldn't fall apart without a male, as the females form the core group and have even been know to gang up on rogue males.
@metalmonkey88 I'm not saying hes not beneficial and I understand why he's there, but you actually can't guarantee they would fall apart without him.
For the majority of their time lions don't live together in one big group, they often split up to form two of three seperate groups across their territory, and these smaller groups manage to live perfectly well on their own.
@ThreeSpotCat You're right that I actually can't guarantee that... but I still feel that male lion is more useful than the credit he gets. Now, I'm just wondering... in these smaller groups, are there young cubs to protect? I honestly am asking you. Because not having them, to me, would seemingly make it easier for these lions to survive without a full pride... what kind of lions were in those groups?
@metalmonkey88 Breeding females come together obviously to make a creche as shown here, so when there are cubs around it tends to be daughters or females too young or old to breed that break off. When the cubs are old enough to take care of themselves it can be any kind of group. Cats are not naturally social animals and lions still find it a challenge to be "overly" social so tend to enjoy smaller groups.
@beiu520 The male acts as the protector of the pride. While the females go out and hunt, it means that the male can stay back and protect the cubs against things like hyenas, buffalo as well as other males. There's almost nothing that would mess with a fully grown male lion. In return, the male gets to eat first. Seems fair to me.
WATCH the video ""introducing daddy to the cubs"" , all!!!! Uploaded here by BBCWorldwide
They have the parts that were edited out ...like when all the females beat up the male-daddy because they didnt recognize him before his intro to the cubs, etc ..& Idk why they always edit out the best parts, like in The Last Lions!

i love lions, but the only thing that im really hating right now its that they take away the food from the lioness..

@lilangel9217
well thats the reward for protecting the pride and cubs
Lions have a big territory and other males try to take it away
and if they do the will kill the cubs
so I think thats fair that males take the first bite

the male lion lazy and sucks, always trying to steal the female meat and even hit his own children.
