  • K12 education was never designed to be what most people think and expect it to be. This video is great, making people think. Thank you.

  • HI Mathew, Great video! It definitely rings true from my experience. One thing education is known for is resisting innovation and especially technology. I like the way you did your credits. I'm familiar with Creative Commons, but some of the other source lists and requirements for reuse are somewhat new to me. Linda

  • Video makes you think....now we just need to make sure we fund the technology needed at our schools to allow for this type of collaborative/web 2.0 learning opportunities and provide training for the teachers like corporations do. I teach this kind of stuff at my high school so everyone needs to know.....many schools are integrating these new technologies and learning modalities today. If you think school is just like it was a 100 years ago; you need to make a visit down to your local school.

  • @TruckeeTeacher I'm a classroom teacher so I visit the local school every day of the school week. As satire, the movie does rely on hyperbole to make its point but I would stand behind its assertion that the structure of schools has not changed much.

I agree on your point about the importance of teacher training and am glad to hear interesting things are happening in your classroom.

  • @lifelonglearners Agree...more change is still necessary and blogs like yours will hopefully help to get educators, administrators, and parents thinking more about this by joining in the conversation which will hopefully lead to positive change. Good day!

  • @lifelonglearners You can find out more about these topics on my blog "The Modern Educator" which can be found on Google Blog search. It is made with Blogger.

  • I think that this is a very creative clip. I enjoyed knowing that out of all the things in the world that have change, the education not which is the most important have not. I think that its education practices should change often to keep up with this modern technology world. That goes to show why the united State doesn't rank highest then all the other country in the world when it comes to academics.

I think that this clip have show that we really need a change as far as education.

  • Can you believe I found this link from a book? I rarely use books, but this week doing research on where school are at with taking up technology I just had to find this brilliant reminder of where do we want from our schools today and for tommorrow. Cheers!

  • @MassielMaite What book referred you to this video?

  • @lifelonglearners

Hi there fabulous long learners. The book is called "Schools and the digit technology: An Overview. It is in Chapter 3, by author Mal Lee addresing the topic of "Schools and the digital technology". The reference is on page 40 and is sited as "Mr Winkle Awakes" (it should be wakes). Book is published by Acer Press and the date is 2010. So it's current! BTW I'm doing research on Mobile Technology and it's effective use in rural education. In case you want to get in touch.

  • @MassielMaite Thanks for the info.

  • Sorry, but I find this video to be out of touch and really bad. Not with just today's world, but with all time in history. The "Did You Know 2" video was about augmenting teaching, not changing it completely. I'd label this video as "well DUH!" But, you also have to experience modern teaching WITH technology as an enhancment. It's truly amazing, and so much better. If you rated this video high, then sit back and watch the World speed away from you, because it will...

  • I'm not sure I understand your point. You seem to disagree with the video at the same time that you say the point is too obvious.

  • Sorry, I'll simplify it for you. The video is a fake story made to point out an opinion to an extreme. The original video uses BOTH methods, not just an outdated method. Extremes don't work, never did. This video's idea is false and does not work. Is that easy enough for you?

  • >The video is a fake story made to point out an opinion to an extreme

Yes it is...that's the definition of satire.

    > The original video uses BOTH methods

What original video are you talking about? You seem to think this movie is a remake of another movie. It is not. And what methods are you talking about?

    > This video's idea is false and does not work.

What do you think the video's idea is? Perhaps you misunderstood it.

  • 1. Satire: the use of irony, sarcasm, ridicule, or the like, in exposing, denouncing, or deriding vice, folly, etc.

    2. This video, as I found it, was a response to the "Shift Happens" video outlining changes in the World. That video shows change, good and notable change for our youth to follow.

    3. The message of this video is clear. Teaching using old methods is best. WRONG! The World is changing. Follow it or fail. Would you want students to fail?

  • 1. Again your definition of satire describes the video.

    2. As I suspected (since you did not understand the sarcasm or irony) you completely misunderstood the video. Had you read the video description, the comments, or followed the link to the blog address at the beginning of the movie, you might have understood that the movie points out how education has not kept pace with changing technology in the world.

  • 1) the video is using satire to point out that many classrooms have not changed in 100 years.

    2) No, nothing of the sort. Whatever gave you that idea? It has little in common with Shift Happens, even as a response.

    3) See 1) above in YOUR OWN post: The message of this video is CLEARLY SATIRICAL: The world is changing but education is not. Teaching using old methods is not working and we need to change, it's so old and outmoded that a guy from 100 years ago recognizes it and feels at home!

  • @MrTimothyevan - Whoops I must have miss read Scott's comments thinking he approved the video. I like the satirical video, I've been led to this by a journal. You are right to point out that classrooms have not changed fast enough, unlike other industries. I'm researching mobile technology and it's effective use in rural education. Hope you're having a great week. Cheers.

  • @scottwilkins

Spot on Scott! It's what I'm finding out just how many schools are taking too long to let go of their old methods. Enjoyed your comments. Cheers Massiel.

  • Scott-first of all, your snobbish writing down to the poster "Sorry I'll simplify it for you" is repugnant. Grow up.

YOU are the one that is entirely missing the point of this video in your critique, so perhaps you need things simplified a bit...oops! Now who looks "out of touch?"

  • Hi i am Tashley Gaines. I am a student at south alabama. This video gave a sense of the difference between 'old school' and 'new school' teaching. I feel that it should be a balance between the two. I love the technology but I also like the idea of students sitting in desks listening to teachers and doing work.

  • This is one video required to watch and comment on for one of my current classes: Microcomputing Systems in Education at the University of South Alabama. I believe this video was one of many attempts to enlighten future and present teachers who live in the year 2010, yet still maintain an "old school" classroom, literally.

  • This was a fun video to watch for mye EDM 310 course at the Univ. of South Alabama. The use of the animated Mr. Winkie was very clever. I wonder what schools will be like in the next 100 years.

  • I watched this video for my EDM310 class. I loved how you showed the need for more technology in classrooms and portrayed the drastic differences between our schools and today's place of employment.

  • I am watching this video for my EDM310 class. I thought this video was humorous because it showed how the older generation has been stunned by new technology.

  • sophomoric

  • im watching this video for my edm310 class at the university of south alabama. being a sophomore in college, i remember using computers since i was in elementary school. computers have been a prominent tool in my education and i think have contributed to the education i received. computers, in my opinion, are necessary for learning and can only help. not hurt.

  • i watched this video for my edm310 class, i think it is a great and funny way to portray and important message.

  • watching this video for EDM310 has made me see how in hospitals and offices have better technology opportunities than students in school. we should be giving our students the best opportunities that would help keep the students engaged and keep up with the times that are at hand.

  • I had to watch this video for my EDM 310 class at University of South Alabama. I feel that some things are best if done by the old standards, but at the same time education has to move with the times. It amazes me how far we have come, and I'm happy to know that the world is more advance than it was 100 years ago.

  • Mr. Winkle is adorable. If schools are the same as they were 100 years ago, that may say a few things about the schools: either there should be some serious upgrades made, or what worked 100 years ago may still work in teaching the same things that were taught in Mr. Winkle's days. Obviously, different times call for different measures, but if teachers are still teaching reading, writing, and arithmetic, wouldn't the old-fashioned way STILL work?

  • The high school dropout rate in an urban district like Los Angeles is estimated at 33% and the U.S. education system consistently ranks below other countries. We're not going to stop teaching the three R's but is teaching them "the old way" really working?

  • I agree schools are outdated & not up with the rest of the world. The united sates needs more technology in its schools for our students to advance in the future, and we need more budgets for education to accomplish this task.

  • Agreed that more funding is necessary but more funding doesn't necessarily translate into transforming education or true technology integration without vision and planning.

  • I watched this video for class EDM 310. After watching this, I realize how far we have come with the technology that we use and how much it really has helped us. High school really hasn't changed at all ; teachers are still teaching and students are still bored.

  • I was informed of this video in my EDM310 class. I found it interesting that we have had so many technological advances in our hospitals and offices, but our schools havent really recieved much attention.

  • Comment removed

  • I agree that school systems especially high schools need computer applications and multimedia learning. Not only are kids into it but it will be a necessary skill to have entering the workforce. Whats strange to think about is in 4rd grade I had a computer lab then I didn't see another computer until high school.

  • I enjoyed this video, it gave some good information. I was informed about it in my EDM 310 class at the University of South Alabama. But I wonder do our public school system has the money to even make technology better right now.

  • It is true that many schools use computers or other technologies for no more than grade and information storage systems. I attended a school that used computers to teach typing. While this was good it was all the computers were used for. The library had computers but access was limited. My school also had an electronics class that I myself took. The class was scrapped after I graduated. It is a shame really that many schools do not make good use of technology when they have it at their disposal.

  • I had to watch this for EDM310, I agree that high school was boring and does not use enough of the resources that are available to them.

  • Although cute, I felt that this video was too harsh on the school system. I was receiving grades via the internet through the use of the my public school's computer lab.

  • While the movie uses hyperbole to make its point, the example of technology in schools you have cited does not represent any transformation of curriculum or learning or true technology integration, merely convenience.

Also, it's important not to assume that everyone's educational experience was/is like your own.

  • I thought this video was informational and useful. It shows that our schools need to update and teach our children more informative things while using technology. I enjoyed this video.

  • I enjoyed this video, I thought it was very interesting and educational. It was very cute.

  • Thanks for the interesting video! I'm a student at the University of South Alabama, and I was required to watch this video for my EDM 310 class.

  • It is pretty scary that the education system doesn't prepare students for the new jobs that technology is providing.

  • This is an interesting video about an often overlooked problem in our public and often private schools as well.

  • just watched this video on my first day of EDM 310... i really enjoyed the story and its' message!

  • This video makes me feel inspired to become a better teacher to my students so that they can become comfortable with computers in the classroom even if it is a history class. This will give students an edge in the workplace when they graduate rather than when I was in school.

  • Short, to the point, and very funny. In 2 mins. we see how we fail to adapt in education.

It is not what we are taught, but how we are taught the that makes people want to learn. Currently my Education Media class in Fairhope, Alabama is teaching me how to make podcast/animation. When I teach, I can show my kids the ecosystem of a rainforest or Spanish lessons in Barcelona. The possibilities are endless. Keeping them interested and creative by allowing them to join in. Boredom kills.

  • And when Rip (he and AmericanRuffian are on a first name basis together) wakes up AGAIN in 100 more years, the year 2109 will still show schools the same as they are.

Remember, schools as we know them were invented by corporations to make obedient employees.

  • We should start a school system like I think it was Belgium, where each kid gets vouchers and can decide what school they want to go to and so the schools have to compete by being innovative to attract their students.

  • But the problem isn't necessarily schools, it's school districts, it's national educational policy, it's lack of leadership from the top. Just having schools compete with one another for students isn't going to necessarily solve those problems.

  • What software did you use to make this?

  • I used Final Cut Pro.

  • Love it... hope to share it with kids so they can begin to challenge the way schools today work!

  • Aewseome!

  • Not many families are able to afford homeschooling or private school...they need the public school system. I don't think it's an either or proposition where we must choose homeschooling OR public school. Homeschool is fine for some but for the rest of us we have an obligation to continue to improve public education.

  • This is critical... public schools are there to make employees who follow orders not to make independent thinking individuals the truth is home school and private school are better that is where the real business people, thinkers, movers and shakers of the world come from!!

  • I don't agree that great people don't come out of public school. I have nothing against home school or private school. However, I prefer to work within the public school system to make changes there.

  • home school is the way to go!! check the history of public schools, they were not created to educate individuals -- without the "evil" public school system, more people would be more successful sooner

  • Many people rely on the public school system for their education... eliminating public schools would put them at a severe disadvantage.

  • not really...it would be different and would be a change...public schools are still fairly new for the most part...in many ways, public schools kill creativity in young people, without the ps, things would work out better...

  • wow, a great message for today's educators!!!!

  • great video Mathew!

  • Simple, yet inspiring! Let's try and change the situation.

  • This is excellent Matthew! Thanks so much will be using this a lot of the future. Cheers.

  • Outstanding Mathew. Thanks for producing and sharing this thought-provoking (and all too true) video.

  • I wish more school administrators would get the idea that technology is a tool and it can greatly help increase learning. I hope lots of people see this video!

  • Sad, but true commentary. This should be shown at school board meetings across the country!

  • Wow! This is clever!
