ASCAP BMI and SOCAN etc. helps you claim royalties for works that you register with them. In Canada it's SOCAN but signing up with them automatically gets you associated with ASCAP or BMI, your choice. It's worth the time it takes to protect your stuff.
@FCO0710 The Library of Congress does not copyright music. If an artist wanted their music copyrighted they go through the U.S. Copyright Office. If the type of music submitted requires it (i.e., published music), the claimant has to mail the Library of Congress a physical copy of their music either in phonorecord or sheet music. But the Library of Congress does NOT copyright music.
@thecardsharp i registered on there but it wont let me log in. i also didnt get no emails from them after i registered. is that normal? do i have to wait or what?
@FCO0710 ey how long does it take to get an account on the library of congress? i registered but when i try to log in it says they dont have my user id, and also i didnt get no email or anything from them.
@damijoshua If you wrote the entire song, even the beats, you own the copyright, if somebody else, help you in the task, is up to you how much percent you will share with them, in band of four for example red hot chilly peppers, they share equally, 25% each one of the royalties, you dont have to pay to the recording studio any royalty, at least they wrote the song wit u (the song is the lyrics and music tracks), you pay for the time using the studio, and their expertise, hope this can help you
@kidkage there's a lot more to this than what is said here. BMI, ASCAP, and SESAC aren't paying a lot of money to all artists, save the ones that have made bona fide hits. With the advent of technology, there are a lot of ways you can talk to itunes without the need for these enforcers to do the work for you. To your question, no, myspace and iTunes doesn't count. Some alternatives are out there where you keep control of your work.
Ive been wanting to start an ascap company. ive noticed they say you have to be published on tv, commercial recording or internet...can someone tell me if myspace or itunes qualifies me?
what if your not a songwriter, i run a label and planned on getting my artist songs on radio,( i am also the producer of this track as well ..) can i my self still register?
The songs aren't tracked. Radio stations submit records of their playlists to the organizations and television producers submit records of songs used in their productions. That's why it's only an estimate. Sometimes people forget or simply don't give this information to the performing rights organizations.
@JackSnr No, they are tracked. Not that mediabase and nielson tracking are all that accurate, but as far as commercial radio is concerned, it's more accurate. Community, (most) internet and college radio stations don't, to my knowledge, pay fees to publishing societies though so that is a different story.
track the songs and how many times they were played? that's pretty cool. i think the biggest breakthrough would be if they could do that on youtube for artists.
but there are always loopholes, like as an artist if you just called up radio stations and requested your own songs and on this website if you had multiple accounts all dedicated to playing your own music.
@prohittas simply freedom to my own works, done by me , no one else has a right to clam any part of that work. or recieve any part in it. Thats how I can do that. Though the message was recorded in nashville, 96 08, just because I wanted too. Independent means just that on your own.
Great video, but I do not understand too much: let's say I sample a song in order to create a beat, how can I figure out if that song has copyright or not?
swiffomatic.....no you don't have to send them the song...... once you go online and register the song with BMI you'r cool. They then have all the information they need to track the song.
I signed up on BMI, but I have no idea what to do next, it's weird. They just grabbed my name and my band's name and info about me and said I was signed up. I need a BMI account number to sign in, but they never gave me one...wtf
ASCAP AND BMI are nothing but bullies who ruin local music and harass small businesses.

Where is the part about how do you copywrite a song?
Ezguitarpick 5 months ago
is this just for songwriters that wrote songs for other artist...or can a artist that write his own songs sign up too?
spark505 10 months ago
@spark505 it ensures you get any royalties from the songs whether you or another artist performs it.as long as you register each song properly
MrROTD 2 months ago
Hay so to be clear..you would copyright the song first and then apply for one of these companies.

you dont copywright a song via ASCAP, you do it via the library of congress. Though the rest of this info in this video is correct

Some of us are independent of any of that as the moment you create a song, it is copyright protected.

The song most likely is registered, and you have to contact the label about clearance. There are also companies that help with sample clearances.
