6:00-8:00 is too sluggish. The tension needs to build. The 1st movement was wonderful...are the small problems distracting the players? Around 7:00 is mechanical..
@Kaggypants I truly love Philippe Entremont's recordings with Ormandy and Bernstein; all four are available from Sony--I'd like your feedback on those recordings. He does No. 2 with Bernstein conducting the NY Philharmonic.
I love live performances. This is so beautiful! What great interpretation, so sensitive, just like what Rachmaninov would have asked for. Thank you for your great artistry, Tcherkin, bravo!
It was Eric Carmen, back in 1976, who originally appropriated this. He mistakenly assumed it was in the public domain. Celine Dion's version is only a cover.
@tcherkin actually it wasn't an out of tune G#. It's a F#4 and F#5 that were played. But he also grazes the F4. As proof that it wasn't out of tune, listen to the F#4 and F#5 at the tail end of 3:50. You don't hear the same mistake/wrong note that was in 3:48.

@tcherkin I don't think it was out of tune: it's because the piano plays a G-sharp and the orchestra plays a A. The transition was maybe a bit sharp for the ears, but I didn't notice it lol
When I write my stories, I play classical (some rock too) but for some reason if I am writing a part with the main character's childhood or a pinnacle part, I find myself using this song to have inspiration.
Love this Concerto since high school.Teary when I listened to this even back then. To think the theme was used for pop tune and also became a hit. " All By Myself "..I think it was.:)
As cynical a f*ck as i've become, this movement STILL brings me to tears. Congratulations Georgi on a truly heartfelt interpretation of Rach's greatest work.
Yeah, what exactly happened at 3:48? And the person that said things had gone a bit out of tune was right. One of the strings on the G sharp (an octave above the first note the piano plays) has slipped by the sound of it. I guess there's not much you can do by this stage in the performance. The piano was having the s**t bashed out of it in the first movement though. These things happen.
Sounds like someone hit the wrong partial in the horn part, or maybe they didn't play out on the dissonance... Hard to tell what instrument that was at that point.. very nice otherwise!
Yes, I heard that. Ii thought it was just my ear. But it did go out of tune. THank GOd. I wasn't imagining or perhaps too critical, because I wasn't. I was enjoying the Concerto.
IMPOSSIBLE to play this TOO SLOW...Even Rach himself plays it TOO FAST. (Plus, he sounds bored with himself in all performances). Listen to Weissenberg: Correct Tempo! And it is Cherkin himself who is controlling the conductor and orchestra from speeding it up! Note how nice the tempo contrast is from 05:10
Alegoo92. I love the wit of your' Sibelius comment. At the same time I disagree with your tempo observation. My take is that tempo is off...only when the musicians technique can not support it. And, I think it works in this performance.
Yes, it was Eric Carmen, and I read that he thought the music was in the public domain, but it actually wasn't...so he had to pay a fine of some sort for violating the copyright laws...
everybodysgreen - sure, darling, it is their right - but, isn't it still wonderful that someone thought that a piece of music was so beautiful, that he wanted to do something about it and show it in the next century? After all, I think Rachmanioff in his grave would be happier about the compliment than the monetary gain - what do you think?
I don't care about a piano key being slightly out of tune, I just really like the way he plays. One of my favorite pianist!

@dedbusted It's fine. The rubato is perfect and it DOES build beginning at 6:58. He adjusts the tempo and arcs into fortissimo quite nicely.
Clean your ears out and listen again.

@Kaggypants I'll try listening again when I'm in the mood. Sometimes another listen will prove a person wrong.

@dedbusted Maybe so...but you might also have a valid point.
Can you recommend another recording to me so that I may compare? I am not a fan of Kissin's.

The question now is, was Rachmaninoff a real human??
Personally, I think he was from the planet of music, not this planet.
BTW, while the whole concerto is great, it is so great at 05:08
