I think the best version of this symphony I've ever heard is by the Israeli Philharmonic with Zubin Mater conducting played at Masada in 1991. Classical music does it for me, that's for sure and the 5th movement of Mahler's 2nd just leaves me emotional drained and usually in tears. It doesn't matter how many times I listen to it. Olsen's interpretation is lovely but then it would be hard to screw up something so completely perfect as this symphony.

I think that the new gold standard in Mahler's "Ressurection" is Gustavo Dudamel at the 2011 BBC Proms with the Simon Bolivar Orchestra and the National Youth Choir of Great Britain . Its on YouTube.
The gold standard has to be the Rattle with CBSO in his final concert in Birmingham. It is like a master class in conducting...and how passion drives this piece. In some respects, it doesn't matter who is conducting because the music is greater than everything.

This is not a professional orchestra, and they do a great great job for what they do. I went to hear them play Mahler 3, and it was very adequate. You must remember what you have here - an orchestra of people who come together for the love of Mahler. Berlin it ain't, but boy would I love to play with them!

Nice job... and also nice to hear real bells in the finale. OK, it's not a world-class performance, but it's a first rate performance by a very good regional group!
I liked this version as well or better than Bernstein's or Rattle's or Abbaddo's. It didn't drag, I liked the bells and the drums, and it finished with a bang.
You should see Abbado's version - you haven't lived 'till you've seen Abbado do it.. haha. The version on his Mahler CD collection is even better than the youtube one.

Fine effort from this group but the gold stardard has to be from Abbado and the LFO.

I totally agree: Rattle's version, Bernstein's version, Myung Whun Chung's version, Solti's version and Abbado's version are all perfection.
But still Haitink is better. Sorry.

Where has Rattle's ending of 2 gone with the CBSO? PLEASE re-post!

The Simon rattle version with the Birmingham Symphony Orchestra (which USED to be on YouTube) is perfection.

@NonInflatable Solti with Chicago Symphony is perfection.

really nice version! the ritardandos and the percussion accent are excellent, unfortunately the audio quality does not help enjoying a little more.

It sounds like a march. Seriously. Gross.

Choir is too soft its a bit fast as well ... the Bernstein version on is here is FAR superior to this performance.

I really don't think its the orchestra but the recording engineer

This symphony and Mahler's Eighth are his greatest symphonies.

I really like this! Olson features the huge drum rolls and carillons at the finale that Rattle and Bernstein don't accent.

Another concert ruined by the orchestra covering up the chorus.
Observer585 4 years ago
yeah this recording doesn't do the chorus much justice
