I was just thinking about this show yesterday. I loved it. I actually dreamed of being a contestant. Glad to see this show here. Brought back some good 80s memories.
If they ever bring this show back on TV, Britney Spears would no longer have a career. Why pay $70 for a ticket to see someone lip-sync, when you can watch it on TV for free?
My sister and her best friend tried out for this show in like 84/85. I don't remember what happened but they were so thrilled to do this, she loved this show! I was like 3/4 yrs old at the time so I really don't remember this show. This is cool to see just regular everyday kids could be on a show and have fun singing to their favorite songs!
This is too funny! I wish they had this show on DVD, I would totally buy it. I remember the Jets, too. They played at my high school way back in their heyday.
I remember seeing this show when I was very young, and there was one person on it who dressed up as half-man/half-woman, doing a duet song. But I don't remember the song or the singers he was supposed to be. Anyone remember that?
@missoctober77, I remember that! I've been trying to find a clip of it.
I also remember the one with the guy that had the costume where he had a "mom" body and his head was the baby in the snugglie. I had never seen anything like that before!
I used to watch this on WPIX channel 11 in New York. Great times. I loved this show back then. I was 11years old. Bring this oldie but goodie back from the dead.
here in Florida it was Saturday night 5 pm Dance Fever 5:30 puttin on the Hits, 6pm Solid Gold 7 pm Gordon Solies championship wrestling from Florida & 8 pm Hee Haw
@bigwillietheb It looks like Saturday night was a good night for T.V. down in Florida. I live in Minnesota & I had to wait until 10:35 p.m. on Saturdays to watch this. Kind of hard to do at times when you're only 8 years old. (At least that's how old I was when this clip was first on T.V.)
@JasonL77 hmm 10:35 pm We had already gone to bed but it was 11:35 pm here since we are 1 hour ahead of you, but usually at 10 pm here we always watched Hunter the only thing about growing as a kid was we only 1 TV in the house until Christmas of 1985 & dad bought my sisters a 13 inch black&white tv & then when I turned 14 in 1988 I got one too that Christmas oh what memories, now my parents have 3 tv 's
@bigwillietheb Now that I think about it, Saturdays in my house at that time were the first hour NWA's World Championship Wrestling on WTBS at 5:05, WWF Championship Wrestling at 6:00, I can't remember what was on from 7 to 9, but Hunter was 9:00 p.m. (Looking back, that was a pretty bad-ass show.), the news at 10:00, then 10:35, Puttin' On The Hits. Unfortunatly, being in Minnesota, no Gordon Solie, but we had Verne Gagne' AWA on Saturday afternoons. Just as good.
Holy cow I think I was 7 or 8 years old maybe younger. I remember when poths had auditions here in dallas back then, i cried because my mom wouldn't take me.
my favorite was the one where a guy used puppets...(at least one looked like animal from the muppet show.)his act was done to. "lean on me" by -club nouveau.- In fact...It's the only one i remember. :)
I was on this show the 87-88 season. I ate dinner with Alen Fawcets Dad. Here is some trvia. Alen and Farah Fawcet are not related, but were born on the same day! I made it to the final that season and there was a 3way tie with perfect scores. The act that won was Houston the Guy who did "Endless Love", myself and the other act receive $5k consolation prizes. Houston also won the Grand Final the final season and got a gig at a Vegas Cassino. The other 2 acts,we got to keep our diapers!
This was really the American Idol of the mid '80s what with the judges and the cheesiness in some places. But Ashlee Simpson's SNL fiasco with her lip synching makes this show look good. It was only good during the 1985-1986 season, then things looked downhill from there.
Thanks so much for posting this. This is a rare one! I remember this show. Do you have any more clips from this show? Do you have the opening sequence?
