If we simply state that higher intelligence was always here and doesn't need anything behind it then why not save a step and say the universe was simply always here. Saying that the universe is just here is not an explanation. It's an assumption. Saying there was a designer is simply an inference to the best explanation based upon human experience with intelligent causation. It doesn't mean we therefore know who or what the designer is, however. And infinite regress itself is a metaphysical imposition, not a necessary conclusion from the evidence. There are other options to consider besides the two extremes.

Your stats omit the obvious such as the fact that church attendance in the UK is about 15%, yet the churches claim over 90% of the population as subscribers! In fact I'm counted as Roman Catholic...even though not a single person in my family was ever religious!
