@drfred26 I'm sorry nobody farted or ate his own puke. If Loriot knew the pure essence of comedy by breaking his own nuts with bowling balls, he would've done it, I'm sure.
what ... "You Dödel" means "you cock" or "idiot" in German? Hehehe ... oh well ... I think the German teachers, who taught such words have no idea ofthe German language, or they are idiots themselves. This is really embarrassing and baby talk, and do not fit as a translation here. By the way: These are just fancy words that were invented solely for the "yodeling school."
it is indeed hard to understand without the cultural, social and at least even historical background information... the absurdity of the whole situation is quite difficult to explain.
@drfred26 best german comedy? your joking. if your not blind you can see that this is an video from about 1970 and the... sence of humour was quite different as it is today. today our comedians are much funnier.
na ja, heutige deutsche comedy ist vorallem oft unter der Guertellinie oder auf Kosten anderer... Ich denke nicht dass man Loriot mit Mittermeier, eure Muetter, Stefan Raab etc vergleichen braucht... Cheers from Canada.
@0815Zocker Can you please give examples of comedians/TV shows you find funny in Germany today? I'm curious to look them up.... I actually liked this skit - it reminds me of Monty Python! :)
The most funny guy in Germany might be Helge Schneider. There are plenty of videos on youtube, but I think you can hardly laugh about him if you are not a native german speaker.
@drfred26 The comedic aspects aren't so much in the words (which sound just awefully silly in German), but in the seriousness, by which people handle even the silliest tasks. (very German, watch our political debates, kinda comedy too) Plus: This skit is incomplete - there's an interview with the husband of the woman afterwards, in which he repeats word by word her explanation, why it is best for an emancipated woman to have a yodel diploma. Time- and society-related fun, of course. =)
ob loriot für engländer verständlich ist? ich mein es kommt da ja auf die ausdrucksweisen und diese sprache an ob man sowas synchroinisieren kann? geschweige dennn untertiteln...
They cut off the best part and the whole reason this sketch is so funny.....They go out on the street and interview her husband, he says exactly what she says word for word. It's as if her whole persepctive about being independent is just her rehashing her husbands words and she is not independent at all. They totally flip the script!!! I love Loriot!
No it's not. 'Dödel' could mean 'dick', or could refer also to a 'dumb person'. But in this comedy piece it's a phonetic element without deeper meaning. This is 70's TV and there is certainly no references to 'dick' at that time.
Learn German(yes it would be difficould) to watch the original!
I just asked myself, if most Americans really understand that this is satire, and should give ris to laughter not admiration, sometimes life can be so much funnier than fiction, and prejudices are very long-living, or is it just me?
Well, I lived for six years in the US, actually in Wisconsin, and sometimes you hear such amazing things about a German that you cannot get it, if it is a serious statement or not. So, according to media, many Americans believe that most Germans do "yodel" (and there ARE actually schools for yodeling because it IS an art) and are wearing leather pants. Anyway, if anyone would understand that it IS satire then I am reassured,

auf englisch ist doch der ganze witz weg mit dem Dödel
McJulia91 6 months ago
@McJulia91 thats true ! and a reason to rewrite it in english, for all germans do allready know this:
There is some kind of joke in the words that cannot be translated into english. because you can also see "du dödel" as some kind of "you jerk".

Yes, in my opinion its the very best...
But i on the other hand i can understand, why you cannot find it funny..
The reason is: you must be a very well educated german human being to understand this very, very sophisticated intrinsic kind of humour....
Not even many germans understand it...
With kind regards
