My nephew now owns the Pound Puppy that I had as a kid, which is a Beagle, and it's one of the very few things that survived my very active childhood. I also watched the cartoon series, and had one of the books, but it wasn't either of the ones you showed, and the title escapes me at the moment.
Remember watching the series, but never was lucky enought o buy the toy.
Thank you for the trip down memory lane.
And thank you for respecting these older things and not doing as others our age are doing, which is to ridicule and put down old things to appear "cool" and "hip" to younger audiences.
Wow, I learned something new from this video. I got a pound puppy piggy bank of the dog crying at 4:04. I never even knew that it was from the Pound Puppy series.
I have had that piggy bank since before I can even remember.
In Britain I think Hornby,a company which is better known for their electric, scale model trains, had the licence to produce/distribute these toys in the 80s.I also remember there was a big following for them here, especially amongst girls in my school.
I also had many of the plushes like you were showing and I remember the carrying cases. I think I had almost a dozen different Pound Puppies. I remember the first I ever got was a big gray one.
OMG! I loved Pound Puppies as a kid. They actually had two different series from what I remember. The leader of them as you were talking about was Cooler. There was also Whooper, a puppy that loved to make up wild stories. Howler was the one with the hat. The two main female dogs were Bright-eyes and Nose Marie. I believe those were all the main dogs.
Yes, I still have mine and I had the "Pick of the Litter" Golden Book though it's long gone now. I have two large ones and four small ones, one of those being from Hardee's, and one small Pound Purrie.
I don't know if it was a pound puppy, but I remember having a stuffed dog that looked just like the big brown one on the right. It had a little squeaker inserted in it's belly..... does that one squeak???
I had so many Pound Puppies! I remember getting a large pound puppy mother, and then I got lots of little baby puppies to go with her. Later on, they released some that are the size of my pinky finger ;p
My grandma had one that made noise if you walked past it.. It stayed in the guest bedroom. randomly in the night it would start making nois and scare the crap outta me...

The term "Pound Puppies" sounds less like a name and more like a command to me.
