I like the kid sized match alot but those... wait another 5 years maybe. And yeah! Alex is right, why do they only play soccer, i wanna see them play hockey, american football, baseball and even golf!!
"This shit" is technology at it's finest. Sorry if it doesn't meet your high expectations. I'm sure when it's developed to a shiny white consumer gadget with the apple logo on, you'll spend your months paycheck on it. It's all got to start somewhere, and I guess you have little idea of how very difficult it is to do what they're achieved with these bots.
White, referencing the currently popular 'Apple' style which everything is copying in sci-fi and tech. And these may 'suck' compared to human players, but there's still at the fore-front of our tech, which is actually quite impressive considering the task.
this tech level is 'useless', but we must go through these 'useless' stages of development to reach really amazing robot tech. Hence my comment about how you just want the finished consumer product in it's gimicky packaging. This isn't a product, this is research in progress. SUCCESSFUL research, which is constantly improving.
@BobTheElder not really, you had like what a decade of this robocup. what you have to show for it? when i look back on this , all i see is failure and incompetence.
@AlexRacineTV YOu dont get it - It will be always humans who will create those robots and programm them to kill people. And not 10 years. Watch Petman video - military DARPA founded robot (for killing)
well what do you expect, this is in america, americans cant built shit, they always have to have people from other countries come and built shit for them
@bvprulz If you read the official rules, the robots are supposed to mimic human senses as closely as possible, including the use of cameras for vision.
Wow, a simple game is a terrible challenge for a robot but what this guys have done to get to this may seem senseless but this is just the beginning. For those who critic negatively what these teams have accomplished, well, what would you expect from them?
Look at all the robots have to do. First, stand on two legs and walk. Not a minor task. Then not just object recognition, but recognition on a field and with lots of other things going on (i.e. people). Navigate to that point, kick the ball (another balancing trick), and aim for the goal. We've seen lots of robots to these tasks individually, but not often all together and usually at a corporate level, not college. And almost always Japanese. Go VA Tech! Turns out there are American efforts.
this is just most superflously lame... i mean whats with that kick.. ??? pinochio can pack mightier punch that you... (good job with making the robo walk and not mangle itself into a mush)
ha ha, okay some observations. The Dutch can't ever catch a break, even in robosoccer. also, Germany's coaching style still leads to very technical soccer.
Fast bi-pedal motion without losing balance is hard! The evolutionists would have us believe that we have this ability by chance? I guess that chance is a whole bunch smarter than we are.
Funny how the chubby guy on the winning team picks his nose while setting up the robot and then shakes hands with the losing team with the same hand... :P
@ThinkTank255 Don't be so negative. Do recall that half some years ago, a single computer unit filled up an entire. Now, your iPod is probably more powerful than any of those computers and fits in your hand.
I'm not really being negative, just realistic. This, in no way reflects state-of-the-art robotics. They could do much better than this with current technology.
I'm just saying, they could have done a much better job, even at low cost. It really comes down to the programming. Instead of trying novel approaches, they are all clearly going straight from the textbook with no imagination or creativity. The whole point of these competitions is failure and learning from mistakes, and I just don't see enough failure to justify the existence of these competitions.
You clearly arn't aware of the technologies involved in making these robots, programming is the easiest part... Designing a light weight robot that can stand on two feet and walk independantly was austounding; now to make it shift it's weight, swing its leg,and kick a ball without falling over in the process...
Besides this is only the second year of "adult sized" robot soccer players, so you should really do your homework before critizing a new technology.
And that's exactly the problem. They have exactly the same attitude. Far from being "the easiest part", as a person that understands the intricacies of robotics, programming is the core issue impeding progress. As an example, I'm working with a bunch of mechanical engineers that THINK they know something about robotics. I come in there in 2 weeks and do more to improve their situation with a few hundred lines of code than they have in a year.
But the robots can only benefit from so much code, in the end it comes down to the physical parts not being able to move as fast or as fluidly as your code can send signals.
Coding is far from easy, I'm surly not degrading the skill it takes to write such intricate lines.
But having delt with actuator's, hydrolics and various parts it takes to build a robot, physical technology needs to pull its socks up before coding can put to its full potential. and that costs cash.
You can only use the best actuator technology available for the price you are willing to pay. As for programming, there no limitation to how much you can improve the algorithms. I just really think they need to focus more on the code.
By 2050 they want a complete robotic team to compete against humans... look at the advance in technology in only the last 20 years; leaps and bounds... In 40 years I don't see how we couldn't make that dream a reality.
