We won the war a long time ago, the current stability in Iraq reflects the dominance of Sunnis over Shiites. You can't have a civil war if it is one-sided. So Murtha is absolutely right, we did not win the civil war militarily. The Sunnis did! Had we pulled out after the fall of Saddam, wouldn't the same thing have occurred? How many lives would have been saved? Don't tell me that Al Quaeda would've taken over because they represented a very small % of who are troops were fighting.

Murtha has served in 2 wars and is speaking for those in the Pentagon who didn't have the freedom to speak because they are on active duty. He also normally visits injured veterans in Walter Reed. He knows what he's talking about.

Most of the insurgents in Iraq are home-grown because the U.S. occupation is losing the battle for "hearts and minds." Terrorism depends on the ability of terrorists to gain support from a suppressed population. It is very difficult to target them because they morph into the civilian population. Terrorists are not created in a vacuum.

They gain their idealogy as a means to fight against a militarily superior enemy and they gain support from civilian populations whose "hearts and minds" are affected by imperialist aggression and injustice. The more that people are suppressed, the more of them become terrorists. To stop this process all countries, especially the most powerful must set an example and follow international law. The U.S. will have far more allies if it does not act illegally in the realm of foreign affairs.

Iraq was far more stable before Bush went in. Al Qaeda is the threat to the West - Sadaam was a minnow by comparison. Al Qaeda would not have been harboured by Sadaam. Now they thrive in Iraq. Sadaam was a tyrant but the body count under the illegal American invasion is far higher. Conventional warfare alone is not an efficient way to defeat an insurgency.

There was not much room to do anything undercover in Iraq especially after Gulf War 1 with the no-fly zones and so on. People there lived under an iron fist and the main cause of death was starvation due to western sanctions. If Iraqis hated Sadaam so much - how come they were unable to dislodge him but can bleed the occupiers dry with daily attacks?

Murtha's a GENUINE American hero. Bush and Cheney never served in combat, and ran like hell when they were called to. They're WIMP ChickenHawks.

Bush is losing in Iraq because he had no plan (other than making BILLIONS for Cheney's Halliburton) so somebody has to have a plan...and Murtha's got a smart one.

Republicans haven't won a war since 1898, and it's obvious why - because they're incompetent. And Bush proves it, yet again. Republicans have no idea how to win wars...and never will.

This country hasnt won a war since the Democrats decided their politics is more important than unity.

Murtha is just wrong when he says 'we cant win this militarily'. We cant win on the battlefield when half the country is idealogically fighting on behalf of the enemy.
