They were definitely taken aback a bit. They do the kissing thing in France too...but only if you are friends/familiar with the other person. Otherwise, we just shake hands if we're meeting someone for the first time. And men only shake hands too. Only females do the kiss or between a male and female. I guess in Eastern Europe, it's even more casual. BTw, that chick must be close to 190 cm because Koyama is 177 cm, which is a respectable height, but she absolutely towers over him!

It depends. In Spain we kiss both our cheeks. Actually kiss them. Doing it as you have despicted will seem very posh and not very nice. If you do not want to greet somebody in this way it is better if you shake hands.
