  • Such a sad race. If I had lived back then I would been so insanely happy that Hill won the championship because I'm American and a big F1 fan (shocking I know). But I would have been so sad over Von Tripps's death

  • At 19 sec you can see his body

  • like G.Villeneuve, Ronnie peterson and Moss, Wolfgang is a Champion without a crown.

  • besides graham hill is an englishman not an american

  • He could have won the world championship... But i guess he would have prefered to live instead and fight for it year after year...

    R.I.P :(

  • 15 spectators died in this accident. RIP driver and all.

  • worse was le mans in 1955. Levegh crashed and his engine, gearbox assembly and rear axle flew into the crowd @ 150 mph, killing 79 people.

  • Those little fences were made to keep the people off the track, not to keep the cars out of the stands.

Thank god safety has improved a lot since then.

  • Phil Hill died today from Parkinson's disease.

  • Indeed. RIP Phil.

  • @MonacoLager1 Phil Hill was a occassional champion with the von trips die

  • Sorry Bealzbob but you're wrong , first mortal accident in F1 World Championship was the one involving Chet Miller on may 15th 1953 at Indy's 500 miles, race valid for the

    F1 championship .

  • You are correct. I stand corrected. Thanks.

  • Graham Hill - UK born

    Phil Hill - USA born

    Get it?

  • Then it would not have been an honest result.

  • maybe but schumacher dilliberatley turned into hill in 94 and took him out and won the champ fair? he did it again in 97 but he failed - letting trips win the champ posthomously would have been a great way to honour his life as a racing driver like with rindt in '70

  • To be fair, theres not a lot you can do. If a pilot is killed while leading the championship then the other guys may not like it but they race on. Jacky Ickx tried his best in 1970 but wouldn't have enjoyed his title and I'm pretty sure Colin Chapman took no pleasure in taking the constructors title in 1973 from Tyrrell after they withdrew following Cevert's crash.

  • maybe but it was some consellation from the death of cevert

  • I don't think Hill knew that the crash was fatal until after he finished.

  • omg i have this dvd the history of cars race of 60`s

  • Wow, the Parabollica Corner, the same corner that claimed Jochen Rindt as well and HE ended up winning the championship posthumously and the only one to have ever done so. Didn't know that Von Trips had finished second in the 1961 season, only beaten out by 3 points by Hill. Hill unknowingly was given a gift by Von Trips because he probably would not have won the championship had Von Trips not crashed and lost his life.

  • Unknowingly? Hill would have had to be an extraordinarily ignorant fellow to overlook said occurrence.

  • no wonder you've got (-9) thumbs down, because youre an idiot. have some respect for those who died, so go hate somewhere else you dipshit indy500 yank.

  • Hill Remains the only US Born driver to ever win the F1 Championship.

Only other American to win was Andretti, who was born in Italy.

  • It's amazing to see how safe F1 cars are now compared to the 50's and 60's. On the other hand, all these safety measures "took the thrill away" as Tony Brooks declared. I love the beauty and the purely mechanical aspects of early racing cars. Nowadays F1 is dictated only by sponsors and money...

  • he would have died even if he didnt crash that day, he was booked for a flight later that evening that crashed killing all of its passengers

  • Is this true ? Have you any details as it's an excellent piece of trivia if it is true.

  • seriously? where did you get that from?

  • True story. He had a reservation together with a classmate on a President Airlines' DC-6 that crashed over Scotland.

  • very unlucky guy...

  • Actually that's an old urban myth that somehow found its way into racing folklore. But it's not true, in fact the plane crash in question occured hours BEFORE the Italian Grand Prix. Still, doesn't make Von Trips death any less tragic either way...

  • @RTBaLLa i know it.

  • Hahaha not.

  • 13 ppl dies

  • Whatta days! They didn`t even stop the race after the death of a driver and several other people. That`s really strange.

  • No, Onofre Marimon was the first racing death in F1. Fangio held his compatriot as he died.

  • First Death In F1 Right?

  • nasty crash
