@ashajess OED (Oxford English Dictionary), not LED.
What she's telling him is that the Oxford English Dictionary researchers traced the origin of the term "luvvy" as used to describe actors and found that the first person to use that word in that way was Stephen Fry.
The editing of this episode annoys me ever so slightly because the first time I watched it on telly I thought Thompson was charming and warm and mildly amusing but ultimately in the funny stakes, left for dead by the others, particularly Fry and Mitchel. But looking at some of the footage that wasn't in the half hour, this and the stuff about their Cambridge days she was absolutely smashing it.
The Oxford English Dictionary is famous for letting its readers know the origin or words and phrases. In particular it tries to identify the very first instance that a particular word was used viz its source.
Apparently Emma Thompson found out that the OED showed Stephen Fry as the source of the word 'Luvvies' which the intro states is "a term used frequently to deride acting folk such as their good selves". The humour arose because Stephen Fry was cleverly led into a trap.
Hi! It's Season 6, Episode 11 , episode titled 'Film and Fame.' It was quite a while ago now, but I believe I got it from the extended, late night version.
I would LOVE to be the first citation of anything in the OED! Wow! The only thing I can take credit for is inventing the phrase "fierce femme" but the OED doesn't include phrases.
Just looked up the OED (through online subscription)- and yes, that's right. "1988 S. FRY in Guardian 2 Apr. 17/8 Acting in a proper grown-up play, being a lovie, doing the West End, shouting in the evenings, as the late Patrick Troughton had it."
Hmm... The fact that they get the text "luvvie alarm" up on the screens seems to suggest that it was somehow... planned? I mean, how could anyone design that thing in 30 seconds?
The Luvvie Alarm was used in two previous episodes, once on John Sessions when he name dropped Robert Redford and then later on Stephen himself when he name dropped the Duke of Westminster.
I looked it up in the OED, and this is what it says: "An actor or actress, esp. one who is considered particularly effusive or affected; (hence) anyone actively involved with entertainment or the arts.
1988 S. FRY in Guardian 2 Apr. 17/8 Acting in a proper grown-up play, being a lovie, doing the West End, shouting in the evenings, as the late Patrick Troughton had it."
The Luvvie alarm was first introduced because of John Sessions habit of name dropping famous actors as often as possible, i think it was first used in either series 1 or 2
he's the man sitting next to Emma in this clip. he's an actor and has done a lot of improv comedy shows like whose line is it anyway when it was orig a radio show and when it was on brittish tv. he's made many appearances on qi
@starry4sky The duh alarm goes off for the British, but for the rest of us Thompson, Fry and Hugh Laurie (from the U.S. show House) were on the same college comedy team and later did comedy as a team on British TV. Fry and Thompson have known each other for almost a couple of decades at this point.
An actor or actress, esp. one who is considered particularly effusive or affected; (hence) anyone actively involved with entertainment or the arts.
1988 S. FRY in Guardian 2 Apr. 17/8 Acting in a proper grown-up play, being a lovie, doing the West End, shouting in the evenings, as the late Patrick Troughton had it.
I love the way Emma totally sets up Stephen. She's acting very serious and interested in his opinion just to turn it all around on him. Her expressions the whole time just crack me up. The woman has such a gift for comedy!
That complete change of emotion is just masterful. Raising him up like that and then cutting his throat.... But I still laugh at Fry's reaction whenever I see this vid.
1988 S. FRY in Guardian 2 Apr. 17/8 Acting in a proper grown-up play, being a lovie, doing the West End, shouting in the evenings, as the late Patrick Troughton had it.
I get my definitions from the OCD. I have to open and close the book three times and then find the page flicking backwards from the end.

just for the record, I would love to debate Stephen Fry on any given topic. I think he'd be a fantastic opponent.
This is to give you an idea of who I would be willing to debate.
I would be terrified to debate Emma Thompson on any topic. She is a scary scary lady and I feel she would eat me alive.

@MatildaSeptember Thanks for the reply.
Understanding how important coal is to your country I understand now.
Right now I am thinking about the movie, "Molly Maguires" with Richard Harris and Sean Connery.
Thank you once again for posting the GFU episodes.
I am crazy about Stefanie Powers as she reminds me so much of my wife in Brasil that you see posted at my channel.
Cheers!

From the online OED:
luvvie, n.
Brit. colloq. (humorous or mildly derogatory).
