I ain't no sailor but even I would of steered the pointy end towards the shore , must be an insurance job, Check the crew out they carn't believe their luck they are alive, guess they will use the insurance to buy a motor home and go hand feed Grisly bears next.
@realbudgiesmuggler I can tell you are no sailor. Going into the shore is the last thing you want to do with a boat. It is proverbial that it's not the sea which is dangerous; it's the hard things all around it. This vessel seems to have dragged its anchor until it went so closely ashore it was in the surf. That's where the water is so shallow the waves break. The breaking waves lifted the boat up and down until the keel struck the bottom and the bottom ripped out . That's when she sank.
Actually no boat can take those kind of conditions if it is just sitting and not underway. Violent looking waves for sure! Cool video! Another situation where I hope the people had good insurance coverage.
Gilligan would have saved this boat . He was skinny but fast and the fat ''skipper'' would have just screwed things up. NOW the ''professer'' would have wasted the time with his coconut calculator.
Mary Ann and the rest............would just bee freaking out !
A life raft made out of bamboo and coconut shells would have saved them.
yes the heavy lead keel makes them almost impossible to tip over but once these kind of sailboats are submerged in water they can sink like rocks. From my understanding most smaller sailboats don't have ballasted keels making much lighter and vulnerable to tip overs but the advantage is they will always stay floating unlike the one you see in the video.
I've read certain sailboats with very heavy lead keels will sink. The heavy keel makes them unable to tip at the sacrafice of sinking. The amount of stryrafoam they would need would take up too much room.
I've never heard of a boat sinking from a heavy keel, in fact it is the keel that keeps the sailboat upright and from flipping over and what rights a boat that has flipped over. Poor maintaince, lack of cockpit drains or clogged drains, not properly closing openings and bilge pumps not functioning for a number of reasons are probably why this boat sank.
Well, wood floats, but wooden boats can still go down.
The best you can do is fiberglass and foam, which lots of speedboats are made of. When sunk, they'll float just under the water's surface, rather than go all the way to the bottom.
Looks like this yacht was anchored or on a mooring, and by the time the recording had started had already shipped a lot of water. Pity to see a classic boat like that paying a visit to her mooring block.
It's realy sad to see an old yacht like this go down and break up. All yachts come to an end and this may be as good a way as any. At least she didn't end her days in some back water just rotting away.
I was in a close situation like that leaving Newport Beach. The curent just 6 feet below the water level will drag a sail boat or any boat with a keel yet a power boat will not be effected. My advise is stay in the mid channel and let all the jet skis, kayaks and power boats go around you, even if your running under power. (P.S. dont let the dumb ass's comment who has never stepped foot on a boat never less sailed one, get you down.) LCDR Paull
I think they tried to anchor. The family that took these pics and are in them on the beach are wonderful people that just happened to live on this beach. They just witnessed it happening, filmed it and called authorities.
A large boat sank today 10.7.09. I was out bodyboarding 2-4 ft. at CDM today and out of nowhere a flotilla of rescue craft appeared but the boat was a total loss thrashed against the jetty.
I'd say good example of just what to do. Stand back and watch it sink from a safe distance.
exon12 - Generally the coasties won't rescue a boat unless it is causing a hazard to navigation or endangering people. They leave it to be salvaged later, as they should as they are putting themselves in danger to try to rescue the property. While this is a nice boat(?), it's not worth anyone getting hurt over.
It looks like the owner anchored it there and then left it. That's why you need to have Vessel Assist my fellow sailors! They would have gotten that boat safely outta there!

Seems especially sad when it is a classic. Something new can at least be replaced with insurance, but an old timer like this is more irreplaceable, even though the dollar value isn't as high.
Many older boats aren't insured, hopefully this was.
It's too bad the capt. did not have the forsight to leave a small sail or makeshift something off the backstay to keep the bow into weather. would have kept the yacht from being rolled about the way it is. Basically pretent it is at sea anchor.
The inlet is the entrance to Newport Beach harbor in California. Looking at the video, you can see that the weather is pretty bad, and the entrance into the harbor can be hairy in bad weather. It appears to be an old wooden boat; probably no motor and entering the harbor under sail in that kind of weather would not be a smart move. The captain probably anchored and abandoned ship hoping the anchor would hold until after the storm blew through.
So they couldn't try and paddle or something past the break?

Why don't they make boats out of material that floats??
Hipster420 2 years ago
because inflatable material can pop easily
MERH1122 2 years ago
I didn't say inflatable.. I said material that floats..There's many kinds of material that float...they even make cement that floats.
Hipster420 2 years ago
because even if they did sometimes the weight of the water is too much to keep it a float.
