  • So they couldn't try and paddle or something past the break?

  • That sucks. I hate seeing beautiful boats end up like that.

  • Was that only a three hour tour?

  • If this is really cdm the entrance to the harbor is on the other side of the jetty!

  • @johnchang7 lol its anchored right off big c and shot from my house

  • Sad to see a boat end this way,

  • Up periscope,

I ain't no sailor but even I would of steered the pointy end towards the shore , must be an insurance job, Check the crew out they carn't believe their luck they are alive, guess they will use the insurance to buy a motor home and go hand feed Grisly bears next.

  • @realbudgiesmuggler I can tell you are no sailor. Going into the shore is the last thing you want to do with a boat. It is proverbial that it's not the sea which is dangerous; it's the hard things all around it. This vessel seems to have dragged its anchor until it went so closely ashore it was in the surf. That's where the water is so shallow the waves break. The breaking waves lifted the boat up and down until the keel struck the bottom and the bottom ripped out . That's when she sank.

  • Aooga Aooga , dive , dive

  • I hope their insurance was paid up!

  • thats not funny :( !

  • Actually no boat can take those kind of conditions if it is just sitting and not underway. Violent looking waves for sure! Cool video! Another situation where I hope the people had good insurance coverage.

  • SHIT that's awesome. i mean, great video. not awesome for the sucka that lost their boat

  • Gilligan would have saved this boat . He was skinny but fast and the fat ''skipper'' would have just screwed things up. NOW the ''professer'' would have wasted the time with his coconut calculator.

Mary Ann and the rest............would just bee freaking out !

A life raft made out of bamboo and coconut shells would have saved them.

  • @linoleumcarving I HOPE SOMEONE GRABBED THE "HEART OF THE OCEAN STONE" BEFORE THIS BOAT SANK....... WHERE WAS JACK DAWSON WHEN THIS WAS HAPPENING!!!

  • yes the heavy lead keel makes them almost impossible to tip over but once these kind of sailboats are submerged in water they can sink like rocks. From my understanding most smaller sailboats don't have ballasted keels making much lighter and vulnerable to tip overs but the advantage is they will always stay floating unlike the one you see in the video.

  • I've read certain sailboats with very heavy lead keels will sink. The heavy keel makes them unable to tip at the sacrafice of sinking. The amount of stryrafoam they would need would take up too much room.

  • I've never heard of a boat sinking from a heavy keel, in fact it is the keel that keeps the sailboat upright and from flipping over and what rights a boat that has flipped over. Poor maintaince, lack of cockpit drains or clogged drains, not properly closing openings and bilge pumps not functioning for a number of reasons are probably why this boat sank.

  • negativo. this video rocks.

  • how come this isn't designed not to sink? the water went into a big hole in the top of the boat. Looks pretty simple to keep it floating.

  • if the boat wasn't tied down it would likely be washed up or thrown against the rocks.....I think it was just a bit doomed =/

  • lol i would have soo taken that 5mph buoy home... for some reason iv always wanted 1 :P

  • this boat is at anchor or mooring. she would have been ok if not tied down. sad.

  • I don't see Jack Sparrow...

  • So sad...that looks like it was a very nice boat.

  • OMG! what a waste!

  • Why don't they make boats out of material that floats??

  • because inflatable material can pop easily

  • I didn't say inflatable.. I said material that floats..There's many kinds of material that float...they even make cement that floats.

  • because even if they did sometimes the weight of the water is too much to keep it a float.

  • Well, wood floats, but wooden boats can still go down.

The best you can do is fiberglass and foam, which lots of speedboats are made of. When sunk, they'll float just under the water's surface, rather than go all the way to the bottom.

  • but they're not strong and they're terrible for durability, foam breaks down from heat and UV quickly

  • Ive been there and never knew a boat sank there. Very sad to see a new boat sink

  • :( this breaked me heart!

  • mine too

  • If there had been a full crew they could have started the bailing bilges and sailed her to safe harbor. Why did they abandon her?

  • That breaking wave at :48 did it for the boat. Sad.

  • that sucks

I hope that never happens to my

    friend and my sailboat

  • Funny how just watching it can make one feel the loss so much..

  • Looks like this yacht was anchored or on a mooring, and by the time the recording had started had already shipped a lot of water. Pity to see a classic boat like that paying a visit to her mooring block.

  • that is really sad i would hate for that to be my boat.

  • It's realy sad to see an old yacht like this go down and break up. All yachts come to an end and this may be as good a way as any. At least she didn't end her days in some back water just rotting away.

  • Just a heads up; look at the chop on the water. No time for a pleasure craft. JP

  • I was in a close situation like that leaving Newport Beach. The curent just 6 feet below the water level will drag a sail boat or any boat with a keel yet a power boat will not be effected. My advise is stay in the mid channel and let all the jet skis, kayaks and power boats go around you, even if your running under power. (P.S. dont let the dumb ass's comment who has never stepped foot on a boat never less sailed one, get you down.) LCDR Paull

  • I hate jet ski's that zip past you when ur trying to sail!

  • I think they tried to anchor. The family that took these pics and are in them on the beach are wonderful people that just happened to live on this beach. They just witnessed it happening, filmed it and called authorities.

  • A large boat sank today 10.7.09. I was out bodyboarding 2-4 ft. at CDM today and out of nowhere a flotilla of rescue craft appeared but the boat was a total loss thrashed against the jetty.

  • i remember that

  • whatever happened a beautiful boat is no more!

  • Maybe the owner wanted it sink? Slip payment mayhave drove him to do it.....

  • Good example of what NOT to do.

  • Bababooey

  • A great example of why morons should not own boats.

  • Why the heck did this guy not go into the harbor? This is Newport right? If he didn't have a motor, couldn't the Coasties tow it in?

  • I'd say good example of just what to do. Stand back and watch it sink from a safe distance.

exon12 - Generally the coasties won't rescue a boat unless it is causing a hazard to navigation or endangering people. They leave it to be salvaged later, as they should as they are putting themselves in danger to try to rescue the property. While this is a nice boat(?), it's not worth anyone getting hurt over.

  • that stinks

  • ...that sinks...lol

  • that stinks

  • WOW that sucks!

  • It looks like the owner anchored it there and then left it. That's why you need to have Vessel Assist my fellow sailors! They would have gotten that boat safely outta there!

  • arrrrrggg... I hope there was no rum aboard... yarharhar...harhar..

  • Heartbreaking to see such a beautiful boat meet it's end this way,but it looks as though nobody was aboard or hurt

  • Sad to watch

  • I could have used the F'ing rigging off that boat...find the captain!

  • That just made a grown man weep! It's sad to watch such a thing of beauty go to the bottom.

  • tis a sad thing mates

  • Nightmare of every kaptain.

  • does any one know if that wo a yankee 30?

  • yikes! what happend why didnt they try putting a sail up or call sombody?

  • I don't think the crew was aboard when she went down.

  • this is very sad wacthing same one pride joy going to the bottom of the sea.

  • Just goes to show you, there is NO substitute for top quality ground tackle and really long scope!

  • There is NO substitute for top quality ground tackle and a 10-to-1 scope!

  • Wow...that totally sucks!

  • i remember that

  • one can see how quickly it can happen. sad and also scary. looked like a sweet little boat too.

  • Ha i filmed this from my house. Where you filming from your car?

  • did anyone get hurt??

  • BEAUTIFUL!

  • Seems especially sad when it is a classic. Something new can at least be replaced with insurance, but an old timer like this is more irreplaceable, even though the dollar value isn't as high.

Many older boats aren't insured, hopefully this was.

  • does insurance cover this .anyone know?

  • how sad

  • Where are the pictures from?

  • Sad

  • That's sad. Sailboats are supposed to be for fun times.

  • It's too bad the capt. did not have the forsight to leave a small sail or makeshift something off the backstay to keep the bow into weather. would have kept the yacht from being rolled about the way it is. Basically pretent it is at sea anchor.

  • The inlet is the entrance to Newport Beach harbor in California. Looking at the video, you can see that the weather is pretty bad, and the entrance into the harbor can be hairy in bad weather. It appears to be an old wooden boat; probably no motor and entering the harbor under sail in that kind of weather would not be a smart move. The captain probably anchored and abandoned ship hoping the anchor would hold until after the storm blew through.

  • looked like a nice little sloop. a real shame.

  • :P XD

  • nice boat.... nice wreck now

  • why are they laughing? They ruined the beach!!! They should be more careful next time! WHAT STUPID PEOPLE!!!

  • someone tied it on the rocks i see but do not understand why they laughing its such a lovely boat!!

  • Man that would suck. Looks like it's dragging it's anchor. Or the last shot of the bouy might tell us that some one tied up to it...

  • Oh man. What a shame. :-(

  • What a shame.

  • ;-(

  • i guess they were drunk ! it's a shame

  • Did they anchor it in the inlet?
