  • I'm with you on Old Gowerie, but I suspect Hal o the wynd my be even nicer. Blackwoods was too much 'Ketchup and vinegar' for me. FVF never hit the my spot, I much preferred Golden Glow, milder and sweeter. Good reviews, good to see you again PP. dub.

  • Holy crap you still like the Giants? hahaha just kidding. Good to see ya back man.

    That Blackwoods is good stuff.

    All the best,

    Jay

  • @dighsx Hi Jay, yes, still loving them Giants (despite a horrible 2011).

Yes, Blackwoods is so good! I just tried some Christmas Cheer 2010 which is almost just as good in my opinion. McClelland does the best Virginias!

    Hope you're good!

  • How the Hell did it take me 6 days to see you made another video?? Awesome to see you again buddy and I am loving the poet-esque facial furr.

You know I am always down to swap Blackwoods for a certain Danish virginia flake you know too well.

    Be well my friend.

    Ben.

  • Good to see you again! -Matthew

  • Arko! Great to see you again my friend! Your Top 5 List from last year, as we talked about, was my awakening to Virginias and what I now LOVE in tobacco. Off your list, Marlin Flake, Old Gowrie are probably my top 2 favorites. FVF would be in there if I could get it, but have only been able to get 1 tin, ever... Capstan is the only one from last year that I have yet to try, and would love to get!!! I'm glad to see you are well, Congrats on the great job! Sending you a PM!

  • Aaahhh..the sound from Fallout 3 again...i love this game ;-))

I prefer the FV Plug.. a Dream !

All the best for you and your wife, Mate !

    HaJo

  • @SirJohnDoe100 Oh, yes, Fallout! Best game I've ever played through - twice!

FV Plug, eh? THAT sounds very, very interesting. I actually know that it is available in plug version, but I always seem to forget. Gotta get that some day.

    Hope you're good!

  • Very pleasant surprise seeing a Pipepoet vid in the queue today. Think I did the same thing with my love for photography turning it into a job. Ever since I've gone in it full time the last thing I seem to want to do is shoot or work on images. Some great baccy's there! I enjoy the FVF very much and the BlackWoods Flake is high on the list to get. Just had my first bowl of McClellands 2010 Christmas Cheer and what a great smoke it was! Beautiful bing pipe there too! Merry Christmas Arko.

    James

  • @astroman2112 Christmas Cheer, huh? Been wanting one of those for a long time. Straight Virginia, is it not?

Good to hear from you, my friend! Hope you're good and all.

    Arko

  • @Pipepoet I believe it is a straight Va. Mostly reds. I know it changes from year to year as they use a different crop. This 2010 is my first experience with the CC series. This one is cut flakes in about 10cmx20cm. I do have several tins of McCrannies Red Ribbon 2008 a pure Va from one single crop! Its tinned by McClellands for McCrannies Tobacconist so it has the ketchupy smell but a real delight. Very popular with some of the American artisanal pipe carvers. Happy to send some on if you wish.

  • First of all: it's a rare pleasure to see you again. You're as classy and insightful as ever, it's as if you've never left.

Do I know what you mean! When I got my first job as a bookstore manager and spent my entire days surrounded with stacks of books, reading about new releases and planning each month's orders - and as much as I do revere the format - I sometimes wouldn't even want to hear about them by the end of the day.

Thanks for the recommendations: I'll take B.W. over FVF any day!

  • @DailyPuffer Thank you so very much, Bruno! That's very nice of you to say -- and I can only send the compliments right back at you.

Oh, the book thing! Yes, I've suffered from that too. Worked in a bookshop a couple of years ago. I guess we just have to find work that does not appeal to us at all! Garbage man, perhaps?

    See you around, my friend.

    Arko

  • Hello Poet! maybe i try Astley´s 44..Nr:99 are my best smoking tobacco right now.

    Take care.

    Olle

  • Nice to see you. Hope you'll share more of the shop with us.

  • Great to see you again Arko. Likewise I have not had the time to make any videos this year. I smoke a lot of FVF but have my first tin of Blackwoods just about to open, so I am looking forward to it. the first few tins of FVF I ever bought were quite bright and I didn't get on with them I think they had some quality control issues. When I was sent a sample of bulk from the USA I saw how dark it was and stuck with it. Luckily the later tins have had darker flakes. Merry Christmas friend.

    Alan

  • @SpainPipe Hi Alan, thanks for dropping by! Oh, I think you'll like the Blackwoods Flake!

    - Arko

  • @Pipepoet Smoking my first bowl right now! Very tasty stuff.

  • hey there my friend! glad to see you here again....please keep the vids rolling.....

  • Great to see you back my friend! You have been missed by many! Take care Arko!

    Cheers!

    -Andre

  • Thanks for appearing to us. Didn't realize how much I missed you until now! And those Ink Spots brought back good memories of when I was younger. Merry Christmas, Arko, and a very good new year of more pipes and tobaccos. Fidele

  • @fidelefool Hi Fidele! Aww, I missed you too ...

I hope you're good and that you'll have some wonderful Christmas days.

    See you,

    Arko

  • Det gør vi

  • What a pleasure to hear from you again! Completely understand the perils of turning a cherished hobby into a job. Thanks for mentioning the Astley's, I'll try to find some. As for the others, agree completely. Merry Christmas, and thank you for making mine a bit brighter!

  • @harjoeric Ah, thanks for dropping by, old pal!

Yes, turning a hobby into a job ... it has its downsides, I guess. But again, it's a luxury problem, I really shouldn't complain. And I'm not.

Go for the Astley's, I would love to hear your thoughts on it. It's always very interesting getting the perspective of a sharp taster like you.

    See you around!

    Arko

  • Really missed you...

  • @dgeorganos Aww, that's mighy nice of you to say! Thanks!

  • Good to see you back. How does the Astley's dark VA compare to Marlin Flake? Cheers.

  • @GothamCitySmoker Thanks!

Well, it's a different beast. The No. 44 isn't nearly as sweet as MF (probably because of the lack of unflavored Cavendish), and it's quite a bit stronger. But I'd actually say that MF is somewhat 'rounder' in taste while the no. 44 is a tad sharper. I'd also say it's a must-try for a guy like you ... should fit your preferences pretty good, I think.

    Good to hear from you!

    Arko

  • Hello Arko. I've never paid much attention to Astley's tobaccos but will see if I can get that one in my next order from Germany. I've had several tins of FVF and although it all started with a bad tasting first one and several reasonable others, I'm now converted and finally taking the best flavours out of it. I prefer to have it folded and very dry, in a small pipe.

Also a big fan of Blackwoods. Get some McC #24 if you have the chance.

    Really nice video.

    Cheers

    G.

  • @RequiemPipes Hey G.! Yes, the FVF took some 'practice' for me too. The first couple of bowls were actually quite bad. Took me a while to figure out the perfect moist level. But then! Oh, man! That's some tasty leaf!

Yeah, see if you can fetch a no. 44 somewhere. I think you'd like it.

And hey, good to hear from you, my friend. How's that Comoy's working out for you?

    Arko

  • @Pipepoet The Comoy's was returned to my wife and is still a virgin. It's currently dressed in Christmas wrapper and a ribbon inside a Hardcastle box I am eager to undress it and give it a go in Chistmas Eve.

  • Good to see you on the tube again

  • @TheRolfiden Tak, Rolf! Vi ses.

  • Great top three and great descriptions of them, which were making me salivate a bit.

    Cheers!

  • @pipethought Watch your keyboard! We don't want to break it! ;)

  • Yes yes yes great to see you again buddy.Excellent 3 tobaccos you picked, and i will stop by the shop in the next week or two.

  • @Pipescratch Cool, Marc! I'm there Monday to Thursday next week. We close a 18 every day by the way ... busy Christmas, you know ;)

    See you, friend!

  • we missed you pipepoet ! welcome back !

  • @FallIntoWinterr Kind of you to say! Thanks!

  • Yes! I exclaimed out loud (scared the wife) when you showed your Stanwell and then showed you were smoking Old Gowrie! That's exactly what I would have paired with that pipe! OG is my favorite 'baccy right now...can't get enough! Gotta get one of those pipes....love that shape. SO glad to see you back....

    Ken =)

  • @Charredbriar Thanks, Ken! Yup, the Old Gowrie is a nice one. But in my opinion it's best if the tin is popped and then sits for a couple of weeks before I dig in. Sometimes it can be a bit too 'green' tasting if smoked right away. Of course, that's just my experience ;)

  • Hey!

Nice to see you back again in action! :))

Your job sounds very good. I understand that you're tired when back from work and after talking such a lot about pipes and tobaccos. Please always keep in mind that YouTube is just a hobby and never a must-do! I'm glad that you have found a couple of minutes for us.

    Merry Christmas!!!

    Cheers

    Lars

  • @larshermanns Thanks, Lars! Yes, it's a hobby, of course, you're right. It's not like I felt like a bad person for not doing videos, but I felt that an explanation was at least in order.

    Hope your good!

  • @hampshirepipe Thank you very much! I'm glad that you learn something from my rambles ;)

Don't worry, it wont be my last video ever, I'm sure.

You have a merry Christmas too!

    Arko

  • very nice pipe my friend

you are a great part of this community

    great choice of tobacco

    have a great christmas

    keep em smoking

  • @dunhillmanuk Ah, good Dunhillman! Good that you're still around. And thank you for the kind words, my friend.

    Merry Christmas to you to

  • Too much of a good thing as they say.. Well I've tried none of those mate but your expert reviews make me want to. I think I'm going to have to ask Jens to pop in and pick me up some of the Astley's. It's very nice to see you again and I wish you and yours a very happy Christmas. Cheers, Tim

  • @Milverton68 Tim! Good to hear from you. Yes, too much of a good thing ... I do have other interests too that need some attention once in while, hehe. But, as I said, a luxury problem, I suppose. Shouldn't complain.

Great idea to have Jens drop by. It's been several months since the last time I saw the good guy. Plus, I think you'd like the no. 44. But I wonder if it's available in the UK?

You have a wonderful Christmas too, friend.

    Arko

  • mayby a will come and visit the pipe shop you work in on Mars and take a lock whot you have :) intressting to buy the gandolf pipe

  • @BalisoZero Do that, yes. About the Gandalf (or any of the LOTR pipes). They're made by Vauen in Germany but their license will end this year, so they wont be making them anymore. But since they are fairly popular we bought a bunch of them. I can't remember how many we have left -- but I remember that we don't have too many of the Gandalf pipe. It sells quickly. I guess there's a lot of wizards out there ;)
