Ben Vareen has some bad ass moves here. An early piece for him with Bob F. The physical isolation movement, and the most amazing part of that leading dancer is her use of her arms. So fluid!
These dances are so awesome.!! The music sounds very "austin powers" like. But a lot of the moves look like the ones done by beyonce and Michael jackson. But this movie is older than them
Hey it all makes since! Michael Jackson copied Fosse's work! Oh wow! Great clip my school is doing this show this weekend, all the high schoolers are pro actors dancers and singers so it looks great!
@Mathiilde3 i think it's possible you may have seen those boxing hands in ausin powers, not sure which one but i'm sure tha'ts what youre talking about.
@Mathiilde3 also, if you've ever seen the movie "Bring it On" -- the toros watch this scene for inspiration for their final routine and replicate the boxing moves done at 3:20 and 3:29
Stop! Stop, stop, stop! No more arguing! Everyone who likes the dancing sit back and watch the pretty video and everyone who doesn't, leave. There, problem solved.
@AmyCraXzzzY I don't like your opinions half as much as I hate your appalling grasp of grammar. Suck my balls, you moronic fragment of cretinous phlegm.
@AmyCraXzzzY Well, you obviously care enough to keep responding. :-) One question, do you kiss your mother with that mouth? Probably... And your daddy too, I'll bet. Shouldn't you be fucking around on a Glee video, or getting humped by the neighbourhood tramps? Fuck you and yours, Cunthook.
@Tigerlily21 - Tiger - I apologize - I spoke on a more global scale. You are more than correct that Coco created the Little Black Dress - but it was this movie and Edith Head that made it the mainstay for housewives across America. Remember that most of their fashion sense came from the movies and stars (at least, up through the mid- 70's) and the forefront of that movement was Edith Head.
I didn't mean to diminish Coco - only show the distribution of her design.
This girl gets the fluid hand movements down perfectly. I've seen other people do it after and it just wasn't as great because there's something about that white gloved hand doing those movements fluidly that gives the choreography its shape.
Notice the brilliance of Edith Head (Costume Designer) in this number - her designs here pioneered the "Little Black Dress" so common today and she showed her talent in this number - every woman is dressed in the exact same little black dress with subtle differences - some are scalloped, some with rhinestones, sometimes with gloves, some with hair... but all the same dress. Brilliance in black!
My school is doing our production of Sweet Charity, and I'm really looking forward to doing this dance! It's still in progress, but WOW is it going well!
I wish I could find a recording of THIS VERSION OF RMF only! I can only find the original Verdon Cast recording (too fast), the Fosse recording (too current and not as cool as this one) and the revival of SC cast recording (also too current). Also, none of them have the 3 dance segments. UGH! I wish I could just find a video of this and download it. :(
@dash1dash2 that's racist :/ and @chilvari obviously you havent listened to the actually good artists of this generation like florence and the machine, regina spektor, cee lo green, colby callait, jason mraz, stornoway, jack johnson, lily allen, etc. music from years ago is better, but you can't make an assumption that all music created now is trash, because it is far from it

Ahh, I see the Gwen Verdon dancing sequence isn't the only Bob Fosse choreographed performance dear old Beyonce got her music video ideas from. [I can't get enough of this video btw, thanks for posting!]
It's a real shame that most people these days don't even know the origins of music, dance and fashion (and they don't bother to find out). They make make fun of the old trends and the older generations but follow religiously and blindly the new generations. Everything and every artist is complete garbage these days yet people think it's original, inspiring and amazing. Not to mention, they all glorify sex, violence and vulgarity. People were actually classy during the golden years.
@chilvari "Everything and every artist is complete garbage these days." Well that's a gross overgeneralization if I've ever heard one. EVERY single artists and EVERY SINGLE THING is complete garbage these days? Someone's bitter.
@KobraCola I stick by most of what I posted but I did exaggerate on the part you mentioned. My views on that have changed since a year ago. Btw, it wasn't bitterness, it was passion. Sometimes people get a bit heated when speaking or posting about something, especially when they come across haters.
@chilvari That's fair, definitely was an exaggeration, didn't check when your original comment was posted either. Passion is definitely not a bad thing. FWIW, I experienced almost the exact opposite when I was growing up. I felt like all of my friends went on about The Beatles or The Rolling Stones or all of these great older bands and it was always an uphill struggle for me to convince them that there was greatness in some bands producing in the current era.
@KobraCola So they had too much passion? I can definetly relate. I had this thing growing up where I would jump from one pop star to the next and just obsess about them. It finally ended after I got over my obsession with lady gaga last year. And I even went through this phase when I was 16-17 where I wanted to be Asian O.o I finally got a grip on things, especially since I'm growing up (now 21). Sometimes, I feel quite embarrased at my behavior growing up but at least I'm over it :)
@chilvari Well, if anything, I would say *I* had too much passion as opposed to them. Not to slight their music tastes, but it seems easier to like The Beatles or The Stones casually than passionately argue for current bands whose legacy in the world of music is much more in flux. And I feel like everyone has been embarrassed about their behavior growing up; at least at SOME point in their adolescent phase they did SOMEthing stupid.
This is brilliant! I saw this movie for the first time today when it came on retroplex (tcm; turner classic movies). The music and dancer numbers are genius! People don't do dance, music and fashion like they did during the classical era of Hollywood cinema and Broadway. And everyone these days almost always reference classic styles in their music or videos (Beyonce did some of these dance moves in a few of her videos; Madonna copied Marilyn Monroe; everyone else basically copies Madonna).
dance is wonderful. music is awful-was bad even for the time with what was happening in jazz and rock and even pop. never makes up its mind. has that 'tv soundtrack' sound. the lead dancer is great. others of course too.
I love Sweet Charity and the 60's! A lot of present day kids think this is silly, but I see a lot of them copying this "Retro" style. We had a lot of fun back then! (And I was only a kid).
I've always loved this part of Sweet Charity, especially "The Aloof". I can see why Beyonce wanted to do someting like this for a music video. The whole thing is awesome, and it introduces young people to Fosse, I bet a whole lot of kids looked this up after they saw Beyonce's video.
