You breathe it in, then breathe it out as far as I know.

Where with regular air, you're body "uses" the oxygen and breathes out the argon nitrogen etc.

So, with helium, it's just like holding your breath. But since you're taking in a gas, your body thinks it's air and your brain doesn't tell you "Get some oxygen!" so you get lightheaded.

Just my theory.
