In the heart of all animals, there are special cells that conduct electrical impulses: if those cells are not being kick-started to get electrical impulses going, so that the over-all heart could start working, pumping blood, with oxygen, into other cells in the body, the body (in this case the baby) could just stay in stasis &, then, die. The rather & immediate rough shoving by the mother, using her hind leg, got those special cells going & then the baby's heart & lungs took over...

@SREE3 How do humans know to slab the back of a baby when it is born? Elephants are incredibly smart animals. It is no surprise that they know exactly what to do to get their babies breathing.
