I met him outside of Worcester, Mass. auditorium, in I think 1967. The hippie thing was going on, he seemed somewhat out of place, dressed in a suit coat. I am almost sure, he was one of the opening acts for the Byrds that day. That was common at concerts back in the day. Opening acts for rock groups. Were many times, performers from basically the fifties or early sixties. One could see the clock was ticking on them. Gene Pitney was a good singer, for sure.
I grew up listening to this music and Roy Orbison, Frankie Valli and the 4 Seasons, Dion also had similar voice styles they were my favorites. I thought they were better than Elvis if you ask me and he was easy to copy lol so I might be able to do a pretty good voice of Gene if i had a good audio Instrumental track so will have to see what I can do about that. ttfn Neal
@juan58102 you are so right, you will have to wait a long long time before some male vocalist could sing this in the same key and reach that last note, I have heard only one person do it, but that was the one and only Cindi Lauper,
this song to me isnt about losing a partner its how i felt watching my mum pass away, and today is my birthday , 25 years on amd i still cry over the memories this song evokes love and miss u mum xxx
Gene, I almost made it to the end but I wasn't strong enough to make it thru the good bye kiss. I know it may have meant nothing to her, although I may have stood tall, but I just couldn't pretend that I didn't care. I still miss her.
this is one of his many songs that really hits the heart and means a lot ...you can feel his feelings when he sings and what his words mean.....it has been my theme song on this path that i am on now and has givin me the guts to change what should have been changed a long time ago....Bless Him
@47yesican Just remember he didn't write it and when he sung it, he was at the top of his game. It was the rest of us going through the heartache of being a teen lol
For all that have "Loved and Lost"..........this is a true heartbreaker!!! No one sang about love and hurt better than Gene Pitney~~ He left us waaaaay too soon. RIP Gene
this song - among all of Gene Pitney's great vocal classics - shows what a magnificent voice he possessed. when he hits those last few notes it still gives me goose-bumps. great song by a great singer.
I know this is meant for a romantic song, but there are other times in life when someone else may walk out, and you watch him leave, knowing you have unconditional Mother's love........but he walks away, out of your life and you have to accept it or lose your mind. Maybe someday............................
Wow, I had never heard Gene's original, I have this by Cyndi Lauper and shared it on facebook, one of my friends told me about this. Fantastic lyrics, gets to my heart; and a good tune will survive a good incarnation! Lauper's version is awesome in it's own right (same as I love her version of the Big O's 'I drove all night) great to hear a female's different take on it (and from a different era)... :)
Love this song. Loved Gene - he was one of my pinups in the sixties. He died days before I was going to see him for the first time live in Glasgow. I was heartbroken. Going to see Neil Diamond in Glasgow in July. Please Neil keep taking your vitamins till then!!
Great song, i mean i just love it and genes voice (god rest his talented soul) but i think this must be one of the shortest hit songs ever .... shame as more of it would have been so much better
Brilliant and breathtaking -- everything Gene did was remarkable, but this song was the best of the best. Only Roy Orbison could match his vocal power, passion, and range. I miss them both with all my heart -- but I have no doubt that Gene and Roy are now singing epic duets in Heaven, making the constellations tremble.
NO one should have that much talent, it's just not fair. If I didn't love him so much I would slap him silly for being so gifted. How dare he be THAT good?
this is just awesome and amazing in every sense of the words of awesome and amazing...thanks for posting one of the most amazing videos of all time

Brilliant voice, one of a kind. I only had the privilege of seeing him once when he came out to Australia. Was so sad when he passed.
