One delightful aspect of Tchaikovsky's "Nutcracker" is it's adaptability to scores simplified for high school bands. I was first introduced to Tchaikovsky in my high school band and we were able to play music from the "Nutcracker" at our level of ability and make it sound at least somewhat enjoyable. I also developed a fondness for Spanish rhythms from the composition "Amparito Roca" by Jaime Texidor, another good tune for high school bands.
I always found it interesting that Tchaikovsky had to compose the music to match the choreography already in place. Of course, it's still great music!

The original had no Sugar Plum Fairy or Kingdom of Sweets. Well anyway the story will give you a better appreciation for Tchaikovsky's interpretation.

No, The Nutcracker was used in "Fantasia" and for this segment, the movie had little dancing mushrooms dance to the song. The Mushrooms looked kinda like little people, hence "Mushroom people".
