I like your perspective on "self suffenciancy" if it all goes bad you are never going to survive without a relationship with the people around you. either you are able to help and interact with your neighbors, or you will have a lot of enemies to fight off!
@Mossy500A You mean you make it out of components that you have stored? That's not what he's talking about. I suppose if you collected scrap lead from wheel weights, etc and melted them into new bullets you would be producing something. Just putting the pre-made parts together from storage is what he's trying to explain as NOT self sufficient.
@buckstarchaser I was saying that I am at a starting point. One could also argue that I go mine my own lead ore and make smokeless powder from scratch. It would be cool to do this, but at the same time it would require a lot of time and energy. It's important that we are able to find a point at which we are comfortable with, while also seeing if that point can be challenged.
myself and a lady friend of mine have been talking about starting our own farm/homestead to become self sufficient. i want to get to a point where i wont need a 6am to 3:30pm mil contract job, i just want to work on my family farm and be left alone! i would pay my taxes from what i grow and sell to a local mom&pop store or something like that
okay, you me and Ayn Rand would get on just fine. To be fair, my wife and I as a team can be self-sufficient off the gird. We have the skill sets. We have hundreds of skills each and they are complimentary. Still the world is too complex, for that to allow us to be free of others. And I wouldn't want to be. Survival is a team sport. I have basic , mid, and advanced skills in all things survival, but without others? what would be the point?
The main skill people should have is learning how to produce food. Food is the the #1 barter item and #1 skill anyone can have in a survival situation. Some folks like to collect guns, ammo, knives, silver, etc. But you can't eat those items and when the SHTF people are going to need to be able to produce food in quantity.
@BlightedBaz thats the reason i have chickens and my raised bed garden areas we are hopeing to plant some fruit trees next spring lots of things we can do but its going to be more of groups of people wroking to get things done it will be more like small tribes working for one thing thats to live and thrive
@geraldb4201 Sounds great, don't forget your nuts either. Depending on your zone there are a great variety you can grow, Hickory, hazelnuts. Good protein and good fats.
@BlightedBaz i know of a gew places to pick hazle nuts and beech nuts acorns and even a few grown over apple orchards that are within a 20 min walk from here even a few places to catch fish that are a half hr bike ride from here 5 mins in my suv but i am trying to time on how long it takes to ride a bike that way we have ideas on what we can do in a givin day
So the problem is trying to find like minded people to have as a team when things go ape shit. See I live in Calif... That's my first problem. I do live in rural Cali but, still people are just brain dead on the issues.
The Problem for me is when I talk to people about the current situation in the US, they are oblivious. Oh they kinda know things are "bad" but, they have no idea how bad. They scoff at me when I ask them, well are you prepared. To the person they say "prepared for what"?.. Even when I try to explain(and we all know you can't do it in one sit-down) they think i'm crazy. Oh you just hate obama or are you one of those crazy survivalists.. etc... Sheep..
You absolutely need to produce. I would concentrate on a specific skill or a category of skills that makes you marketable to the "community". Farming, medical and security are good areas. When the SHTF, people will be "picking teams". If your a producer you can be on one of the winning teams. If you are an unmarketable, consumming locust then no one is going to want you on thier team. No team?; then you get to die from starvation or victimization. Having hoes is also a good thing.
Your right right in one way it's really hard for one person to be 100% self sufficient BUT a group of people could very easily tribes in Africa been doing it for ever and still do it today but I get what your saying
