but when i slap a string, i either bounce my thumb right off or i rest it on top of the string (my thumb tip points upwards, should it point in the direction of the string?), how am i meant to get my thumb underneath the string, and on the the way back up do i pluck with my thumbnail or the skin?
what exactly is the technique? is it slapping all the strings with your thumb or the up stroke example with your thumb you showed at the end of the clip? i haven't heard of double thumbing before
@Alexnchains16 The idea is that you strike through the string and then come back up through the string immediately afterwards. Think of it as using your thumb like a plectrum. Victor Wooten is pretty much the master of this technique, so check out some of his tutorials.
Thanks for this vid, I'm starting to get the technique down. The key seems to be to use the tip of your thumb like a pick, rather than the knuckle, which is used for a normal slap. Also, the rotary motion starts to come natural as you get it down. Between you and MarloweDK I've learned so much in the last few weeks. Played straight fingers for years, time to learn something new.
@bananafingerrrs that's great that the vid inspired you. It's a cool little trick to have under your belt for when that very rare bass solo comes about. Check out my vid BL10 too, double thumb/double pop lesson there
@casimer I have same but swamp ash body and antique tobacco oil finish, if interested you can check my only video, tho i recorded it when i had some fever so its not so good ;p
thanks for this vid bro. at first i thought it would be hard to learn so i put it off, i just now picked up my bass and got down most of the techniques in about an hour :D keep posting those vids!
Is there any way you could post a tab of this? I can see what your right hand is doing, but I'm not sure what notes you're playing for the sliding or the double thumping, and the lack of the dots or boxes on your bass makes it that much more difficult to tell.
@Seand412 it's true, no dots are too useful see judging neck position. I'll put tabbing it up on the list! There's some tabs available for some of my other vids too.
I try to keep on practising, I'm only afraid I'm on a wrong way sometimes...ok, but after watching a few videos I think, I'm on the right way. So seems like i just need to practise more;-)
Sir, you have such great tone and technique and I think that I saw a post from you that you can not use some of these techniques in the band that you are in. Don't you find it frustrating & limiting? I am a rock guitarist turned country & blues bassist who absoultly LOVES the funk & slap methods that you do but don't think that I will ever be able to use them except for my own fun!
@garoflex thanks for the comment. I'm no longer playing in that band and looking to put together a funkier group, so yes, I did find it frustrating! You can always try and sneak in a few pops here and there and see what your band mates do!
...and when playing on higher frets it is really hard to get an good pluck sound...because the strings are closer to the neck and its not easy to pluck them...(i belive it's all practice?!9
@Fantasmo81 ...It depends a lot on preference and how your bass is set up. As you say, practice, trial and error, see what works for you. All the best!
Do you rest your thumb after down stroke a little moment on the neck? When playing not near the neck my thumb tends to slip completly through the strigs(which is probably caused by playing not enough near the neck??).Do you hold your thumb parallel to the strings or like pointing directly 2 them?
@Fantasmo81 Hi, sorry I didn't reply before, only just saw this comment. I checked out your pics and then had a look at my own technique. It varies a lot from person to person because of how your hands are put together etc. I have my thumb practically parallel with the strings and strike through to rest on the next string. In this vid, I am playing so there's some contact with the fretboard, but sometimes I play away from the neck entirely...
Damnn! even though i just Figured out Double thumbing about 3 days ago, this showed me the wayy to a more comprehensive wayy of doing soo! Much thanks too Any ann all bassists
this is only a opion but when you make a lesson video you should talk to because all you are doing is visual but you never give a kinestetic or auditory learning which make it very hard to learn off this
@sammemqandil That's fair enough. I speak on another video illustrating the same technique: 'Slap Bass lesson, double thumb/pluck and funk peel-off. Just bought an external mic... so I'll be doing more talky ones soon.
@sammemqandil see... i get more help out of just watching. when they talk i feel as if they just blabber on sometimes about something pointless when i'd rather just watch them do it slow like he did. so i found his video very helpful
@JoyoPrower you could maybe try lighter gauge strings if you're not getting the attack you're after. It also really helps to have as low an action as you can to make this easier to do. Hope you get it sounding right
U got any tabs for that lil ditty? promise i aint gonna steal em im just learning the most technique stuff as possible and i think im pretty close by ear but i can hear somethings not quite right. if u could send me those that would be much appreciated brotha.
What gauge string do you use? I am using mediums maybe medheavy and my thumb always gets caught. I was thinking of switching to super lights (rotosound funkmasters). Think this would help me?
I use standards, mainly because I don't want to lose the rounder tone I like for finger style. It's worth experimenting with different gauges though and if the light strings feel good, then they're right for you. In terms of your thumb getting caught; try reducing the movement of your thumb to the minimum to sound the notes and then build on speed gradually.
you've got to build it up at first, I took the skin off my thumb when I first started doing it. But it soon toughens up. You'll be able to do it, it's just practice, lots of practice.
Take it slow and work on control, that's all it is, control... It took me about 3 years to get my control down to an art, but if you work at it, it will flow like water.
