I DONT CARE...NYC...I WANT TO BECOME AN ARCHITECT CAUSE I WANT TO BE AN ARCHITECT...ppl quit because they dont want it as bad as they think they want it....NOTHING IS IMPOSSIBLE...and at the end of the day it pays off...ill go throiugh anything to become wat i want to become...nothing is putting me down...good video btw...
Im an achitect, love the study but hate it right now, long working hours no free time, should have been something else, anyway can turn time back thou
so i go to aviation hs and we would draw the parts we would make in shop before we actually manufacture them, im not great at drawing but i can draw blueprints and stuff like that
to be an architect do have to know how to draw 3d structures and the actual design or do you just draw the inside like the spars, the measurements ect.
Hello Doug. I have been deeply interested in becoming an architect since I was young. I haven't until recently though wondered if I was cut out to be one. So I have been doing a lot of research including watching most of your videos. You mentioned creativity in the video which I always figured was a requirement, but I'm not really sure if I'm creative enough. Do you know of a way to test one's creative ability. Also is it reasonably possible to improve your creativity.
@123nypd hahahaha dude I hate math. But from a little research I found out that just the basic algebra is needed for architecture. The highest math at the most to study is prolly geometry.
@kev3145 I never was good to math, but was my choose. Sometimes is hard, but I study two times more then others that think easy. But I am excelent for art, history, teory,is many diferent things in one graduation. U cant be good in all hauahaauhauha
Does anyone know if it is difficult to become licensed in a different state in the US?; Do the licensing exams for architecture vary much from state to state. Basically curious if one can end up working in a state other than the one in which they attained their degree. thanks
@selos69 despite seeing that video i think you're wrong because there is no other career that can compare with being able to look at a structure and saying its "yours".
hmm, so is it really hard. Iv been told its easy :( but u are in the USA, im from the UK, but ur really good at this stuff. Serioussly HOW hard is it?
@TheeArabMan Very hard, in fact, a lot of nights without sleep, a lot of homework apart from the classwork. And, as somebody told me onece, can you name ONE millonaire architect? There is no one. It's a beautiful profession, indeed I love it, but it is a very, very, bad business.
@duerre15fan Yes, it is, is very very hard. I don't know how much you have to study in the U.S, but in my country (Ecuador), after finishing school (12 grades) you must do one semester of preparataion and six years of architecture study. It includes: drawing, arts, architectural proyects, mathematics, history of architecture, design, antropology, semiotics, sociology, descriptive geometry, materials, structural design, electric & plumbig, topography, I don't know where I kept all of that.
@aneshization oh really? im really nervous right now. im going to college this june. its 5 yrs in here too. in the philippines =). so what year are you now?
Indeed, it takes a long time to be an Architect..pays so little when you're an intern or just starting out..sigh! I live here in LA and I am working as an Assistant to an Architect.. the plus side about the job is that I get to see beautiful houses (Malibu, Beverly Hills).
To make extra money I have a second job and a 3D modeling/rendering side job..
I'm an architect!, (almost, in a few months...) I'm also low-paid and over-worked, but it is great. I really enjoy to architect, when I enter the university my mind was doubtful, because it wasn't as I imagine, but when I understand the importance, the beauty and the posibilities of the architectural design, it really came to me that it was my calling.
I'm not an architect for the money (of course it matters), i'm more an architect for the art.
Hey, I'm applying to study architecture beginning in September 2011. I'm practically in love with it, although I am totally scared about the money side; there seems to be no intermediary between huge firms, who's partners make small (or extremely large) fortunes, and the employees, who make very little compared to their level of professional expertise. Can anyone confirm of correct this?
That's a one size doesn't fit all statement there my friend. Perhaps you'd like to rephrase that to say all humans find it challenging to live in harmony w/ the earth & architects serve the needs & desires of humans.
thank you Patt for all the good advises and the keeping my moral high when i feel stuck....im currently on my second year of architecture, its a 6 year run here in Columbia ( the country, not the state)..
I'm already an architect, not registered yet, still as Intern at the office for 1 year... sometimes I love it, sometimes I hate it :) But I still have a long path ahead, and maybe one day, I'll get back to the drawing board, rather than only long rendering in 3d... Detail project, and endless meetings with contractors and investors.... Good luck everyone
This isn't aimed at you, it's just to let everyone know:
Not registered = Not an architect.
The word "architect" can only be used by a person who is registered. It doesn't matter how many architectural degrees you have or how long you've been an intern, it's whether you passed the tests. A person who doesn't pass the tests may be very competent, but they can't be called an architect. They also can't do commercial work.
@deezynar Yes, I know about it (and how I know :P ) and I don't feel offended with your comment. I meant that I graduated in Architecture and I'm working and still studying to become (a registered) one. That's all :) I work in Germany though, and here we don't need to sit exams again, we have to through 2 years internship and submit our experiences to the board for consideration.
It sounds like Germany has tighter control over the education of architecture students than the U.S. does. Our federal (federation) form of government wouldn't allow that here in the states.
My comment was aimed only at U.S. readers. I should have explained that, I apologize.
@deezynar my friend in practical and professional terms you're asolutely correct. not registered is not architect. Although Architecture is all about feeling and serve other's needs.from where I come from registration happens automatically the day you reicive you degree. Ipersonally find it convinient but also totally irresponsible as you have no experience but you can approve drawings for buildings.....do not worry for me I study in U.K. so I still have to pass professional exams.
My comment was solely aimed towards those who live in the United States. I have no idea how countries other than the U.S. deal with this issue. I apologize for being so U.S. focused, I often forget how international YouTube is.
This is a good video. Bottom line is be patient, it pays off later on. I am in the beginning stage but I like it. I just think its necessary. And hopefully it gets even better.
Thanks for making these videos, it really encourages me to become an architect.

I like the "old guy" at the end, attempting to hand over the shovel, presumably after figuring out that he'd dug himself a "Hole Too Deep."
I've come to that conclusion about myself too, and I think it's too late to do anything about it.
Still, quite funny. Thanks Doug.
