I can't believe they had just met and perhaps practiced this just once or twice before this performance. It's so tight, harmonies are terrific and the timing is excellent (and that 'arguing' part is quite difficult to carry off, I reckon.
BonginTheOven - I'm also a bit confused by your comment " This is too glamorous". While Anthony and Tim would both look gorgeous in anything they were wearing they are both dressed in casual jeans and shirt/tshirt. Although they sang this amazing song from Rent this was not the musical Rent but a telethon to raise money for a very worthy charity. Anthony and Tim both give a lot of their time and talents to help many charities. I also think they make this song their own. I love it.
I love listening to Anthony & Tim sing this great song together. Their voices are so different but they blend together so beautifully. I wasn't lucky enough to see Rent but I have heard such wonderful things about both Anthony and Tim's performances as Mark and Roger. But this was a performance for a charity telethon show. I thought they were both fantastic. I have seen both Anthony and Tim perform in concerts & musicals and they both smile & interact with their audiences and other performers.
@BongInTheOven I'm a bit bemused by this comment. Two men dressed very causually in jeans too glamorous? Mind you, they both are rather gorgeous. ;)
Perhaps if they were dressed or performed like this in the musical itself, but here they are not in character , they're not meant to be Mark and Rodger here, and the song is being sung in the context of a charity telethon show.
i sung this for my rent play i so owned it i was roger! i love this song my fav part singing is when u have 2 say i dnt own emotion i rent!!!!!!!!!! :]
you know i kind of fell bad for these guys, and anyone else who performs as mark and roger, they have to follow in anthony rapps and adam pascals shadow....... but either way these guys did great!!!!!
I agree it's a shame people seem to think they have to be like Anthony R and Adam - especially when this is a TV charity show before rehearsals even started ! I think the singing is already far better.
i sort of disagree, i dont like these guys better, i dont think that there not as good either.. they were so different from anthony r and adam, that i dont think you can even compare the two groups... thats why i like it.... they made it there own....=)
@06scrappy I do agree with you and think it's a shame people are so tied to the original through the show and the film. So many have commented ignoring the fact that they hadn't even started rehearsing in character. Apart from that, Anthony is a highly trained singer and Anthony R is an actor. I just loved him in the part and it's nice to see someone pointing out that a different style should be possible. So thank you! It's a 'discussion' that's been going on since 2007 lol
@06scrappy That's fair comment . I agree they did make it their own. It appeared to me, and I can only compare these clips with some of Anthony Rapp and Adam pascal as well as the DVD of the film, that these two focused on 'singing' the parts rather like in an opera - and because they are such good singers it really works for them.
It's an entirely different approach to the Broadway or film versions (in my view) which focus on the acting.
r u totally sure bout dat cause de smile on anthonys face when tim comes on stage is kind of a give away dat der is sumting goin on dat smile is so geniue and happy its hard 2 believe dat de were not dating until 2008....
@daisyissexy What language is this? Yes, I'm positive. Anthony smiles at lots of people - men, women, children. But they've both said they started dating in 2008.
they sound really good -.,- but i still kept with Adam Pascal And Anthony Rapp, they sound, more like the characters, and this guys do very good, but well my humble opinion, was that, i love adam and anthony, to me they are the best Roger and Mark (and i've heard other 4 o 5 people performing Roger and Mark...)
I don't know whether you realise but this isn't part of the Rent show and they're not performing in character. It's just them singing one song (before they'd even started rehearsal), on a charity TV telethon. We all like different things and for different reasons so you don't have to be humble lol - I just like the songs really sung well by good voices.
I don't see how you can say these singers don't sound so much like the characters without seeing them in character. Or do you mean they don't sound like Anthony R and Adam? That's what people usually seem to mean and it's a shame - this cast performed the music so beautifully. I didn't like the show until I heard this production. I like music sung really well, not just performed. I know some don't - we all have different tastes, but we do need to have seen something before judging it.
i've seen/hear this song performed by 4 pairs of people, that is why i said that i said, i'm not telling this to the air, i didn't like RENT, and it doesn't matter how i beginning to like it, that is my opinion, and READ, this guys are good, but I LOVE THE MOST Adam And Anthony in no moment i'm saying this 2 guys r bad OK? and i'd say they sound more than the chars, 'cuz to me they give me more the feeling of a jew boy and a former Rock star, so that's my opinion, and i give bases... finito
I'm sorry I offended you and not trying to start a war or change your mind! But until you've seen a performance you can't judge it. I've seen clips of other stars which were completely off-key but I know I can't judge on that basis. I wasn't sure you knew they're just singing before rehearsal started. I'm not sure what a 'jew boy' sounds like/why Anthony R sounds Jewish, but as you say it's your preference, as mine's mine. I saw you liked them - I hope you listen to other songs too.
...hey guys from australia ..since when anthony and tim being a couple?..i heared feb.11.2008?..is that correct?sorry im not updated but im a avid fan of anthony ...im from philippines....
..."coz they are a perfect couple ever they know how to sing and they both have a good looking personality..
...thank you if anyone can answer me i appreciete...
is it Campbell who sings the roger?? anyway, the roger is damn hot and hell yeah he can sing!!!! O_O *_____* WAAAAAAh *runs.threw.a.wall* I LOVE this musical x_X
Apart from the wonderful vocal performance, I really do like the way they interact and appear to enjoy doing what they love, that is, singing and entertaining. I'm sure that would be infectious and the audience could feel it... much like their performance during Carols by Candlelight, 2008.
Gosh. Thanks for your great comment. It's so good to get away from debates about 'who is the best Mark in RENT' and back to comments about this actual performance. They are so dynamic and energetic together, aren't they? And I agree, it's obvious they love singing and entertaining together and that they also like each other very much.
That's right. It's a song from 'Rent' performed by two of the cast, but it's not a rehearsal nor are they in 'character' here. It's for television entertainment. I think they are 'dynamic' in that they give one hundred percent to giving the best performance and that energy comes across clearly. They work well together and I am a sucker for Anthony's full sounding notes, so was so happy to hear them again in this. Thank you!
I don't like his voice for that part. It's not a fixed view of the world, it's a specific view of the part of Mark Cohen.
He would be fantastic in ANOTHER ROLE in another show because he has a greatgreatgreat voice. But my personal opinion is that it does not fit the part.
I can't think of anything in the the writing of the show to say that Mark can't sound like this and do justice to the music as only a musician can. He was described as 'perfect' in the role. It would be interesting to know what your specific view of the part of Mark is?
well....Mark, even in Jonathan Larson's book (not the musical) RENT he describes Mark skinny, Jewish, with a short trimmed beard and with a slightly squeaky yet powerful voice, just like Anthony's
Thanks for explaining. I've never heard Anthony Rapp sound powerful and he doesn't look Jewish, skinny with a short trimmed beard, does he! lol. I'm writing as someone who loves good music, so I think having someone sing properly, totally in tune, shows off Larsen's music far better. The musical seen now isn't what he originally wrote anyway. I prefer more musical interpretations. I know others don't but I'm not going to say their way is wrong - it's just not my taste.
well.... yea, i understand what you mean ( and dont worry, both Angel and Collins where described as white and blond, and they ended up being black and latino :D)
Thanks for your comment that Anthony Callea is a great singer. I appreciate that.
It seems, however, that you think Anthony Rapp is the only person who can do this role. I can understand your viewpoint, but I guess we'll just have to agree to differ on that one.
I see the role as more a musical one than an actor's role and therefore I prefer to hear a singer do the role.
I'm not at all confused - I saw the actual show several times and Anthony Callea was an excellent Mark. They're just singing a song and not singing in character here - it's a TV show for charity before they started rehearsal. I agree about his voice - I loved hearing the music sung so well.
Broadwaybaby, how can you say someone is wrong for a part in a show, when you haven't actually seen that show? It doesn't make sense. As Mairanya said, this is a pre-reheasal TV show.
Seems to me you have a very fixed view of the world.
Wow you guy's are great, my school is doing this in March, and so were practicing right now, i play the character benny in the rent. If you guys get a chance to come check it out , it's at muncie central highschool, on march 12-14 in indiana. Good job again you guys.
If this is what they sounded like before starting rehearsals, I wish I could have seen the show. I read the excellent reviews but just couldn't get there. They sound so good together.
They had apparently just met one another. And this is pre rehearsals for the show. Fantastic powerful version of this song. A great combination of voices
I could listen to the fantastic powerful voice of Anthony forever. He really is the King of Vocals. I also love the blend of the two voices when Tim joins in as well. Great song sung by two talented singers. I love it.
I wasn't lucky enough to see " Rent " but I really love Anthony and Tim singing this great song. I love the relationship between them singing this fantastic song.
Anthony had only just started rehearsals, as well as the rest of the cast, and this isn't in character. I find their voices much easier to listen to then Anthony and Adam.
...and by "better" I meant better than the unrehearsed ones that Rapp and Pascal have done before. The quality of their performances on the OBC CD and the DVD are better than the ones they have done in other places, at least for me.
You were clear but I wasn't, sorry! That was how I read your 'better', so I wasn't reacting to you but to other posts which said Anthony Rapp sings better. I've tried so many clips and the DVD plus CD, but just can't enjoy that performance style. It's completely different, just different tastes.
I'm a purist, so I absolutely love the OBC version with Anthony Rapp (who I got to meet in person when he came to my college) and Adam Pascal, but these two can tear it up, too! If you want to hear a much better rehearsed version of Anthony R and Adam, check out the movie clips on YouTube, the OBC recording, or the movie soundtrack. It's good stuff.
I'm not sure what you mean by purist in this context? I have the OBC CD and tried the DVD, but I call myself a purist too because I like music to be musical, totally in tune. It's a matter of taste for different styles really. I put this up because it was a TV appearance shown only in Western Australia, just before they started rehearsal for Rent. I didn't mean to start a competition, but can't stop myself reacting when there's mention of the 'singing' being better. lol
LOL It's all good, dude. By 'purist' I meant that in this instance I prefer the original interpretation, but this one is a very close second. No competition on my end. :-D
lol. It's good that you accept both. It's interesting how that first production has cemented itself in so many people's minds so they can't. Even a franchised musical like Wicked allows different interpretations of the characters, but maybe that will change too if a film is made. (I'm waiting for people to start wondering why ABBA don't sound like Meryl Streep. lol )
I just love it - I didn't see Rent I really wish I had been fortunate enough to but really love all the great songs from it and Anthony's voice is so great and strong. I really love Anthony and Tim's version.
Saw Rapp and Pascall doing this on an America morning show last week...I have to say that for me, Anthony and Tim were far easier on the ears than Anthony and Adam.
Yes. They missed 'Hallow'een' on the movie, although I've seen it as a separate clip taken in a graveyard, I think.
I noted that Adam R? had a very smooth tenor voice in the movie version, but his live voice is quite rough and a bit discordant in one or two of these clips. Does this mean they have cleaned up the movie soundtrack, do you think?
I have the cast CD so think you may be right but of course they could also do lots of takes and choose all the best bits. have you seen the video clips of this Perth production? There are some up on YouTube. Anthony hadn't done much if any rehearsal with the cast at this stage, so far as I know, as he was in Sydney performing in Dead Man Walking until just before Telethon.
I know that they did this performance virtually straight after Anthony arrived in Perth, so with not much rehearsal time, they were amazing! I thought Anthony was so strong in this performance, holding the lower undercurrent so powerfully to Tim's higher level notes. Tim had to work so hard to match him, but he did brilliantly, I thought.
Tim later said he'd felt intimidated by having to sing with Anthony but I agree he did really well. I saw the show in Bunbury on its second night and then various times in Perth including the last night and Tim's singing developed each time I heard him. I just wished Anthony also had some longer solos with time for applause at the end!
I didn't like the movie for the above reasons. I'd be interested to see how it compares to the stage version. That said, I thought the musical composition was brilliant and the singers were first rate. I still prefer the Anthony Callea/Tim Campbell song shown here because of the sheer musicality of the performance. Their harmonies are so good. The Americans 'talk' the song more and their 'live' performances are not as good as on the movie version. (just my viewpoint)
There's actually nothing in the text of Rent to say their voices have to be raw though - it's just people are used to that. The whole production was really good musically - most were, like Anthony, highly trained singers.
i should've said that their voices arent raw enough FOR ME. nothing against their talents which they do have alot of, ist just that Jonathan larson actually was originally looking for those who were Raw and rough around the edges and not so polished. But still great job for these guys...
lol Thanks for explaining! I'm glad Jonathan Larson's wishes weren't followed in the casting here - I loved the music just sung and played really well.
I find that a strange comment. I have watched the movie 'Rent' and find the characters are basically 'middle-class people' who are living an alternative lifestyle and getting into drugs (and thesubsequent consequences). There is nothing RAW or underbelly about these people. In fact, the story comes across with a smalzy American feel that undermines the seriousness of the subject matter. However, the music and singers are good. Got to say, I prefer Anthony and Tim singing this song any time.
agree - Joanne is a lawyer, Collins a lecturer, Benny a property-owner and the others have middle-class parents. 'Poverty' is relative when you're in their situation. As a student I couldn't afford a phone! I could write a book about the inconsistencies in Rent and the misconceptions that have arisen as a result. However I still loved the show when the music was performed well, as it was in this production.
Well... I think if this were the first time I heard the song, I'd be like, WOW! But I heard the original first.... and my sister was so lucky to see the last showing of the original cast... and I never saw it! Just heard it and saw the movie...
Huh... these guys are like the complete opposites of Pascal and Rapp. Campbell's voice is wavy and breaks at times, while Callea's is smooth and soulful... which is kind of contrary to the characters of Mark and Roger. I hate to sound like a nitpick, but I still think Rapp's Mark is superior despite his generally unschooled voice, because I think it fits the awkward snarkiness of Mark, and likewise Pascal's smooth tenor helps convey Roger's stoic, retrospective manner
I think you make an interesting point, not nit-picking! You realise this isn't in character? It was staged quite differently. I never work out how much the picture of Mark comes from Rent itself and how much from people being used to it performed Anthony Rapp style. Reading it closely, I find Mark's character confusing. Otherwise, I only know Rent through this version and just prefer everything sung well. I haven't yet heard smooth tenor from Adam. This was Tim singing before full rehearsals.
Well put, well put. I think this is a good performance, but after hearing the original to me it's kind of like... eating at your favorite restaurant after it gets a new chef :).
And I heartily encourage you to get the original cast recording. It's amazing.
That's an excellent analogy! I do have the original cast recording, but must say I prefer 'this chef' as for me good singing is more important and I can't listen unless the pitch is true. I'm glad you find this good though.
this is really good.. fantastic. never knew tim had that vocal range brillant. This song is hard to sing for Roger coz he has to hits A's alot.. Reason i know is coz im playing Roger with a comapny doing RENT.
It really is a hard part to sing in lots of ways isn't it and Tim was very good - he got better and better as the run went on. Apart from range he also has a very sweet tone as well as the rock sound. This was before they actually started rehearsal together as Anthony had just finished Dead Man Walking in Sydney. I hope Rent goes very well for you and your company.
That is Anthony Callea. I believe he is completely amazing. I'm glad you think so too! You'll find masses of YouTube clips of him singing - I have a channel full of them for a start.
I was so excited when I saw this on Telethon lol. I had just bought tickets to the actual show and it just made it 10 times more exciting. Looking back, it's a really fantastic performance :)
I prefer the more musical versions of Rent which use true 'singers'. I'm glad you like Tim and Anthony even though it seems you prefer the other style of performance. Thanks for commenting.
Outstanding. Just found Anthony on Youtube tonight..he's magnificant. I LOVE RENT...love the original performers, and saw the stage production here last year that was touring the U.S...they were decent, but I sure wish I could have seen these two perform together....particularily since they're a couple (at least last I could find about them ;) ).
The originals were actors not singers though weren't they. This is far far better singing, but they're not in character and Anthony hadn't actually started rehearsals with the rest of the cast. I know some people seem to prefer that other style of not really 'singing' in the strictly musical sense, but I'm very glad they did it this way.
There's no doubt Anthony is a fine vocalist. Playing Boq in Wicked will be a walk in the park for him from a vocal point of view, am looking forward to see how he goes with the acting side.
I think it's a different style and I prefer the more musical versions like this one so I think they sing far far better. This isn't from the actual show and it was done quite differently when they were in character of course.
I did see a clip of him - the only Broadway Mark I've liked and would have gone to see, as I just don't enjoy the less musical style. I still love Anthony's singing more but I thought Harley seemed excellent. This is not from the actual show and it was performed very differently in character, but I hope you like the singing?
He's great - Halloween was just heartrending. It's OK I didn't think you were dissing Anthony and I really had seen Harley and liked him. Did you see him in the show and have you heard other Anthony songs?
well everyone would think that because the obc is seen as the real character and its someone else playing the role. and i agree with you on everything!
I didn't see Anthony Rapp's performance but I've heard him and Anthony Callea is a far better singer. I know some people don't look for that but it's what's most important for me. There's nothing in the text to say Mark's a nerd. Is Anthony Rapp Jewish?
No he's Christian turned agnostic. I do agree that Anthony C has a better voice but only because he has the voice of a recording artist whilst Anthony R has the voice and the acting skills of a proper Broadway performer, so they're very different. Nobody can ever beat the original, but Anthony C did come very, very close.
I thought he wasn't! I know how popular the Broadway style is - I just prefer more musical performances. But I'm glad you thought Anthony was good - I know people find Anthony Rapp a hard act to follow and this wasn't in context either. It was performed very differently on stage.
There's nothing here to show Anthony's acting skills as they're just singing in a charity TV show before rehearsals started. While he does record, he is, more than anything, a superb live singer. He won a Mo award after his first tour. I think he'd make a 'proper Broadway performer' too. lol
It would be interesting to hear him sing Roger's songs, wouldn't it! Why do so many people feel Mark can't be goodlooking? There's nothing in the text to say he isn't and he had Maureen as a girlfriend. She is supposed to be very attractive to both sexes.
haha, I see your point. Maybe its because the OBC's mark, anthony rapp, isnt very attractive and we all expect every person who plays mark should look like the orginal person who played the role, kind of nerdy and bohemian looking.
I'm no expert on Rent, but that's how it seems to me - that Anthony Rapp has been so successful people expect Mark to be Anthony Rapp, if you see what I mean. Some people think Anthony R is attractive though, I think? Anthony C's voice is stunning but most people do tend to 'notice' his looks lol.
haha !! i guess so. Thats exactly what I was trying to say about the whole, people expect every person who play mark to look and sound exactly like Anthony Rapp. You worded what I tried to say to make more sense :)
I just hopw Anthony Callea had thick glasses, a nerdy hairdo, a striped scarf and plaid jacket because that is what distinguishes Mark the most. But I reckon Anthony Rapp's gorgeous!! In a strange, nerdy kinda way, but he's still hot.
lol I'm happy for Anthony Callea playing Mark to look like Anthony Callea. There's nothing in the text to say he's a nerd. I know lots of people think Anthony Rapp is hot anyway.
lol I keep having this conversation. Jewish? At least he has dark skin and hair. I don't see why Mark should be a nerd - he had a glamorous girlfriend and is vey much part of 'La Vie Boheme'. Do you think it's because people expect Anthony Rapp and Anthony is so different? Thanks for commenting anyway. The production is over now but it really was very good.
I wish they were in costume! but they can't give too much away about the show especially during telethon. Anyway Tims got a great rock voice and I know Anthony Callea can pull off Marks (anthony rapp) spastic dancing for la vie boheme! I'm seeing the final show tomorrow - can't wait.
lol I hope he dances like Anthony Callea acting Mark and not Anthony Rapp. This was before Anthony had started rehearsing with the rest of the cast. I hope you love the show when you see it. This one is stunning and Halloween and his part in Goodbye Love are even better.
I totally agree with u. I saw the final show Lastnight. Anthony was amazing in "Goodbye love". Different than the original Mark but it was all really well done. His singing outdid his acting. Tim Campbell was the best actor of the night. Him and Anthony make a good team.
Thanks for coming back - I was there too for the last night. I loved the way Anthony sang and acted the part. His dramatic solos were just beautiful weren't they! I'm glad you agree.
as much as they're superb singers....they just don't fit the personas of the characters...i've never though i'd say this...but they're too...pretty boy...to be either character!!
I know this is just taste - for me the music is what counts. I didn't know Roger and Mark couldn't be goodlooking. Don't people find the two original actors attractive? The West Australian reviewer thought Anthony Callea was 'perfect as Mark'. This was before they'd started rehearsing and not how the songs are in the show. They're dressed for the Telethon closing ceremony. It's a pity they can't be seen in context - it's really powerful. Thanks for watching and commenting.

That's what people usually seem to mean and it's a shame - this cast performed the music so beautifully. I didn't like the show until I heard this production. I like music sung really well, not just performed. I know some don't - we all have different tastes, but we do need to have seen something before judging it.

i've seen/hear this song performed by 4 pairs of people, that is why i said that i said, i'm not telling this to the air, i didn't like RENT, and it doesn't matter how i beginning to like it, that is my opinion, and READ, this guys are good, but I LOVE THE MOST Adam And Anthony in no moment i'm saying this 2 guys r bad OK? and i'd say they sound more than the chars, 'cuz to me they give me more the feeling of a jew boy and a former Rock star, so that's my opinion, and i give bases... finito
Lyon3ng 2 years ago
I'm sorry I offended you and not trying to start a war or change your mind! But until you've seen a performance you can't judge it. I've seen clips of other stars which were completely off-key but I know I can't judge on that basis. I wasn't sure you knew they're just singing before rehearsal started. I'm not sure what a 'jew boy' sounds like/why Anthony R sounds Jewish, but as you say it's your preference, as mine's mine. I saw you liked them - I hope you listen to other songs too.

Apart from the wonderful vocal performance, I really do like the way they interact and appear to enjoy doing what they love, that is, singing and entertaining. I'm sure that would be infectious and the audience could feel it... much like their performance during Carols by Candlelight, 2008.
I adore Anthony's vocals. Thank you!
alwaysthebest82 3 years ago
Gosh. Thanks for your great comment. It's so good to get away from debates about 'who is the best Mark in RENT' and back to comments about this actual performance. They are so dynamic and energetic together, aren't they? And I agree, it's obvious they love singing and entertaining together and that they also like each other very much.
Forwardthinker22 3 years ago
That's right. It's a song from 'Rent' performed by two of the cast, but it's not a rehearsal nor are they in 'character' here. It's for television entertainment. I think they are 'dynamic' in that they give one hundred percent to giving the best performance and that energy comes across clearly. They work well together and I am a sucker for Anthony's full sounding notes, so was so happy to hear them again in this. Thank you!
alwaysthebest82 3 years ago
If you want to hear parts of the actual show, there are some audio clips plus some video clips. Look for wabizpeh, keirrac
mairanya1 2 years ago
Thank you for letting me know. I will certainly check them out.
alwaysthebest82 2 years ago
I don't like his voice for that part. It's not a fixed view of the world, it's a specific view of the part of Mark Cohen.
He would be fantastic in ANOTHER ROLE in another show because he has a greatgreatgreat voice. But my personal opinion is that it does not fit the part.
BroadwayBaby008 3 years ago
I can't think of anything in the the writing of the show to say that Mark can't sound like this and do justice to the music as only a musician can. He was described as 'perfect' in the role. It would be interesting to know what your specific view of the part of Mark is?
mairanya1 3 years ago
well....Mark, even in Jonathan Larson's book (not the musical) RENT he describes Mark skinny, Jewish, with a short trimmed beard and with a slightly squeaky yet powerful voice, just like Anthony's
rory1494 3 years ago
i mean Anthony Rapp of course...
rory1494 3 years ago
Thanks for explaining. I've never heard Anthony Rapp sound powerful and he doesn't look Jewish, skinny with a short trimmed beard, does he! lol. I'm writing as someone who loves good music, so I think having someone sing properly, totally in tune, shows off Larsen's music far better. The musical seen now isn't what he originally wrote anyway. I prefer more musical interpretations. I know others don't but I'm not going to say their way is wrong - it's just not my taste.
mairanya1 3 years ago
well.... yea, i understand what you mean ( and dont worry, both Angel and Collins where described as white and blond, and they ended up being black and latino :D)
rory1494 3 years ago
Thanks for your comment that Anthony Callea is a great singer. I appreciate that.
It seems, however, that you think Anthony Rapp is the only person who can do this role. I can understand your viewpoint, but I guess we'll just have to agree to differ on that one.
I see the role as more a musical one than an actor's role and therefore I prefer to hear a singer do the role.
Best wishes from Australia.
Forwardthinker22 3 years ago
Anthony Callea is not Mark. Don't let the identical first names confuse you. Anthony Rapp... now HE was Mark. and amazing!!
But this guy (although he has an amazing voice) Is completly wrong for the part of Mark. Honestly!
BroadwayBaby008 3 years ago
I'm not at all confused - I saw the actual show several times and Anthony Callea was an excellent Mark. They're just singing a song and not singing in character here - it's a TV show for charity before they started rehearsal. I agree about his voice - I loved hearing the music sung so well.
mairanya1 3 years ago
Broadwaybaby, how can you say someone is wrong for a part in a show, when you haven't actually seen that show? It doesn't make sense. As Mairanya said, this is a pre-reheasal TV show.
Seems to me you have a very fixed view of the world.

...and by "better" I meant better than the unrehearsed ones that Rapp and Pascal have done before. The quality of their performances on the OBC CD and the DVD are better than the ones they have done in other places, at least for me.
The4thSoprano 3 years ago
You were clear but I wasn't, sorry! That was how I read your 'better', so I wasn't reacting to you but to other posts which said Anthony Rapp sings better. I've tried so many clips and the DVD plus CD, but just can't enjoy that performance style. It's completely different, just different tastes.
mairanya1 3 years ago
I'm a purist, so I absolutely love the OBC version with Anthony Rapp (who I got to meet in person when he came to my college) and Adam Pascal, but these two can tear it up, too! If you want to hear a much better rehearsed version of Anthony R and Adam, check out the movie clips on YouTube, the OBC recording, or the movie soundtrack. It's good stuff.
The4thSoprano 3 years ago
I'm not sure what you mean by purist in this context? I have the OBC CD and tried the DVD, but I call myself a purist too because I like music to be musical, totally in tune. It's a matter of taste for different styles really. I put this up because it was a TV appearance shown only in Western Australia, just before they started rehearsal for Rent. I didn't mean to start a competition, but can't stop myself reacting when there's mention of the 'singing' being better. lol
mairanya1 3 years ago
LOL It's all good, dude. By 'purist' I meant that in this instance I prefer the original interpretation, but this one is a very close second. No competition on my end. :-D
The4thSoprano 3 years ago
lol. It's good that you accept both. It's interesting how that first production has cemented itself in so many people's minds so they can't. Even a franchised musical like Wicked allows different interpretations of the characters, but maybe that will change too if a film is made. (I'm waiting for people to start wondering why ABBA don't sound like Meryl Streep. lol )
mairanya1 3 years ago
I just love it - I didn't see Rent I really wish I had been fortunate enough to but really love all the great songs from it and Anthony's voice is so great and strong. I really love Anthony and Tim's version.

ads812 3 years ago
Forwardthinker22 3 years ago
I have the cast CD so think you may be right but of course they could also do lots of takes and choose all the best bits. have you seen the video clips of this Perth production? There are some up on YouTube. Anthony hadn't done much if any rehearsal with the cast at this stage, so far as I know, as he was in Sydney performing in Dead Man Walking until just before Telethon.
mairanya1 3 years ago
I know that they did this performance virtually straight after Anthony arrived in Perth, so with not much rehearsal time, they were amazing! I thought Anthony was so strong in this performance, holding the lower undercurrent so powerfully to Tim's higher level notes. Tim had to work so hard to match him, but he did brilliantly, I thought.
Forwardthinker22 3 years ago
Tim later said he'd felt intimidated by having to sing with Anthony but I agree he did really well. I saw the show in Bunbury on its second night and then various times in Perth including the last night and Tim's singing developed each time I heard him. I just wished Anthony also had some longer solos with time for applause at the end!
mairanya1 3 years ago
I didn't like the movie for the above reasons. I'd be interested to see how it compares to the stage version. That said, I thought the musical composition was brilliant and the singers were first rate. I still prefer the Anthony Callea/Tim Campbell song shown here because of the sheer musicality of the performance. Their harmonies are so good. The Americans 'talk' the song more and their 'live' performances are not as good as on the movie version. (just my viewpoint)
Forwardthinker22 3 years ago
And mine. I couldn't actually get through the DVD, to be honest, because of the lack of musicality.
Some songs are missed from the DVD version - I do know that. I think Halloween might be one of them, but someone may have to correct me if I'm wrong.
mairanya1 3 years ago
I never get tired of this performance. I think they both sound fantastic and it is a great performance.
nufinmore 3 years ago
their voices arent raw enough! although tim does an ok job... sorry.. die hard RENT fan here ;)
ish83 3 years ago
There's actually nothing in the text of Rent to say their voices have to be raw though - it's just people are used to that. The whole production was really good musically - most were, like Anthony, highly trained singers.
mairanya1 3 years ago
i should've said that their voices arent raw enough FOR ME. nothing against their talents which they do have alot of, ist just that Jonathan larson actually was originally looking for those who were Raw and rough around the edges and not so polished. But still great job for these guys...
ish83 3 years ago
lol Thanks for explaining! I'm glad Jonathan Larson's wishes weren't followed in the casting here - I loved the music just sung and played really well.
mairanya1 3 years ago
I find that a strange comment. I have watched the movie 'Rent' and find the characters are basically 'middle-class people' who are living an alternative lifestyle and getting into drugs (and thesubsequent consequences). There is nothing RAW or underbelly about these people. In fact, the story comes across with a smalzy American feel that undermines the seriousness of the subject matter. However, the music and singers are good. Got to say, I prefer Anthony and Tim singing this song any time.
Forwardthinker22 3 years ago
agree - Joanne is a lawyer, Collins a lecturer, Benny a property-owner and the others have middle-class parents. 'Poverty' is relative when you're in their situation. As a student I couldn't afford a phone! I could write a book about the inconsistencies in Rent and the misconceptions that have arisen as a result. However I still loved the show when the music was performed well, as it was in this production.
mairanya1 3 years ago
I think Tim and Anthony gave a great performance
anamona007 3 years ago 2
Well... I think if this were the first time I heard the song, I'd be like, WOW! But I heard the original first.... and my sister was so lucky to see the last showing of the original cast... and I never saw it! Just heard it and saw the movie...
Doxygurl 3 years ago
Huh... these guys are like the complete opposites of Pascal and Rapp.
Dabednego 3 years ago 3
I think you make an interesting point, not nit-picking! You realise this isn't in character? It was staged quite differently. I never work out how much the picture of Mark comes from Rent itself and how much from people being used to it performed Anthony Rapp style. Reading it closely, I find Mark's character confusing. Otherwise, I only know Rent through this version and just prefer everything sung well. I haven't yet heard smooth tenor from Adam. This was Tim singing before full rehearsals.
mairanya1 3 years ago
Well put, well put. I think this is a good performance, but after hearing the original to me it's kind of like... eating at your favorite restaurant after it gets a new chef :).
And I heartily encourage you to get the original cast recording. It's amazing.
Dabednego 3 years ago
That's an excellent analogy! I do have the original cast recording, but must say I prefer 'this chef' as for me good singing is more important and I can't listen unless the pitch is true. I'm glad you find this good though.
mairanya1 3 years ago
this is really good.. fantastic. never knew tim had that vocal range brillant. This song is hard to sing for Roger coz he has to hits A's alot.. Reason i know is coz im playing Roger with a comapny doing RENT.
ALTL 3 years ago 2
It really is a hard part to sing in lots of ways isn't it and Tim was very good - he got better and better as the run went on. Apart from range he also has a very sweet tone as well as the rock sound. This was before they actually started rehearsal together as Anthony had just finished Dead Man Walking in Sydney. I hope Rent goes very well for you and your company.

I don't see how a young Italian guy could play nerdy Jewish boy. But I do love Anthony and RENT and I still feel he did a great job.
markcohen6969 4 years ago
well everyone would think that because the obc is seen as the real character and its someone else playing the role. and i agree with you on everything!
vivalavibohem14 4 years ago
Yeah, true. Anthony Callea was wonderful, but nobody can ever ebat Anthony Rapp (the ogirinal Mark from when it debuted in the Nederlander theater)
markcohen6969 4 years ago
I didn't see Anthony Rapp's performance but I've heard him and Anthony Callea is a far better singer. I know some people don't look for that but it's what's most important for me. There's nothing in the text to say Mark's a nerd. Is Anthony Rapp Jewish?
mairanya1 4 years ago
No he's Christian turned agnostic. I do agree that Anthony C has a better voice but only because he has the voice of a recording artist whilst Anthony R has the voice and the acting skills of a proper Broadway performer, so they're very different. Nobody can ever beat the original, but Anthony C did come very, very close.
markcohen6969 4 years ago
I thought he wasn't! I know how popular the Broadway style is - I just prefer more musical performances. But I'm glad you thought Anthony was good - I know people find Anthony Rapp a hard act to follow and this wasn't in context either. It was performed very differently on stage.
mairanya1 4 years ago
There's nothing here to show Anthony's acting skills as they're just singing in a charity TV show before rehearsals started. While he does record, he is, more than anything, a superb live singer. He won a Mo award after his first tour. I think he'd make a 'proper Broadway performer' too. lol
muzicanoz 3 years ago 2
these guys are really good but the guy playing mark is a little too good looking for the role. he could play roger but he deffinately has the voice.
vivalavibohem14 4 years ago
It would be interesting to hear him sing Roger's songs, wouldn't it! Why do so many people feel Mark can't be goodlooking? There's nothing in the text to say he isn't and he had Maureen as a girlfriend. She is supposed to be very attractive to both sexes.
mairanya1 4 years ago
haha, I see your point. Maybe its because the OBC's mark, anthony rapp, isnt very attractive and we all expect every person who plays mark should look like the orginal person who played the role, kind of nerdy and bohemian looking.
vivalavibohem14 4 years ago
I'm no expert on Rent, but that's how it seems to me - that Anthony Rapp has been so successful people expect Mark to be Anthony Rapp, if you see what I mean. Some people think Anthony R is attractive though, I think? Anthony C's voice is stunning but most people do tend to 'notice' his looks lol.
mairanya1 4 years ago
haha !! i guess so. Thats exactly what I was trying to say about the whole, people expect every person who play mark to look and sound exactly like Anthony Rapp. You worded what I tried to say to make more sense :)
vivalavibohem14 4 years ago
I just hopw Anthony Callea had thick glasses, a nerdy hairdo, a striped scarf and plaid jacket because that is what distinguishes Mark the most. But I reckon Anthony Rapp's gorgeous!! In a strange, nerdy kinda way, but he's still hot.
markcohen6969 4 years ago
lol I'm happy for Anthony Callea playing Mark to look like Anthony Callea. There's nothing in the text to say he's a nerd. I know lots of people think Anthony Rapp is hot anyway.
mairanya1 4 years ago
lol I keep having this conversation. Jewish? At least he has dark skin and hair. I don't see why Mark should be a nerd - he had a glamorous girlfriend and is vey much part of 'La Vie Boheme'. Do you think it's because people expect Anthony Rapp and Anthony is so different? Thanks for commenting anyway. The production is over now but it really was very good.
mairanya1 4 years ago
I wish they were in costume! but they can't give too much away about the show especially during telethon. Anyway Tims got a great rock voice and I know Anthony Callea can pull off Marks (anthony rapp) spastic dancing for la vie boheme! I'm seeing the final show tomorrow - can't wait.
Hot4Anth 4 years ago 2
lol I hope he dances like Anthony Callea acting Mark and not Anthony Rapp. This was before Anthony had started rehearsing with the rest of the cast. I hope you love the show when you see it. This one is stunning and Halloween and his part in Goodbye Love are even better.
mairanya1 4 years ago
I totally agree with u. I saw the final show Lastnight. Anthony was amazing in "Goodbye love". Different than the original Mark but it was all really well done. His singing outdid his acting. Tim Campbell was the best actor of the night. Him and Anthony make a good team.
Hot4Anth 4 years ago
Thanks for coming back - I was there too for the last night. I loved the way Anthony sang and acted the part. His dramatic solos were just beautiful weren't they! I'm glad you agree.

as much as they're superb singers....they just don't fit the personas of the characters...i've never though i'd say this...but they're too...pretty boy...to be either character!!
alphaclone0220 4 years ago
I know this is just taste - for me the music is what counts. I didn't know Roger and Mark couldn't be goodlooking. Don't people find the two original actors attractive? The West Australian reviewer thought Anthony Callea was 'perfect as Mark'. This was before they'd started rehearsing and not how the songs are in the show. They're dressed for the Telethon closing ceremony. It's a pity they can't be seen in context - it's really powerful. Thanks for watching and commenting.
