  • the reason i like the Allegheny is because it has a cool sounding whistle(my opion). i'm saveing up my money to get wider o-gauge curves and to get one of those.

  • I've seen the real thing in person!

  • excellent! 5*

  • great train, but the whistle sounds like some guy yelling "Woooo!"

  • wow thats soo amazing!

  • Beautiful loco! And the box cars looks great, too !!! Wonderful train.

  • I can't articulate (ha-ha) why, but the 2-6-6-6 seems more enthralling to watch than the 4-6-6-4 Challenger and 4-8-8-4 Big Boy. Perhaps the side-rod work is more intricate or the locomotive itself has a more complex appearance. Regardless I find the Allegheny more interesting to watch in action than the other articulateds. If anyone can relate and can explain why, please let me know-- otherwise please pardon my babbling :-).

  • The reasons the Allegheny is more enthralling than the Big Boy are: 1 the vertical pilot steps; 2 the flying air compressors; 3 Its height; 4 the large diameter boiler; 5 the leading truck has a heavy-duty frame; 6 the giant sand domes & pipework coming down the sides of the boiler; 7 the massive firebox that you can play handball in. Points 1 - 4 adds up to a very imposing looking loco from the front The BB has most of its piping under a shell much like the Euro steamers & a skinnier boiler.

  • The Challenger was not even in the same class for power or size as the Allegheny---Allegheny was much larger. The Challenger did not match up to the N&W Class "A" either. 125,000 to 96.000 lbs of tractive effort. The Challenger was not one of the more powerful articulate Locos.

  • The Allegheny is a great engine, beautifully done here. I also like the K-4 in the background.

  • Excellent! That heaviest steamer ever made is second.

  • A little unusual that the tender has one 3-axle truck and the other a 4-axle rtuck.

  • fantastico he disfrutado viendolo,,,gran maquina y gran tren,,,,,saludos desde CANFRANC...5*****

  • i bet this engine was probably a worthy rival against the up challenger.

  • The Challengers and the Alleghenies were never compared side by side... We'll never know since an Allegheny will most likely never run again.

  • Nice train vid! Is this loco really the heaviest steamer ever made, or am I thinking of the Yellowstone? Thx.

  • Impressive smoker!!

  • i found 3 of these off of MTH's web site and they still want close to retail for them. isee they did an imperial model.

  • bonjour

J'ai 8 ans et je suis passionné de train. je voudrais savoir comment vous faites fumer les locomotives.

    Merci pour votre réponse

    Hippolyte

  • Le liquide dans la chemiee de la loco.

  • today i just got the virginian 900, what a beauty. brand new. but i cant tell what i payed for it. it was a K-line leftover. good video! sweet train!

  • MTH is bringing the allegheny back in Railking's Imperial Series. Check out the catolog on their websight! Now if they would just release it in premier again...

  • My great Grandfather worked on the C&O and he was able to work on the Allegheny's so chances are he worked on the real life version of that loco.

  • That engine makes a big boy look awful, it's much better looking too.

  • heck yea they were beautiful. Lima built them with pride. i am a huge fan of these wonderful locos and i live not far from where they were built. wouldnt it b nice if they actualy restored # 1601???

  • Yeah it would be awesome if they restored 1601. I just wish the economy wasn't so screwed up right now.

  • Beauty! Those freight cars look really nice!

  • arent they called malets?

  • My boy was transfixed by this model. I got to see the Allegheny 1604. Friggin MONSTROUS.

Escellent job on the filming, lighting. It takes a lot for my little man to stare at the anything for more then a minute!

  • wow, that thing is strong.

  • my two little boys thought the whistle sounds cool & a bit scary - well done chum!

  • Who cares if you think the whistle sucks, the Model is beautiful

  • Unfortunately for all of you critics, that's the actual whistle of the actual locomotive.

  • @toytrains1 just ignore all of them there are too many h8rs out there!

  • The whistle sounds cheap. It sounds like my wife sitting on the toilet after her morning coffee

  • what a crappy whistle...

  • I love the cars

  • how realistic

  • im shopping and im chosing between this engine, the union pacific challenger, and the big boy...which should i go with?

  • well in my oppinion, i liket eh allegehny better than the challenger....not cause the overhang beacuse that is like the same, but the detail....very few engines with that horn....the only thingg is that the price range is different...i would do a wtb on the ogr forum or do a post of an opppinion

  • big boy by far

  • The model's good, nice smoke, it's just the whistle that needs work! It sounds too European!

  • While it may sound European, it is the prototypically correct whistle for this locomotive as you can hear in some of the videos of the prototype that are available.

  • WHAT???!!! I usually hear hooters on articulateds!

  • @LNERMallard I think the whistle on this one is a howler. I know 1218 has one.

  • @LNERMallard It's the prototypical "banshee" whistle.

  • I have a K-Line of the self same steamer. Also my favorite.Have read that the Allegheny's were even more powerfull than the Big Boys, due to it's massive 9ftx15ft boiler and tipped the scales at 775,000lbs without tender. This beast also consumed 1 ton of coal and 1000 gallons of water when pulling a max load, every mile. Now thats fuel economey.

  • you should see the rivarossi one.

  • thats fuckin unbelievable!how much did you pay for it?

  • That bell sounds nice.

  • exceptional!

  • COOL!

  • AWESOME!

  • sweet video ,love that classic C&O hooter whistle!! check out herron rail video B&O/C&O steam power

  • is that live steam?? if not, how do you get that smoke showing so well?

    and is that lionel? ( "O" )

  • This is an O-gauge electric train. The smoke shows well since MTH (not Lionel) steamers have very good smoke units. I also have about 1000 watts of lighting directed at the train from over my shoulder when I'm filming so it does a good job lighting up the column of smoke from the locomotive.

  • Oh and one little tidbit, youe track will stay cleaner MUCH longer if you do NOT use he smoke units, if they work the same way is an HO scale one, the unit uses an electrical current to heat light mineral oilt until it smokes (technically it boils) and we all know the water cycle: "Evaporation, Condensation Precipitaton" :)

  • Yes, I know how the smoke units work. However, the smoke is part of the fun of the models. I just need to run the track cleaning car more often!

  • This engine is demonic two-SIX-SIX...Uh you get the point. All yout other engines are cool though. Oh and what's with the twitchy signal?!

  • Simple equation: insulated rail + dirty track + dirty wheels = twitchy signal. ::sigh:: The layout really needs a good cleaning.
