I love all of her phases/periods, but there's something particularly wonderful about her "Turbulent Indigo" period, winning the grammy, getting inducted in the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, reuniting with her daughter. The mid 90's were very good to Joni.
@maryzhol1 Diana Krall does a fantastic version. Actually when I compare their voices I can see similarities and see why I really like both of them as much as I do. I like the versions with Jaco Pastorious on bass.
SupernalOne!! I just accidentally thumped down your comment and i was trying to thumb it up and it won't let me undo it! i didn't want you to think i didn't agree because Joni is just.....amazing....she's my all time favourite artist... :-D
I feel so lucky to have had Joni M. in my musical universe. She gave melody to Yeats - reality to living in LA - and home to her long lost daughter. Joni - you are a total fucking pistolnero! Hola!
wow, her face really shows her Indian blood, and gives her a strong anazing beauty - the smoking didn't kill her voice either -- looks like she knows how to rock, too - got away from the folky roots here - she was always into road trips and new men -- artists can seem flakey to talk to sometimes, but that's what it takes to stay tuned in to the creative force - the muse is irrational but essential - Mitchell is like a Muse incarnate - unequalled
Joni never stopped learning either. Her jazz performances were unbelievable. She did a tour with Pat Metheny, Jaco Pastorius, Don Alias, and Michael Brecker. the music that they created was otherworldly. This song was included in that set.

Love the song....however....The "Shadows and Light" version with Jaco Pastorius and Pat Metheny if superior musically. IMHO.

Teases you with the "Amelia" intro - now I"m going to have to go listen to that one too! :)

the only problem with this version when it comes to the bass, is the lack of Jaco's harmonics - they added so much.

there is absolutely no reason to use a 5-string bass on this song. ruined.
soopahsoopah 1 year ago
@soopahsoopah You think a 4-string would have sounded better? ROFL

@soopahsoopah I don't dislike the 5 string but those things are best for metal and dark weird stuff like that

Richard Thompson rocked this at the tribute to Joni that aired on TBS around the time of the orchestral album. Great song!

Maybe it's cause I'm used to Diana Krall's version, I've been listening to it for years, but I prefer Diana's version :)

Does a soul a lot of good to tune in to Joni every so and again; like dancing all the way to and from church.
