  • I love Ant too.

If I could do 1/4th as well I might have quibble... mostly how a few of the notes were accented. AP did better, but in the studio version he could prob start and stop, 'splice' parts together. - (Hackett in an interview about Metamorpheus said he recorded his gtr in small segments of between 10-30secs long! Very 'humble' of him I thought.)

Do you do any of your own stuff? I'd like to hear some.

  • @marmas58ink

Thank you, I'd like to but don't have any stuff of my own.

Probably with that method one could record the perfect "Reaper".

  • Two people disliked this?

  • what kind of guitar is this??? the sound is so distinct!

  • @vidgamer77

It's the same 12-string that I've been using... well, since this video actually. I guess it sounds good because it was brand new? It's a Fender DG14S-12 btw. You can find many 12 strings better than this one though ;)

  • Beautiful rendition of "Reaper!" Did you notice that in Ant's comments on Private Part and Pieces", his 12 string was actually out of tune? It's actually nice to hear it in tune for once! Great job! Wish I could play like that! Completely Jealous!

  • @Sparrowhawk1161

Thank you! I had no idea of that, does he really say that? I haven't found that comment on the cd booklets.

  • @hyperboreal It was on the back of the vinyl cover that I picked up back in the 80's

  • Well done Sir!

  • Sounds great. Camino records are re-releasing PP&P1 and PP&P2 in Feb 2010 with all pre-orders signed by Ant himself. There is also a promise of a previously unreleased track too!

  • Yeah, I know, I've already ordered my signed copy ;^)

It's great that they're releasing new editions of Ant's work, some of the albums were hard to get if not impossible since were out-of-print. I hope they continue releasing more of the Private Parts & Pieces series. I read that they're also releasing Sides (remastered edition) and Sail the World. 2010 couldn't start better!

  • I'm going to figure this out! What a pretty piece!

  • Excellent, I would love to see your take on this piece.

  • Astounding. You have not just played the piece well technically; you have captured every emotional nuance. "Reaper" has been not just my favorite Phillips piece, but my all time favorite acoustic piece. It is unsurpassed in beauty and a work of true genius.

  • Thank you so much. I tried to reply before but the message got lost. This is one of my favorite guitar pieces too, the 'Scottish Suite' and solo live versions of this one are equally fascinating as well. True genius as you said.

  • Well done! I've worn out two or three copies of that record over the years.

  • Wow! I've been wanting to figure this song out for ages. I always suspected the guitar couldn't be in standard tuning, but I somehow had the it was in open G, not open D. Anyway, thanks for posting this.

  • amazing! lots of compliments!

  • could you do master of time?

  • Brilliant! You are a true maestro! How about some new vid's? It doesn't matter if it's not perfect,

  • Thanks a lot hughes, glad to inform that I will post some classic Ant soon (and a personal favorite of mine).

  • 7:50 of Paradise. Thank you for the gift !

I'm not familiar with the 12 strings, when you say DADF#AD do you mean DDAADDF#F#AADD ?

  • That's right Zardoz. Thank you.

  • How exactly did you find out the tuning to this song?

  • In this piece the natural harmonics at the start were the key. You can hear clearly he's playing a D major barre chord, the disposition of the notes on the different strings are then easy to figure out.

  • It's not really so much difficult to decipher once you can take a look at the fretboard, as in this case. However, if you have a question on a specific chord that you have trouble with you can ask me.

  • Removed one of my earlier replies by accident. Thanks for all your compliments . To answer your question again, I don't have any intention to do tabs of these tracks. It'd be great if this music was published someday though (even if it's only in pdf format like they did with some Steve Hackett pieces that are available at his website).

  • Man i can't believe you can play this song, and all the others you play, so incredibly well man! You feel the true meaning and emotion behind these tracks...bravo man, i cant stop watching these videos...did you ever think of putting together a book of tablature for these songs or a website or something? I'd love to attempt some parts!

Thanks for the great tributes to Anthony Phillips the BEST!!

  • I'm an old Genesis fan from Italy and a guitarist too....of course I got all Ant Phillips records..man,your guitar playing is absolutely fantastic! Great Job!

  • Thanks a bunch man, it means a lot coming from quite an Ant fan as you. I'll be doing more classic Ant 12-string pieces in the future.

  • Great job. Very nice.

  • man that was awesome one of the most beautiful peices ive heard in a long time

  • That's very kind of you, thanks.

  • That was beautiful. Thanks from an old Genesis fan/(really) amateur guitar player.

  • I appreciate your comment. Thank you gerry, from another semi-old Genesis fan.

  • Como siempre, es un gran gusto y placer escucharte y verte tocar, no puedes decir que eres un amateur, definitivamente tocando asi no. Gracais por compartir esto con nosotros!!!! Un saludo y un abrazo , Pina

  • Playin` too, love Genenesis as well...but UR playin` like i`ll never..but with UR vids i`ve got new inspiration. Thanx!!:) grtz from Poland

  • Muchas gracias EduUshuaia.

  • His best solely acoustic track ever, the brilliance of the melodies is just out of control. Your version is great, near flawless, thanks so much for this!

  • Agree, this piece is AMAZING. Glad you liked my playing.

  • This is one of my favorite vids on youtube. You are a wonderful guitarist! Keep up the amazing work!

  • Thank You!

  • Goodness, you play so well. Are you a professional? Ant Phillips is one of my long time favorite players. Thank you for posting this. It's a favorite of mine now...

  • Thanks for your appreciation nogodorpolitics. I'm not pro, just an amateur guitarist with a cam and a lot of spare time. This piece is also a favourite of mine, it's indeed a magical creation.

  • The hands of an artist who has done a ton of wood-shedding.

  • You are fantastic!! I have been playing since 1967 and many years as a professional and you are really amazing. Wahat strings do you use?

    Regards

    Jonathan

  • Much appreciated! Can't tell you what kind of strings were since I had just recently bought the guitar when I recorded this video. I'm not vey picky with strings, anything from Dean Markley to D'Addario will do for me. As for the gauge I use light for the 12-string and medium on the standard guitars.

Guy, you're as good as the master himself. Too bad that Ant isn't doing videos. I play some Ant at the piano, but I'd love to play some on guitar as well as you. Maybe I could watch your tabs.....do you realize that you could give live shows of this !!!!

  • WOW! excellent guitar playing. What guitar are you using?

  • Thanks jason25481, it's a Fender DG14S12.

  • You play in many styles .I like the spirit of this music.*****

  • Thank you so much for this! And I hope Tregenna Afternoons is next! :D

  • Lovely !! What a pleasure to see how this piece was done . I always loved this tune . You're great Hyper ! Thanks to share this delight with us .

  • Hyper!

Congratulations on another amazing piece. You are now beginning to tackle the wonderful 12-string work of one its true masters. Is the tuning on Reaper standard, or does it have some funky tuning? And if so, how did you figure it out? Your guitar sounds very nice - even over these cheap speakers. You are inspiration! - - Mcgraster

  • Thank you. It's not standard, you have to tune some strings down (from thicker to thinner it's DADF#AD). To figure it out I always pay attention whenever any open string is being played, they use to sound a little more bright than the fretted notes and you also have to notice when within a determinate chord progression some of this notes are repeatedly played. In this piece, the natural harmonics helped a lot.

  • Your right hand is blessed by God. A neat perfect picking, not to say of your ear.

You are a true artist, thanks for sharing.

  • Absolutley fantasic!

  • Great job again!!!

  • Excellent!

  • enjoyed this so much cheers

  • I'm really glad you liked it.

  • Alex, you the man! How you work out all those detailed picking patterns and keep this thing afloat for a whopping 7 minutes 50 seconds is completely beyond me. My hats off, WAY off, to you.

Well, i'd actually given you 5 stars before you'd even played 15 seconds. But you deserved all of 'em.

If you didn't mention making any mistakes I wouldn't have heard any. But remember, Ant didn't do his version all in one go, I'm sure.

Congratulations on another fine job. I sure hope Ant watches you!

  • Thanks so much for those nice words buddy.

  • Wonderful new guitar!!! you laways keep amazing me!

  • That was quick, thank you PKP ;)
