Synthesis, particularly of traditional orchestral instruments, since the M1 has offered composers so much freedom - so Zappa, was as much composer as guitarist, and technically was a gear head, too. He made the first feature film on video and was completely for the DIY aesthetic that is freeing creative choice from corporate commercial claptrap.
Wait a minute Frank Zappa was always interested in stuff! new ways of recording! he was messing about with multi speaker stuff remember :) I say Zappa would have been experimenting with everything if he was still about today :) kept an open mind! find what works well together and what doesn't
