If that did not happen to rain drops, they would probably hurt like hell when they would hits us after falling from way up in the sky. Rain drops simply burst and reform a bit closer to the ground, burst and reform.... on and on.

@cdesalliers And because the falling water conserves momentum it makes no difference to the force with which they hit us (apart from a potential breaking effect during reformation).
