@vincecarter15231 That Assist Hand can really screw up your shot. It is usually the "Thumb" of that hand that is the culprit! Work to get the hand off the ball earlier and pin the thumb to your first finger to take it off the ball. The thumb is what causes the bad rotation.
@ShotScience I play on a highschool team so I'm practicing everyday and we play 5on5 at the end of almost every practice and I usually do fairly well in them but then when I get into games my shots are off. I know I can make them just when in games I don't make that much.
@DaOfficialDominique There are several things that can be a problem for you here. One is a lack of confidence in your shooting. If so, get to work on "Game Speed Shooting" drills. Other things that affect us is fatigue, are unknown and aggressive defenders.
When I'm practicing I swish almost everything especially from mid range but then when I get into game situations I don't make as many shots as I do in practice even if I'm open. Any tips? Thanks!
@DaOfficialDominique Well remember, in games you have defenders, fatigue and speed of execution that will affect your shot. Practice, practice, practice is the answer.
Whenever I shoot It mostly goes to the either right side of the rim and misses or to the left side of the rim and misses how do I get perfectly in the middle and make it?!?
@xSickxxVirusx The ball is going to go where your finish fingers go. If they go to the middle of the nest, then the ball should go there as well, UNLESS your shooting mechanics need some work. If that is the case go to our shooting videos and spend some time working on your stroke. Good luck.
@karukehataha This is an easy one. Most young players do not connect the legs to the shot. That's where the power for shooting really lies. Watch our video "Make Three Pointers!! Get your legs into it."
@xiamwillx Whoa, whoa!!! We totally feel that you do not want much spin on your shot. Check out our video "Basketball Shooting Release - The Flop Finnish" to find out why. Too much rotation makes the shot too live coming off the rim.
@shotscience coach i disagree when you say to much rotation on the ball is bad. they did a sports science on espn about ray allens shot. and they said all his backspin helps him a lot. they say the more spin u have on ur shot, the more the ball slows down when it hits the rim
@23baseballer Well, we disagree then!!! The more rotation that you get on your ball, the more energy that will be released when the ball hits the rim, therefore a longer rebound. A soft rotation ball tends to stay around the basket. We have studied this as well and are TOTALLY convinced that less rotation is best no mater what espn may say!
@oneonly606 Check out our video "Basketball Shooting Release- "The Fop" for a better understanding of the importance of the rotation on your shot. Too much is not good!
Coach what about if the ball just rolls around the rim before coming out is their a problem with your shot or is it something you can't do anything about
@KoV0502 This reaction for the ball is usually due to a shot with a flat arc. You can work on getting the proper arc on the ball. Check out our video "Get Perfect Shooting Arc."
I am a pretty good shooter... maybe the only thing I am good at... lol... But I don't have extended range... I'm adept at long 2s... I still can hit 3s accurately, but I myself know that is not my range... Help?
@scapicoco You are asking us to offer some reasons for your inability to shoot longer shot?? If that is your question the answer is this. Go to our video "Get Your Legs Into It" to understand how you must use that leg power. They are the largest muscles and we need them for longer shots.
@WhereAmazynHappens: The power issue is all about the use of your legs. Often we don't connect the leg power to our stroke and therefore our shot "FEELS UNDER-POWERED" and it is! Check our video "Three Point Shooting - Get Your Legs Into It" for how to use the legs. The ball going to the right is all due to your finishing toward the right, probably with "Pronation of the Wrist" or turning your wrist to that side on your finish. Make sure that the fingers go directly to the hoop.
@WhereAmazynHappens: Amazyn, you have the power and there is not question for us about that. What you need to do is 'LEARN TO CONNECT THIS POWER" to your shooting stroke. Keep working on it, it will come. Review the video for a better understanding of CONNECTION."
@ShotScience Its alot better know, thanks so much, i just need to work on my pull up jumper and 3 pointer, but these videos have helped my improve alot.
@WhereAmazynHappens This really pleases us. Keep up the hard work and become a beast! This "Interactive Series" really helps diagnose shooting problems and offer solutions as well. "SWEET!"
@WhereAmazynHappens: Hey Amazyn, there are several videos in the "Interactive Shooting Guide" that address shooting problems and how to fix them. Check them out. BTW, that Assist Hand (no guide hand) is probably a real culprit in your accuracy. Check out our videos on "The Assist Hand."
@ShotScience that didn't really answer my question. Are there any mistakes if the shot is in and out? I'm asking this because there are no videos about missing the shot when it is in and out.
@bigmacjaheen: Well, we could make videos forever and not be able to address this question. In reality, we can shoot the best shots ever and they can be off just a little bit and not go in. This Rim-out that you are talking about may be a little flat because that is what often happens on the rim-out. Other than that we do not have anything for you. Sorry!!!!
@bigmacjaheen many times, the in and out shots are a result of flat shots and/or bad rotation. Check out the explanations for those problems and it should give you a better idea on how to correct that problem, okay?
@thelankyginger: Hey, we did miss your question. We think we may have answered someone else's.
Well, the step back is a true "STEP BACK" and not a hop back which too many players use. We like the terms "STEP BACK-PULL BACK." Step back with the rear foot and pull back the front foot so you stay grounded. When you hop back you often have difficulty with balance and stability. Hope this helps.
@ShotScience thanks guys any tips on how to maintain shooting form and staying on balance when taking step back jumpers and quick release shots etc? thanks
@flyerrr911: You could use a lower set point which is at your shoulder and you can see the hoop over the top of the ball. This is usually for younger players and we like to see players get the higher set point so that the ball is not so easily blocked on your shot. All mechanics for the shot are the same at either location.
@sanjiblue1: Well, you need to learn to create space for your shot and work on our shooting drills. When we play games there is always going to be defenders in our space excepting FT's. You probably need to play a lot more and learn to detach yourself from defenders.
@bonisboy: The problem is most likely that you are not using the power in your legs. If the shots "feel under-powered", then this is the problem. The fix for you is to learn to use the power of your body's largest muscles to get the power you need for your shot.
@flyingduckzz: Well, this is an easy question. In order to develop "Muscle Memory" for your shot to be the same every time you shoot, you should take a look at our video "Form Shooting Drill." This drill will help you develop the MM that you need to get the same release point every time you shoot. Also, when you release the shot your shooting elbow should be higher than your eyes. Check this too!
I'm white boy 13 years old.My height is 162 cm it s about 63 inches 5'3..Is possible to touch the rim with my size?I will use your workout 24 hours if I must! Please answer to my question!thanks
hey coach i was wondering if you can give me tips on why i keep shooting the ball but pops out i know it has to do with rotation but can you explain more
@stephgohard: If the ball is popping out you are not in or close to the "NEST." Check your arc and remember, the rotation on the ball does not need to be fast. From free throw distance 4 rotations is wonderful. Check out that video for the reasons why the slow rotation. Many coaches encourage their players to spin the ball fast. NOT GOOD! Check it out.
@stephgohard Another thing could be your assist hand may be interferring with your shot rotation so instead of it spinning downward it spinning side ways.(If you understand what im saying.) So dont let your assist hand influence your shot too much.
um, my problem for now is i cant quite control the way i want to shoot the ball. My accuracy has improved over past few months but i always have trouble finding the best shooting formation that i can be comfortable with.. any tips maybe?

Shot Science, my shot is very bad. Ive been shooting with two hands for so long that when i try to shoot with one hand it feels very weak. Ball doesnt even go near the rim. Also my form is terrible, the ball always curves left or right hitting every part of the rim. What do i need to do? Which Shot Science videos should i watch? Thanks for all your help.
@LoneStarxXx Hey, please remember to turn on annotations by clicking on the small arrow pointing upwards at the right and bottom of the video player! select the top option and you should be able to use this shooting guide. Hope this helped! (:
Way to go Casey. I have noticed such an improvement in my game since viewing ShotScience videos. I can bounce a wet towel off the bathroom wall and right into my laundry basket. I am amazed.
Way to go Casey. I have noticed such an improvement in my game since viewing ShotScience videos. I can bounce a wet towel off the bathroom wall and right into my laundry basket. I am amazed.
i have another problem its been a while before ive played basketball because of the snow and sinced its kinda cleared out now when i shoots itl spin around the rim and roll off or itl bounce off the front or the side of the rim how can i help this?
Can anyone help me with my shot My Original shot is good and its pretty constistent but my coach doesn't like it andhe wants me to start my shot from chest and up and when i do it this way my SHOOTING hand kind of makes it spin or sometimes the shot ends up short
Well tex: We can't think of any reason to begin your shot from your chest. If you check out our video on "Set Point" you can see that this makes more sense. The chest as the set point leaves the shot wide open for a block. Short shots result from not enough leg power. The legs represent about 80% of the shooting power. Without it you will be short and usually flat.
When someone passes it to me it takes 4 to 5 seconds before my shot is ready and by then the defender is all over me how can i line my shot up quicker before the defender gets to me?
slay: Why does it take so long to get ready for your shot. We believe that your shot starts before the ball arrive. You should take a short step into the shot as the ball is in the air on catch and shoot. We will be putting up a video soon on this skill.
i would love it if u made a vid on shot blocking, like where to stand and all that.
also some tips on spin moves might be helpful.
i would just like to know wot is the name of chases other channel.
i have given u five stars and il love to here from you or maybe somemore vids on wot i requested. thank u and GoodBye SHOTSCIENCE, i have subcribed rated and now commented, keep up all of the good work and may god bless you.
hey love ure videos .... i got a problem that i kinda use my left hand when i shoot aswell(im a righty) no matter how hard i try i cant loose the left while releasing but when i do its an air ball so you know how ure wrist should be downwards after u release well both my wrists are down ward but still im exactly shooting a chikenwing shot plz help me out
janjua: It sounds like your "Assist Hand" is getting in the way. If you go the to video on Assist hand you will understand what the problem is. The fix: Go to the video on "Form Shooting". In this video we shoot from different spots. When we shoot at the block it is done with just the shooting hand, No assist hand! We think that this drill will really help your problem. Hope it goes well for you and lets us know.
Jynx: Thanks so much for your comment. This really helps us to keep going. Stay tuned for more. We have 35 videos on our channel. If you have not seen them please take a look.
hey, usually during the match, we tend to get tired when shooting free throws. the ball would eventually hit the front rim or the back. any ways to control the shot?
lee: Fatigue dies create a problem for shooting all shots. On the free throws take a little time at the line to catch a quick breath. You have 10 seconds. Secondly, lots of "Form Shooting" practice will help a ton. Video due out on this set of drills in the next couple of days. We are sure this will help your shooting even when tired.
im 6.3 200 pounds and play center at my high school i was wondering when you guys are going to show post man moves that i could use in a game btw u guys are great !
Hello Coach ok 2 questions: I'm right handed and shoot right handed but, it seems my form looks and feels better with the left but, I lack power seriously. Also, my right wrist easily get sore and I actually jump better with the left foot forward shooting left, I guess I feel my left jumper can easily be blocked.
FYI I pretty good at the FT line right handed it automatic always 20 or better shooting 25 shots..
when you talk about getting your shot to game speed, how exactly do you go about that? I try to shoot quicker in games but sometimes i get away from my form and it screws up my shot. How do you quicken your shot so you can shoot right in someones face?
tscho: When we speak about game speed we are referring to shooting at the speed of the game. We don't mean to shoot faster! We usually practice at a slow comfortable speed, however, when its time to play the game the speed of the game can change our shots as you have found out. Work on your shot as if you were playing in a game. The speed here is different from practice speed. That's what we mean by "Game Speed"
Coach, im having problems shooting from the 2 point line and further. i try take free throws but sometimes only 1 or 0 out of five scores. I have tried pointing my index and middle finger to the basket but the ball sometimes finish to the right or left. Please help me ):
Its really difficult to answer your question without actually seeing what you are doing. It could be that you are pronating or supinating your wrist on the release. Send us a video of good quality and we can analyze it for you. We will wait to see you in action. Give us a look from several angles.
We have tons of clips of what it should look like in our videos. One of the best I can think of right off the top of my head is the "Airball" Interactive Guide video. It should have a slow motion depiction of the "Flop." Just take a look through the videos we've posted and you'll see many examples. Okay?
When you do the wrist flop. Is the motion of the flop same as the motion u showed in your 1st video? The index and middle finder must not curl up or something right? Can you explain it to me? thanks
Lloyd: The flop is the finish of the wrist follow through that is common to shooting. We teach the "flop" as a finishing element to reduce the amount of spin or rotation of the ball. This in turn creates a soft finish if the ball hits the rim or boards, We will have a video out on this in the near future. The ball that spins fast will have a long rebound as the energy of the spin is expended on contact with the rim. Less energy expended makes for the ball to stay near the basket.
aj: We believe that if you take the time to comment or question we owe it to you to respond to all comments. We are about helping you all become better and more effective players. Stay tuned.
Houston: Not sure exactly what you mean, however, we think that you are dropping your hand and arm at the conclusion of the shooting stroke. One thing that we encourage all of our students is to hold their final arm position in a "MJ" finish. This is, obviously, the Michael Jordan finish and hold that for 2 seconds. Really helps with the finish. Good luck and stay tuned.
We'd love to be your coaches! Since you don't have much confidence in your coaches, try being your own coach and we'll try and help you as much as we can!
this is amazing :) really innovative and helpful not only to beginners but also to more advanced players just trying to get through a shooting slump. Once again you guys have wowed me and helped me alot. keep up the great work:)
sometimes when i shoot it seems my assist hand seems to get in the way and makes the ball flat and makes it rotate weirdly or hardly at all. tips?

@vincecarter15231 That Assist Hand can really screw up your shot. It is usually the "Thumb" of that hand that is the culprit! Work to get the hand off the ball earlier and pin the thumb to your first finger to take it off the ball. The thumb is what causes the bad rotation.

@23baseballer Well, we disagree then!!! The more rotation that you get on your ball, the more energy that will be released when the ball hits the rim, therefore a longer rebound.

Way to go Casey. I have noticed such an improvement in my game since viewing ShotScience videos. I can bounce a wet towel off the bathroom wall and right into my laundry basket. I am amazed.

Can anyone help me with my shot My Original shot is good and its pretty constistent but my coach doesn't like it andhe wants me to start my shot from chest and up and when i do it this way my SHOOTING hand kind of makes it spin or sometimes the shot ends up short
texas0075 1 year ago
Well tex: We can't think of any reason to begin your shot from your chest. If you check out our video on "Set Point" you can see that this makes more sense. The chest as the set point leaves the shot wide open for a block. Short shots result from not enough leg power. The legs represent about 80% of the shooting power. Without it you will be short and usually flat.
ShotScience 1 year ago
another question
When someone passes it to me it takes 4 to 5 seconds before my shot is ready and by then the defender is all over me how can i line my shot up quicker before the defender gets to me?
slayfirefly1 2 years ago
tell sombody from your friends when your practicing to pass u the ball and release it quick...with your shooting form and ull get faster...
HoustonRocket281 2 years ago
slay: Why does it take so long to get ready for your shot. We believe that your shot starts before the ball arrive. You should take a short step into the shot as the ball is in the air on catch and shoot. We will be putting up a video soon on this skill.

hey love ure videos .... i got a problem that i kinda use my left hand when i shoot aswell(im a righty) no matter how hard i try i cant loose the left while releasing but when i do its an air ball so you know how ure wrist should be downwards after u release well both my wrists are down ward but still im exactly shooting a chikenwing shot plz help me out
janjua8 2 years ago
janjua: It sounds like your "Assist Hand" is getting in the way. If you go the to video on Assist hand you will understand what the problem is. The fix: Go to the video on "Form Shooting". In this video we shoot from different spots. When we shoot at the block it is done with just the shooting hand, No assist hand! We think that this drill will really help your problem. Hope it goes well for you and lets us know.

hey, usually during the match, we tend to get tired when shooting free throws. the ball would eventually hit the front rim or the back. any ways to control the shot?
aloysiuslee 2 years ago
lee: Fatigue dies create a problem for shooting all shots. On the free throws take a little time at the line to catch a quick breath. You have 10 seconds. Secondly, lots of "Form Shooting" practice will help a ton. Video due out on this set of drills in the next couple of days. We are sure this will help your shooting even when tired.

Thx a lot!! U guys r the best!!!!!!!!!!!!!

when you talk about getting your shot to game speed, how exactly do you go about that? I try to shoot quicker in games but sometimes i get away from my form and it screws up my shot. How do you quicken your shot so you can shoot right in someones face?
tscho613 2 years ago
tscho: When we speak about game speed we are referring to shooting at the speed of the game. We don't mean to shoot faster! We usually practice at a slow comfortable speed, however, when its time to play the game the speed of the game can change our shots as you have found out. Work on your shot as if you were playing in a game. The speed here is different from practice speed. That's what we mean by "Game Speed"
ShotScience 2 years ago
i think he means releasing the ball
bustazibit 2 years ago
Practice with another person playing defense on you and being in your face. Also have them pass the ball to you and shoot right away.

Coach, im having problems shooting from the 2 point line and further. i try take free throws but sometimes only 1 or 0 out of five scores. I have tried pointing my index and middle finger to the basket but the ball sometimes finish to the right or left. Please help me ):
LloydDaBartender 2 years ago
Lloyd:
Its really difficult to answer your question without actually seeing what you are doing. It could be that you are pronating or supinating your wrist on the release. Send us a video of good quality and we can analyze it for you. We will wait to see you in action. Give us a look from several angles.
ShotScience 2 years ago
so what does the flop look like?
LloydDaBartender 2 years ago
We have tons of clips of what it should look like in our videos. One of the best I can think of right off the top of my head is the "Airball" Interactive Guide video. It should have a slow motion depiction of the "Flop." Just take a look through the videos we've posted and you'll see many examples. Okay?
ShotScience 2 years ago
When you do the wrist flop. Is the motion of the flop same as the motion u showed in your 1st video? The index and middle finder must not curl up or something right? Can you explain it to me? thanks
LloydDaBartender 2 years ago
Lloyd: The flop is the finish of the wrist follow through that is common to shooting. We teach the "flop" as a finishing element to reduce the amount of spin or rotation of the ball. This in turn creates a soft finish if the ball hits the rim or boards, We will have a video out on this in the near future. The ball that spins fast will have a long rebound as the energy of the spin is expended on contact with the rim. Less energy expended makes for the ball to stay near the basket.

Hi im having a lil problem ,ok i dont have a follow trough when i relese the ball my hands go down it dosent stay up....any tips?
HoustonRocket281 2 years ago
Houston: Not sure exactly what you mean, however, we think that you are dropping your hand and arm at the conclusion of the shooting stroke. One thing that we encourage all of our students is to hold their final arm position in a "MJ" finish. This is, obviously, the Michael Jordan finish and hold that for 2 seconds. Really helps with the finish. Good luck and stay tuned.
