She gives it her own spin, and it's terriffic, but I still prefer Elaine Stritch on the Sondheim 80th Birthday concert. I've seen it sung by so many different people including Dolores Gray and Eartha Kitt, and it's amazing how what is essentially a repetitive, almost patter, song can be done so differently.
She is a really good actress. But what I don't understand is why Sony allows this bit from the movie but not the one of Meryl Streep signing at the end of the movie. I have listened to that at leat a dozen times, had it in my favorites even. But just now I clicked on it and they said Sony objected and pulled it because of trademark laws.
This is the self serving version of the song courtesy of the Trifecta Mutual Admiration (they meet on Tuesday nights) Society of Mike Nichols - Tommy Tune and Shirley Maclaine. Pitiful.
@jjj29871 - Scott Frankel is playing the piano. Sixteen or so years after this film, he wrote the music for the musical GREY GARDENS. GG was nominated for Ten TONY Awards and won three of them. There's another great YT video with Scott accompanying Donna Murphy in "Hit Me With a Hot Note".
Is there an unedited version of this? Savvy viewers can see there are I think 2 edits within the song. . . and btw the pianist is the composer of the brilliant "Grey Gardens" score.
I love what Carrie Fisher says about this scene: First, that contrary to popular belief she and her mother never had sing offs at parties, because "My mother would bury me." Second, Liza Minnelli called Carrie to say that this WAS her life with her mother growing up.
Shirley really owned this number in the movie (and it's a hell of a number to own :) ) Makes you wonder - wouldn't it be gravy if Debbie Reynolds sang it one day?
See was brilliant in this.... I love when she sings this.... and when she tells Meryl.... "IT TWIRLED UP" .... LOL I LOVE THIS MOVIE.... thanks for putting this clip on here... It makes me smile every time I watch it
I love this. Shirley has always had such a wonderful, commanding presence. Of course she's still here, ShirleyMac is timeless! Visit her website at shirleymaclaine. com, because sometimes, not only is she here, she is there.... which commands more presence, than being neither here, nor there! ;-)
Saw this movie on HBO today. Musical stars of the past really have commanding presence when they perform. Kids like those in Glee who aspire to do the same have a lot to learn from these masters.
Love the bit in the movie where Streep is 'telling her off' about bin drunk and her skirt twirled up...an Shirly screams "it TWIRLED up!!!!" an Streep says: "Yes mother...but you weren't wearing any UNDERWEAR" PMSL!!!!Brilliant performance rom both of em...as is always given if hiring these actresses!!
Maybe its just me, but i *hate* when the lyrics to this song are changed. Not a comment on Shirley, who I think is AMAZING. I just can't enjoy the song when I feel it's been tampered with. :-/
Shirley MacLaine great in this movie. For those of us who know some of the inside stuff: Shirley's role was based loosely on Debbie Reynolds, and Ms Streep's loosely on Carrie Fisher.. Mike Nichols directed he great cast. The House used for the sets is the home of Connie Stevens who was Ms. Fisher's former Stepmother.
Connie wanted to star as Honey in Virginia Woolf but Nichols would not even let Her. Connie charged a Queens Ransom for Nichols to use Her House. Ah revenge is sweet.
the combination of MacLaine and Streep is terrific and the film will keep you entertained even if, like in my case, will leave you with a toxic aftertaste. see the full movie at BigOnlineMovies . c o m
Loved this movie, both MacLaine and Streep were brilliant. Maclaine's always had good legs, but to think she was already in her 50's when she did this movie.
50's is old, but there are of lot of people who do not look that good at that age. You are right that those people most of the time do not see their appearance as a priority.
Scott Frankel, the young pianist here, has had an amazing Broadway career. Most recently he wrote the music for "Grey Gardens," which was nominated for ten and won three Tony Awards.
I took this performance for granted when I first saw it. Now, years and many other versions later, I have to say it's the best of this song i've ever seen. The vocals aren't always spot-on, but the emotional range, the movement, the life she brings is unbeatable.
i loved Shirley in this! And meryl was magnificent as usual!!! they made a good pair!!! especially that scene where they sing, on right after the other!
I'm not Meryl Streep's fan but she was really good here. Shirley MacLaine was excellent as always. I also like Dennis Quaid but his acting was disappointing.

Miss Mcclaine reminds us how great hollywood was.
They earned their stripes the hard way on talent not singing half naked on a stage in only a thong.
The new supposed stars need some lessons in how to sing, dance, and act.
Sure couldn't hurt any could it?
