This is the old RMS Aquitania, Grand Old Lady of the Atlantic so often called in her latter years. She was the LAST ship to have four funnels built on a ship. There hasn't been a ship like her since her demise at the ship breakers back in 1950!
I used Fraps to capture just one frame. I then colorized that frame with Paint Shop Pro. Then I put it behind the b&w video in Wax, and merged the two (made the b&w video 50% transparent) so the colour shows through.
What a magnificent video, as always. I've never seen footage of a lifeboat drill about Aquitania before and this was tremendous. I love the way you colorised certain portions and how you created the illusion of her going down. I'd love to know ho you did that and also loved the Southampton footage of the new Queen Victoria in your other new video. I didn't get the view you did of her, so salute your diligence yet again.
lovely cruises like this dont exist anymore..now its like disneyland cruises, with lavish buffets and waterslides and loud obnoxious families. ah, the good old days, when cruises were romantic travails to far off lands. minus the tourists.
Actually the difference of a liner and a cruiise ship wasnt in the paint. It was in the construction and design. The queen victoria is painted like an ocean liner, but she is a cruise ship.
A cruise-ship is like a taxi. It goes from stop to stop, making short trips. An ocean-liner is like a coach. It makes long haul trips that last for days.
Liners are supposed to have high speed, most cruise ships can barely do 22 knots. A liner has to have a buttoned up superstructure, cruise ships have exposed. Liners have long bow decks unlike cruise ships whos bow decks are short. Liners have lifeboats high above the water line, cruise ships lifeboats are placed low. Liners have deep draft unlike cruise ships whos drafts are quite low. Finally a liner must have a finely shaped hull instead of an apartment block w/ a bow and stern attached.
Haha! Nicely explained, Phoenix. Thanks! I agree, a key part of a liner's classification is that it has to have a high speed. What's the deal with the lifeboat placement?
Thank you. Because liners sail in rougher seas than cruise ships, the lifeboats have to be higher up to protect them from damage during rough weather.
@mrsbrown333 I love going to Disneyland, which is why nobody can understand why I won't go on one of their cruises. The thing is, all I would able to think about would be the great ocean liners from back in the day and how beautiful and majestic they were; a beautiful floating palace compared to a floating amusement park. As much as I love Disney, I'd rather sail on the Olympic or another great vessel.

Other than the part showing Aquitania sinking, which, thank God never happened, this was some fine, rare video footage of the "Grand Old Lady".

The Aquitania was scrapped in 1950, it never sunk.

I find that Aquitaine was a magnificent ship, with these forms inspired by the Olympic and Mauritania.
At 1:31 the alarm comes from the movie "The Poseidon Adventure (1972)" when the vessel will enter into collision with the wave ?
nice video ! :) ★ ★ ★ ★ ★

I used wax 2.0 to make you think she was sinking. (just slice the video, keep the sea where it is, and rotate the top part)
Aaron1912 3 years ago
did you use wax to make the coloring and sweeping effect too??!! :o I'm interested!!!

This is a liner, not a cruise ship. Cruise ships were painted white, black hull always a liner.

Partially true. Cruise ships sometimes make positioning cruises that are like crossings, doesn't make them ocean liners.
phoenix1985 2 years ago
Well my explanation was always how I understood the difference. Is there any other?

@phoenix1985 That explains why liners were beautiful.Present day cruise ship look like they have a hormonal imbalance.

@exeuroweenie Exactly. They have no shape, no style. Just blocks with a bow and stern stuck on.

Because we see a beautiful ship that means a fictional disaster. You don't see films like this aymore for this ship.
