Jeff Buckley was a diva, Rufus IS a true artist AND a diva. Jeff has a well TAMED voice, not like his father. Tim was the best singer EVER, a diamond, perfect, natural, the most handsome mammal that've walked on earth.

The man SOUNDS gay, that is the problem. It is clear that Jeff Buckley was possibly the only one that was able to make this song sound as it is supposed to. Writhing in dramatic passion and sensitivity. Not like this little slack jawed pretentious JB wannabe.
maybe sounds drunk? he just seems to slur. plus his tone seems a little scratchy or something. I guess that fits the song though- "a cold and broken Hallelujah."
I disagree with the people who hate Wainwright's version. I love it. He's one of my favorite dude vocalists (secretly wishing he were not gay). Art shouldn't be a contest.
Jeff Buckley did an awesome cover, but Leonard Cohen wrote it. Actually, he wrote many verses in addition to those in the Rufus Wainwright version and most other covers.
leonard cohen didnt write hallalujah its in the songbooks at church with out words -its been around forever and everyone has a version this one is me and terrys .
actually, hallelujah was written by leonard cohen, its not the same church song you see in the books. he actually had a notebook filled with different verses of the song, he was obsessed with it.
haha, right...I suppose the chorus -hallelujah- has been around forever but I'm pretty sure leonard cohen wrote the verses as I don't recall anything in the hymnals about tying people to chairs...but I'm not unitarian either so...
Thanks to you for turning me on to these other versions, man they are good. Rufus is good also, but you are correct in your assessment of these three. Thanks, Georgeann
I really want to hear a blackman (bass) to sing this with a pack full of energy, and a ton of people with the chorus energtically, this is why i prefer Rufus singing it, because he proves about half that power im talking about (all the others only provike a 1/4)
Rufus Wainwright-no, his voice does NOT sound bored. Especially live. He just played the Ann Arbor Folk Festival, and Lady, was his voice great. It's all furry, with edges. If that makes sense. The only critique I really have is that occasionally his piano drowns him out.
this song makes me cry. i like this version better than the leonard cohen one :/ i dunno..it mite b cos iv heard this one more..oh well both are amazing
