wish I would have seen this before I bought the peltor 6s.... Only spent 37 bucks though so not too bad. another thing is, on a hunt going through thick brush, i lost one of the little muff things on the peltor. Luckly peltor sent me a replacement.
Heh, I shoot at an indoor range mostly and the 23 decibel rating on my passives are most definitely not enough for the .40, .45's, and revolver rounds. Always, always have to double up.
Is that cut on the outside of the muff to accomadate a stock? I have passive Howard Leights which do a nice job but I get stock interference. I feel like I lost protection for no reason! Think I'm going to get these just because I ordered an 'evil roy' target and I want to make sure I can hear it (I double up with ear plugs & my passive muffs)
I'm glad you covered the dual vs single volume controls.
Even before I saw this review, the single volume control was one of the major points that made me choose the HL Impact Sports over the Peltors. There honestly really is no point for dual volume controls.
@bmx65 GunSport Pro GSP1. They're the only ones I know of and they are prohibitively expensive. I've looked into it too because I can't shoot rifle with headphones on, but 500 bucks is just too much to pay for that particular convenience
Thank you Nutnfacny! You're review has paid off as always! These things are AMAZING!!!!! I am a very picky and pragmatic buyer and I am very impressed. I got mine on Amazon with free shipping for $52.79. This is my first pair of Electronic Earpro and the sound amplification is an awesome feature. I felt like I was on some kind of drugs just walking around my yard listening to all the sounds. hahaha. The audio-in is decent quality. Nothing to sneeze at, but obviously not Studio quality either.
I have these and I have to say that I was very disappointed. I must have weird shaped ears or head because the cups are not deep enough to provide anything approaching a good seal.
Hey I might have this wrong but doesnt hearing work by the fine hairs in the inner ear pick up and transfer sound vibration and the brain then turns that into which ever sound it may be? If so then the muff acts to cut off the sound reaching the brain by countering the sound received but only after the sound has already steamrolled the fine inner ear hair. So it sounds like you are unnaffected by the gunshot but in reality your hearing is becoming damaged regardless?
Great video on such a practical item. Been using and enjoying these for a while, as well. Would be great to see something similar on eye protection, as well. Tons of options out there, and getting the opinion of another gearhound like nutn is always a good thing.
I have them and they are great. However i just upgraded to the Nacre QuietPro unit and I would have to say they are much better for shooting with a riflestock and they can run a radio.
Thanks for the review on these NUTN! I have been meaning to get a pair of electronic earmuffs for a while now. So i got myself some for my bday! I live in Cali and the closest range to me is an indoor 25yd range and when shooting my rifles they don't have a bench so we sit in a chair and the platform is then too high so the buttstock is always pushing into my Humungoid ;) Winchester earmuffs! I also where double protection though so it was ok when it .Thnx for the review!
I've had a pair of these for 6 months. They work just as described. I wanted to leave a comment to relay that I accidentally dropped these outside my truck when I was carrying my crap inside after work one day. That night we had a huge rain storm that poured almost all night. The next day when I went to leave for work, I see my head phones laying in a puddle of water in the grass. I took the batteries out, let them sit inside for around two weeks to dry and they still work perfectly!
Thank you for doing a vid on hearing protection. I enjoyed this vid very much and learned a lot about electronic hearing protection. I will be looking more into getting a set of electronic hearing protection in the very near future. Keep up the great work! Oh, yeah, I kinda of remember the 70's too....
I have had these for about 2 years now. I also have a set of in-ear $1000 protection that I use for matches. Between the two, I really love these because these cost me $50 2 years ago and they have been awesome at battery life. The in-ear $1000 ones are going to cost me a lot more in batteries. Obviously, I prefer the in-ear ones for running, but I use these for high caliber rifles with another set of plugs under them. Great review and hit all the points dead on Nutnfancy!!!
My best friend growing up in the seventies still has a peice of lead embedded in his forearm from when I shot him (accedentally) with my 5mm shereton pellet rifle. :0P I didn't realize it was so powerful at 10 pumps! About 40 yds. I think.

so glad you did a hearing protection review to focus attention this issue. I have slight hearing damage (can barely carry on a conversation in a crowded bar). even worse, tinnitus (ringing in your ears from hearing damage to the little hairs inside your ear)....it's hell on earth. And there's no going back. Thanks for emphasizing this. I do NRR 33 foamies inside NRR 30 earmuffs.
You know, I appreciate your vids, but just wonder how many times you're going to upload this vid Nut'n... I'm about ready to unsubscribe just due to the constant emails...
You mentioned that you've evaluated inexpensive eletronic earmuffs and would not recommend them unless it was known beforehand from a 'reliable source that they're good'. I was curious if the Caldwell emax low profile was one of the earmuffs you had tested. They run in the mid $20 range and I think they are rated at 23db. Luv the reviews...take care
I have these and really like them. I notice since I've got mine I see more and more of them.
@nutnfancy I have an idea for a video, You hit on suppressors the other day, how about great pistols to use cans on? FNP Tactical, HK USP tactical( i own this one) The new M&P FDE tactical and that big sexy metal Sig tactical in FDE.
I enjoyed Nutn's review, as always, but I'm considering unsubscibing temporarily in order to stop the email notifications on this video. Love your stuff Nutn, and I'll be back, but I've had at least 15 emails on this vid.
@Hutehund That's happening to me also, but not JUST Nutn's channel. I sub a LOT of channels and this one, "operationsmedia", "misesmedia" and "pondguru" and a couple of others keep sending me email notifications of the same vid upploads. I thought it was me(my acct) but it must be a youtube thing...weird
@Hutehund This is in your settings in the accounts pane in YT. change these settings under which events that you want receive an email. unsubing from nutn will not change anything because you will get them when you sub back if not changed
These muffs being reviewed actually have a fairly low hearing protection rating considering that NRR ratings (Noise Reduction Ratings) are on a logarithmic scale. I much prefer the highly capable NRR 33 Pro Tac muffs (plus earplugs) when it comes to protecting my hearing which can never recover after being damaged.
Let me first start off by saying this video is proof that Nutn and Veri listen to requests. I emailed Nutn explaining the importance of this review. Next thing I know he has a perfected table top review out for all to view. If your like me you bought these muffs because you saw the legend Mr.Nutn wearing them every shoot. LOL. But it is still nice to know all the details of this product and what they are capable of. A big thanks for responding to my table top request. Thanks again TNP.
Is it only me that has gotten at least one youtube email notification a day since this video was uploaded? I <3 Nutn's videos but I've already watched 3 times. How many more times does YT want me to see it? LOL Hello TNP.
@wolvee123 We haven't had any complaints about it other than your's, wolvee, but it doesn't surprise me at all...youtube has its monumentally goofy days! -- Veri
this video has been sent to my mailbox at least 6 times now. i know that a few other people have had the same issue. i don't think it has anything to do with Nutnfancy...just glitch with youtube.
@TyD59 He's been in the field with Keltec almost all weekend, so he's not working on this vid, BUT, if I'm not mistaken, he had a lot of trouble uploading this one. I'll ask him tonight when he gets home. -- Veri
I just purchased a Peltor 3m about 2 weeks ago and the selling point was that it had single push button controls for up/down and pwr. So everytime I turn it on its set to my hearing. It also has an input section for I think linking up headsets, not sure. I think the Peltor your showing might be an out dated set. The price for the newer Peltor was a bit high I thought and with ear plugs costing about 20cents its going to take a while before I feel like I got my moneys worth...lol NFP FAN
I picked these up probably 6-8 months ago. Was looking for a pair of "inexpensive" electronic muffs. I happened to notice you and PFI dude rolling with these in some of your vids. I assumed they would be too expensive but googled them and was amazed at the cost. I believe I picked em up at amazon for like 46 bucks. Been using them ever since with sanyo eneloops and they are fantastic. Glad to see you put this review out for everyone else to enjoy. Thanks for all your hard work!
Nice review. Been waiting for a review on these muffs for a while. I recently bought a pair Howard Leight LO F’s non electronic ear muffs. Nice design and comfortable. First time I used them, I decided to start off with a .22 hand gun. I’m glad that I did rather than one of my centerfire guns. It hurt my ears and I got a headache. I immediately went back to my 25 year old muffs for the remainder of that day. I had to stuff a bunch of cotton in them to be able to use them.
Just bought a set. My review so far. Phenomenal! 5 Stars. Thanks for the gear review. Appreciate it. This is definitely a high value product. Thanks again Nutn!
kicked the can after dark?????......nutnfancy rulz:)....any time i buy tactical i log in and make sure nutnfancy hast created a vid on it.....keep em coming my brutha!
The only issue in the two years I have had mine was when I frist bought the first set. There was an internal short on the ear muffs and never had any sound amplification. I returned them and got a new pair. No issues reported since.
I just picked one of these up from Academy Sports. I love these ear protectors! For the cost they are worth their wt in gold. At one point I was adjusting my sight and I heard a rustling sound, I looked to my right thinking some critter was foraging for food. I looked behind me and my partner was walking up on me from approx 75+ yds back! These work great for hunting. Sound will be picked up before my normal hearing would, allowing me to know somthing may be out there.
I have been running these muffs for probably 2 1/2 years now...maybe more. Both the first pair I had as well as a friend's broke the very tiny wires going from from side to the other. This was with much, but not hard use. They were some of the first sold so. I was impressed enough with value that I have purchased a few more pairs. I mentioned it to the CEO of the company a few SHOT Shows ago. Perhaps they have beefed them up, but they are a very good value. I can actually shoulder a rifle.
I agree with everything you have said about these, nutnfancy. These are great earmuffs for shooting, but I have tried wearing these to work and found they are not the best for working around airplanes. They're not terrific at blocking high-frequency jet noise, and the electronic amplification tends to pickup a lot of RF interference in the airport environment. That's kind of a bummer, but otherwise I love them!
Great review! I myself did alot of shooting without hearing protection in the past and now have some hearing lost in my left ear. I also have been using Howard Lite protection for about 2 years. Just a few weeks ago my Otolaryngologists trun me onto the Surefire earpro protection and I have been loving it.
Wouldn't you just be constantly fiddling with knobs as you moved around the source of your sound or it around you? I could see the use when stationary, but how often do we work in a stationary world for very long?
Also, do you think that twofold jump in price for the Peltor Tactical Sports is justifiable? I like that they turn off after two hours rather than four. Are they single volume adjustment or dual?
I have been looking to try some electronic muffs, but have been hesitant to buy any because no one has anything good to say about what they have. Maybe they just have bought the $30 ones. Anyhow since before this review I have never heard anything good I didn't want to waste money on a gamble. Thank you for this review I think I will try some of these out.
I have a pair of these, and I shoot 5.56 with them and have never for a moment thought that they were not stopping enough sound. I leave mine cranked all the way up and never get feedback. I also have some Peltor Shotgunner non-electronic muffs, and these are far more comfortable (I still keep those in my bag though, in case I take someone to the range). I really like the fact that I can hear commands from range officers and I can easily converse with fellow shooters.
I spent two bucks for 8 pair of earplugs. I love TNP but I think he's taking himself just a little too seriously on this one. I'm not hating though. I really like everything else.
Hey do any of you guys know anything about wearing hearing protection while Hunting? Is this nessasary? thank you for your time and great videos NUTN.
I just started watching your reviews a few months ago and they are excellent. I just pulled the trigger on these muffs. I am not too happy with the version i currently have. They hit the stock! I looked at other reviews and they concur with your POU. Glad to be a member of TNP!
an other great review Nutin , ive been using peltor "tactical sport" muffs for a couple years and would say they are an other good option but i think they are more expensive at least they were when i bought them a couple years ago up here in canada. they have a lot of the same features . any how thanks so much for what you do , i love all your videos and appreciate so much the time you put into them. take care
The AUX port on these is awesome if you're shooting indoors and you're trying to hear the beep of your competition timer, as sometimes you can't hear the beep at all if there are alot of people shooting on the range
I have these and agree with nutnfancy, for the price they really do have are worth it, plus they only use 2 AA batteries, were as some others have to use 4. Good value!!!
Oh yes the 70s . . I remember working for a truck manufacturer in my summer holidays. We were bending and cutting big steel plates and it was terribly loud. I was the only one wearing ear muffs and everybody was making fun of me, but when I went back, years later, to pick up some metal, they all wore them . . probably to late.
I like the dual volume control on the Pro Ears because at times in the deer stand or wherever, the wind will be bearing down on one ear and loadly reverberating....you can turn that ear down some. Anyway, mine were not $50 muffs, they were a lot more, but very sensitive to hear deer moving in the woods. They have held up well in the 10 years I've had them. Wish they had AA or AAA, but no dice. The batteries last a long time though.
Thanks for this video. I have been looking for good ear protection for a while. Just ordered a pair. Also, there is a direct correlation between the amount of time I watch your videos and the amount of money I spend.
You and I clearly grew up at the same time. Riding in the back of pick up trucks, bb gun wars (yes we were smart enough to wear ski goggles) and yes shoot without hearing protection. We didn' t know any better. As a hunter and particularly a shotgunner, my hearing isn't what it could. Now, I've been wearing hearing protection for 15-20 years....off and on and always when shooting for at least 10. I've been using the Pro Ears Stalker which are great to hear deer moving through the woods.
and still save your ears. I have not left for the dove field, duck or goose blind, tree stand or just out shooting without them in 10 years. My ears are better than my Dad's and old brother's at least. We all know now that shooting hurts our hearing so no excuses anymore!
I have been a view for some time and was thinking of just this topic and was looking at your old videos to find one. I was about to send you a message/request for this topic. Either which past video to view and/or a request to make a video for hearing protection. Thank you for yet another outstanding video and reading my mind.
I have the Howard Light L3. They are great. I wear the double hearing protection when I am at the range. I had a pair of the other eletironc ear muffs. Yea, they sucked. It totally turned my off to eletronice earmuffs. After seeing this vid, I am re-thinking that. I like the Howard Light brand of earmuff. They are pretty comffy. I am going to have to try the Howard Light eletronc ones out. Sorry for the spelling erros. Thanks for the great vids! Thanks for the heads up on the earmuffs
nunt why are you wearing them so? I mean you wearing the right side on the left, and the left side on the right? Do you do that you could hear better what's behind your or something?
Stoked for the BOLT GUN REVIEWS!!!! please tell me that they are on the way. saw some in the mix. Thanks as well for keeping up with the gear reviews.
Thanks Nutn...I was one of many who requested a video on this...I have a pair of Radians Pro-Amps that I love...the ones you reviewed would be a great addition to my range bag for those that I take shooting who don't regularly go and thus don't have their own gear.
I love these ear muffs... super comfortable, lightweight and effective! I know nutn keeps saying that he turned up the volume all the way, I honestly find that halfway is plenty, and it can actually amplify many ambient sounds (you feel very aware of your surroundings), but is great at cutting out the gunfire...
im an Artillery guy buy trade and yeah... hearing is an issue for me now .. it sucks but i protect my ears as much as i possibly can these days

Those look like a few good ones to start w/.

Got yet another Youtube video notification on this one today.
I hate to say it, but I'm going to have to unsubscribe. I'll wait a day and resubscribe and see if that fixes it.

I had to stuff a bunch of cotton in them to be able to use them.
gapster46 11 months ago
Definitely 5 stars for value. They are 75-80% of my MSA Sordin's for like 1/6 the cost.

The only issue in the two years I have had mine was when I frist bought the first set. There was an internal short on the ear muffs and never had any sound amplification. I returned them and got a new pair. No issues reported since.
MrTactikewl 11 months ago
Hey Nutn, the word is SIGNAL, not "single". SIG-NAL.
SIG, like the gun. Followed by "nal", like uh, "nal".
Come on man! Going way back to your flight vest review you were saying it wrong.
Love you btw. In a cool, dude way of course.
K4LA55 11 months ago
I just picked one of these up from Academy Sports. I love these ear protectors! For the cost they are worth their wt in gold. At one point I was adjusting my sight and I heard a rustling sound, I looked to my right thinking some critter was foraging for food. I looked behind me and my partner was walking up on me from approx 75+ yds back! These work great for hunting. Sound will be picked up before my normal hearing would, allowing me to know somthing may be out there.
jenkster09 11 months ago
I have been running these muffs for probably 2 1/2 years now...maybe more. Both the first pair I had as well as a friend's broke the very tiny wires going from from side to the other. This was with much, but not hard use. They were some of the first sold so. I was impressed enough with value that I have purchased a few more pairs. I mentioned it to the CEO of the company a few SHOT Shows ago. Perhaps they have beefed them up, but they are a very good value. I can actually shoulder a rifle.
noxspector 11 months ago
I agree with everything you have said about these, nutnfancy. These are great earmuffs for shooting, but I have tried wearing these to work and found they are not the best for working around airplanes. They're not terrific at blocking high-frequency jet noise, and the electronic amplification tends to pickup a lot of RF interference in the airport environment. That's kind of a bummer, but otherwise I love them!
MileHigh537 11 months ago
Great review! I myself did alot of shooting without hearing protection in the past and now have some hearing lost in my left ear. I also have been using Howard Lite protection for about 2 years. Just a few weeks ago my Otolaryngologists trun me onto the Surefire earpro protection and I have been loving it.

@GBU431
Also, lol at "fiddling with knobs"
MrChompenstein 11 months ago
good review Nutn, I like mine a lot. I would like to see how much active NR and how much passive instead of publishing the single number.
When I first got mine I was getting bad interference, later figured out it was my cell phone!!

FreindlyMantis 11 months ago
Now would those also be ideal for the indoor range? Sorry have to ask the dumb question, but the squeaky wheel gets oiled right, lol.

I really like the fact that I can hear commands from range officers and I can easily converse with fellow shooters.

an other great review Nutin , ive been using peltor "tactical sport" muffs for a couple years and would say they are an other good option but i think they are more expensive at least they were when i bought them a couple years ago up here in canada. they have a lot of the same features . any how thanks so much for what you do , i love all your videos and appreciate so much the time you put into them.

Nice review!

TigerRagFishingTeam 11 months ago
Thanks for this video. I have been looking for good ear protection for a while. Just ordered a pair. Also, there is a direct correlation between the amount of time I watch your videos and the amount of money I spend.
bdkirwan 11 months ago
You and I clearly grew up at the same time. Riding in the back of pick up trucks, bb gun wars (yes we were smart enough to wear ski goggles) and yes shoot without hearing protection. We didn' t know any better. As a hunter and particularly a shotgunner, my hearing isn't what it could. Now, I've been wearing hearing protection for 15-20 years....off and on and always when shooting for at least 10. I've been using the Pro Ears Stalker which are great to hear deer moving through the woods.
TigerRagFishingTeam 11 months ago
@TigerRagFishingTeam
and still save your ears. I have not left for the dove field, duck or goose blind, tree stand or just out shooting without them in 10 years. My ears are better than my Dad's and old brother's at least. We all know now that shooting hurts our hearing so no excuses anymore!
TigerRagFishingTeam 11 months ago
