the first time I heard it was by randy newman. it brought tears to my eyes. powerful lyrics touches the heart immediately. aaron's version speaks lo the heart also...
I love both Randy and Aaron the both are awesome singing this song. I`m born and raised in Louisiana we need a song like this to get pass the floods .....
Contrary to the previous comment, The flooding had nothing ot do with the River - this was a man-made disaster.
The historical marker erected next to the 17th street canal levee that broke reads ~ .... in January, 2008, Federal Judge Duval placed the blame for the floodwall's collapse squarely on the shoulders of the US Army Corps of Engineers....
Dont't know if the link will show in posting but the photo of the marker is: levees.org/2/wp-content/uploads/2009/08/P82300901.JPG
My house is 80 years old. It never had a drop of water in it. The drainage canal levees broke (previously wide berm levees 'improved' by Corps of engineers to "I" wall levees). My flooding was not caused by storm surge from the gulf - but rather, the water in Lake Pontchartrain churned up & went right under that "I" wall & that levee toppled into the canal itself as it was undermined by the insufficient foundation (mud only). After 80 dry years, my house had 12' water in it for over 3 weeks.
until we learn to stop building homes of a certain type on rivers, this is going to happen, river flood, my father and his wife have a house on a river in TX, i can't understand this, but that's the way it is as far as man loves the water an wants to live right on top of it.
@vengefall i know all of this, i am just saying if you love the water, and i am not saying i do not, you also have to know that, in reality, there will eventually be disaster connected with it. i know we need the rivers!
i was in a group home and the program we went to during the morning alot of my friends there were katrina survivors and its sad to see a hurricane wipe out that town. i also had a friend and her fam was from there what a horrible tradgedy. I hope the flood in the southern us doesnt wipe them out god bless you guys i hope everything goes well and doesnt wash you guys out. way to go aaron way to put some soul in that song.
Louisian should become as foreign nation and then we can get foreign aid and have the best levee system in the world. Once again we are going to be under water and people will suffer. The people of Louisiana are survivors and they are strong and will survive the forces of nature and the federal government.
God Bless my beloved Louisiana. As the water washes down the great Mississip from the Nawth much like the floods of 1927, may My Buddy protect us all during the May, 2011 floods that are heading towards the Streets of Evangeline.
This is such a true song,so many of us has been washed away .Our birth place is gone we can never get it back,I can never go home again it has been truely been washed away
Only someone with a deep love for New Orleans and her people could write such a beautiful and touching song. Thank you Randy Newman. Thank you to Aaron Neville for the most passionate version. I can't stop listening!!
The storm was a tragedy of nature. The lack of preparedness for evacuations was a sin by the elected officals of the city and the state. Did anyone learn anything? Will it be different next time? I hope so, I have my doubts. This human-faulted part of the tragedy was foisted upon the people of SE Texas. We are still paying the price on the backs of Hurricanes Rita and Ike. We had pandhandlers on the streets of our little town here in Texas, about 200 miles away from New Orleans within 48 hours.
@jnvyoral - If you're talking about the Katrina, the hurricane did little damage - could have been repaired quickly. The flooding and destruction of the city was caused by the levees breaking. The levees are under the control of the federal government as are numerous levees across the United States. The US Army Corp of Engineers (while hiring private contractors) makes the decisions. THEY are responsible. As far as the river flood of 1927-due to Coolidge & what he did up north to the river.
@SDCD1000 The poor quality of the levees in New Orleans is NOT my point here. Knowing the problem existed, the politicians and other responsible parties in the city failed to have an adequate plan in place to evacuate the people who needed help. There were so many people who blamed everyone but their city and state government for lack of a plan. So many people died because of it. It didn't have to happen!
Amen to all x what a wonderful song, words, voice - like a hymn to all those affected x blues, soul, jazz, eatyour heart out - love this song xxx xxx xxx
Pure class, now this is a proper record. Thanks to Randy and Aaron. This reminds me of Ray Charles at his best ,no higher compliment can I give it.Pax to all from 73 soulboy.Xxx.
I cannot get over the incredible set of pipes and voice of Aaron Neville. The guy thrills me even if he grumbles on a record. I would love to meet him one day..>!!!
@glds45 were you feeling important while you were lucid enough to comment ? Your fear and ignorance has at least aroused you to naming calling status on a comment. Whoopee.Good ol' Paranoia ? How little babel fish does that work? Here’s help, never eat the pages of the mind candy manifesto. Peace
Think about this as you listen to this voice of a harp, being. Somebody has been messing with Louisiana a long freaking time and it continues to this very day! Maybe it’s time, we should stand up together and ask the question, who and why?
Wonderful song with so much meaning. Aaron is a wonderful talent but just comes off better when Randy does it.

Again, The River did not flood New Orleans - Lake Pontchartrain did.
The French Quarter which lies along the River front is one of the only ares of New Orleans that DID NOT flood.
