  • U2 and Bono have to be great, otherwise some people wouldn't feel the need to disparage them so often.

This song does what other bands' songs can't and don't: reaches beneath the superficial into the soul.

  • why would he make his donations public? and if he did, people like the kellster would criticize him for it saying "what does he want, a medal?"

What you will find if you look for it is quote after quote from other band members about the amount of time he devotes to charitable works and his time away from the band.

It would be a lot easier to stick to being a rock star and use your time away from the band to relax a blow your money on a beach somewhere.

  • U2 are THE MOST OVERRATE BAND IN HISTORY!!

  • Fine, that's your own opinion. But it's not the truth.

The fact is that they are one of the greatest rock band in history if not the greatest yet.

They have been great from late '80s and they still make awesome music 20+ years later. Tell me which rock band in history is capable of that feat. Not even the Beatles.

  • please dont compare them with The Beatles. What they did in 8 years is more than 30 years of U2 or any other band.

And why do you say U2 is great from the late 80's. Some of their most successful, influential and definitely their most inspired songs are from 1980-1985 period.

  • They began to gain mainstream popularity with their 1987 'Joshua Tree' album. That's what I meant when I stated that they have been great from late '80s. All my previous comments were directed towards gilberto1988 who posted that U2 are the most overrated band...I didn't mean to compare them to the Beatles. I merely pointed out the fact that not even the Beatles were capable of making great music for such a long period of time and that in itself was an awesome achievment. You missed my point.

  • well, mainstream popularity means nothing. quality counts, and based on quality I more or less have to agree with Gilberto1988 as far as last 10 years (or 3 albums) are concerned. They might have won all their Grammy's with songs like Vertigo and Beautiful day etc. but imo these songs cant touch their 80s and 90s sound. On Beatles: of course they were not capable to make great music over same long period. But in their 8 years, 99% was pure class. U2 is nowhere near, esp. the last decade: 20%?

  • Wow, you are so biased!! Okay you are a Beatles fan, but you don't need to put down U2, man!! Most critics agreed that the last 3 U2 albums in the last 10 years are quality stuff indeed!! You have no idea of what you were yapping. The recent U2 album is pure class. Rolling Stones rated "Moment of Surrender" as the best rock song of the year!!

You are full of it, dude!!

    Just shut the fuck up!!

  • sure im a beatles fan, im also a big U2 fan, think ive seen them about 40 times. But the last 3 albums are mediocre imo, sorry. Nothing new, and sorry I dont need Rolling Stone magazine to tell me what the best song is. Of course they say U2, cause U2 on the cover sells more magazines. they should have said this about U2 in 1983 with eg. Bloody Sunday. Best rock song? it doesnt even rock!

btw: your agressive tone doesnt really fit a U2 fan. keep following the critics, i guess you need that.

  • Say what you will, dude. Sure you know music more than the pundits of RS. It's no sense talking with you. Can't take my words, then you can go screw yourself. Don't really think that you are a true U2 fan either. Dude, you don't need to be a pussy in order to be a U2 fan. U2 fans are all walks of life..... You are so naive!!

I'm also a Pearl Jam fan, so I talk the way I do. I love grunge too. I don't apologize......

  • yeah dude, screw, grunge, pussy, heavy, i dont apologize, fuck, naive, all walks of life, dude, talk the way i do cause im a PearlJam fan...dude.

Get your latest U2 acquisition, play your Moment of Surrender and headbang the last few brain cells out of your mongoloid face.

PearlJam fan who loves grunge too?!

Is that something like a JoyDivision or U2 fan who likes post-punk? Not in your world, I guess. You prefer cheesy-stadium ballad U2 with "reflective, meaningful lyrics". Im so touched...

  • You called yourself a U2 Fan??

You are a fucking joke, asshole!!

    FUCK YOU!!

    GO TO HELL!!

  • You are a fucking faggot!!

  • Are these new U2 lyrics? from the upcoming album? highly innovating stuff, dude.

i called myself a U2 fan? yes, in fact the past tense is correctly used by you: called.

Fucking Joke? No, try Killing Joke, they still rock.

Jesus can you take the time

To throw a drowning man a line

    Peace on Earth

Now get your lighter and singalong with the U2 gospel-hour.

At least I know I saw them in better shape. For me the memories, for you just some available old footage on YouTube. How sad.

  • Hey, you moron,,,,I watched U2 back in 1983 when they played one of their first few U.S. gigs in Boston's The Paradise......I have all the fucking memories, mind you fucker!!

I know them all too well and U2 still rocks after all these fucking years.....From "BOY" to "NLOTH", they stand the test of time and then some.....

Their music have evolved and matured and they still rock. Hey, if you don't like their current style, then just FUCK OFF and stop yapping.

  • You said "Moment of Surrender" cheesy ballad, your fave Beatles also wrote and sang many such cheesy ballads. I can name just a few, "Yesterday", "Let it be" and more......All rock bands do ballads.

    You are a fucking IDIOT!!

  • You sacrastic bastard,

"Bad", "Kite", "Moment of Surrender".......they are all fucking powerful ballads by the greatest rock band in history, U2.

    Rock on, U2!!

  • *sarcastic, typo

  • this stadium is kool

  • Go watch Live 8. Listen to his speech. This was in 2005. He cares about the poor and those who are sick. He donates, you dont know what you are saying. U2 FOREVER!

  • Go get a life and stop watching susccesful people. Millions around the world cant be wrong. so go watch something else dont put here your frustration and shitty life you might have.

  • Oh he is successful. I am one of the main reasons he is successful. I followed U2 from the beginning. But there are millions of people like me who hate U2 now. For they are sellouts and hypocrites. The music now sucks too. The only reasons ppl go to see them now is for the old songs. The pathetic new album sales prove that.

Bono is a phony and hypocrite and this is coming from a person who used to respect him but no more. Instead of promoting him I now devote my time to bashing him, sellout

  • You are retarded. Shut up, you dont know what you are saying! Their new album is one of the best if not the best. The 360 Tour has the most inovative stage ever! Oh and you say Bono doesnt care? You know how much money he donates? U2 are legends now and before. They still have it. The new songs are as good as the old, even though the old songs are the main thing of them! So shut up you are not a true U2 fan. OH do you know how old I am? 16. Weird uh? A teenager liking this kind of music.

  • Innovative stage? HA HA Now u have to compliment them on the fucking stage and not the songs!!!

How's all those grammy nominations? Oh wait, they got one token nomination!! HA HA How's all those hit songs Bono expected? Oh wait that did not happen either.

When they have to do Letterman 5 night s straight, Good Morning America, free internet and radio shows, every talk show they could get booked on and they still couldn't sell this crap. Good Morning America=WASHED UP

  • Show me one article on Bono that demonstrates he donates significantly his money. In a 30 year career u will find NOTHING! But i can show you articles of him hiding his money in tax shelters, buying mansions, jets, apartments and investing in enterprises to increase his wealth.

The guy is a phony and you know it.

  • @kellykinsel How is he a phony? He provides us with the greatest music ever. They are the best band of all time. and the grammy nominations are BS. today music is dumb and they dont give credit for legendary bands such as U2! They still have the most grammy nominations EVER! 22. And their new album was album of the year and Moment of Surrender song of the year, so how can you say their new album is crap?? I dont understand!

  • WE know? who are we ? the millions around the world who admire this group? haha always are people who envy the susccessful life of others...anyway...

  • the snl verison of this song was the best

  • I thought so too until he messed up the lyrics.

  • Wonderful song, i love that version from Shefield.

  • Such a great song - why wasn't Adam's bass as prominent in this version though? Is it really that difficult to do it live?

  • No- just a crappy mix job by whoever was on the board.

  • It's partly a mixing decision... What works in the mix on a record where you have control over all the sounds doesn't necessarily work live where you never know what's going to happen.

  • he is awesome we were there

  • i love this song, someday, I will be in u2's concert

  • @edrafa2

you should want to, its an amazing experience

  • Marvajs2..,Thanx..,díky Brácho... ,summer 09.....,my víme!!!!

  • Does anyone know when we'll find out who's opening for them next leg?

  • Istinmo....ty víš....a já děkuju za nejkrásnější chvíle mého života....tahle skladba...NO COMENT!!!

  • Best song of 2000s!

This song was voted best song of 2009 by many publications like RollingStones, NME, Time etc.

Heck, when you have Metallica voting for this song as the "Best Song of the Decade" on time magazine, you know it is a very special song!

  • <3 U2!!!!!!

  • this is amazing! an amazing performance! a great song!

  • What a masterpiece U2 made!! Just amazing!

Can't wait for the U2 360º Tour on October 3rd in Portugal!!!

  • Una de las mejores canciones de todos los tiempos de u2.

  • with or without you in the 80's...

    one in the 90's...

moment of surrender in the 00's...

  • Amen to that. The greatest songs of all time

  • I wonder what's coming for the 10's

  • U2 FOREVER :) <3

  • best song 4ever!

  • Contagem Regressiva.. U2 no Brasil 2010!!!

  • Simplesmente fantástico. Um Feliz Natal para todos. From Portugal.

  • ♥ I think one of the best song ever ♥

  • stupenda

  • ther's no words to describe this fuckin incredible song !!!!!

  • it's a soul thing.

  • A surreal moment at the Rose Bowl. It left quite an impression in my subpar memory;)

  • The biggest and best best on the planet.

And have been for years and years. and will be anytime they want to be. Coldplay, greenday etc can pretend all they like, but will they sell out stadiums after 30 years? NO !

  • RollingStone song of 2009 - Moment of Surrender. Worthy choice but I still think 'Breathe' is better...

  • They've included some indeed excellent albums of the top 100 of the decade. But please, don't take their decisive accolades and polls seriously. The majority of their decisions are made based off popularily, commercialism and politics. They put Nirvana #17 on the top 100 greatest artists of all time in front of artists like Radiohead, Nine Inch Nails, The Who, U2 and MICHAEL JACKSON!!!!!! Anyone who considers Nirvana more of an influence than Michael Jackson is a fuckin' disgrace!!

  • Oh Oh Ohhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh

  • Юту, поздрави от Българската диаспора в Исландия! Дръжте фронта!

  • and your remark on U2 albums only include 2-3 great songs, and the rest is mediocre at best... whats that all about?? Boy, War, TUF, Joshua, Achtung Baby? really? only 2-3 songs. So in almost 30 years of U2 they only wrote about 25 great songs? and according to you some of their best is on the last 2 albums. So that leaves, lets say, 17 songs up to year 2000. I wonder why youre so eager to defend them then. strange U2 fans nowadays....

  • the 80000 only refers to RoseBowl capacity, mr. WiseGuy. Repeating the critics? i never read critics on their last album, i could figure out myself that this was over-repeated shite. i know more about u2 than at least 80-90% of critics. and i never said that commercial success means less quality, where did i say that? i think all the bands/names i gave you sold at least a few million albums.

  • and i know that you did not say this is their best ballad, that part was for guipinsan.

but about your part, really dont get your rediscover what i liked in the past comment. i like old and new music, i even like a lot of cliche bands (eg. Ramones) but i find it hard to see that such a talented, always innovating band has become a soulless copymachine in the last decade. Listen to Tomorrow from October, thats Bono. this is just a bad dream.

  • Wrong! No Line On The Horizon is a tight album of great anthems, and is the launching pad for another 10 to 15 years of great U2.

Are you listening to the words? how can you call this soulless? you're a complete nimrod!

you have visibility, but no vision.

  • all the singles from Joshua and even some songs from atomic Bomb? is that all you can come up with. i see, the commercial U2 fan. if 80000 people use a lighter, it must be good. whats not cliche? jack white is not, radiohead is not. nick cave is not. josh homme is not. pharrell williams not. beatles were not. u2 was not but they sure are now. like radiohead says: no surprises

  • if i'm just another sheep in the herd then who are you? you are just another guy who likes to repeat what the critics say. Just because the mass likes a song that doesnt mean its quality is any less than some songs that were written by some obscure band whos so desperate to show how musically sophisticated they are and act like they dont care what the public thinks, yet will do anything for more fame but the sad truth is, they can't.

  • yeah that guy Rayruit obviously doesn't ever get laid. And who doesn't like Radiohead. What a cliche thing to say. Why is America full of idiots?

Radiohead ows a lot of there sound to U2... Along with just about every other guitar/ambient rock band after 1987. excluding the grunge scene of course.

  • I'm not saying Radiohead or the beatles are obscure bands but by judging from your words you are def one of those people. And let's face it, everyone, and you dont have to be a guy whos been following them for 27 years to know this, knows that each U2 album has only two or three brilliant tracks and the rest are mediocre at best. In that sense HTDAAB was a brilliant album. All the tracks in that album are above average even on U2 standard. theres a reason why 80000 people and more like the album

  • And lastly, I like how you are so arrogant enough to boldly suggest that you are better than 80000 people although HTDAAB were sold much more than 80000 copies. As if we dont have enough critics who are so stupid enough to convince themselves that they know better than the public.

  • Why are you fucking writing this here. Why don't you private message each other so you can cyberfuck while you're at it, dipshits.

  • did you just say that the beatles were not cliche?!?!! Their name is the beatles! as in a beat and a bug. the beatles, that's their name, and it's horribly cliche.

I agree with the other bands you mentioned tho... but not Radiohead, c'mon. they are so cliche at this point. and not by their own fault either. the masses made it cliche, the same thing that happened to U2. and RH's real test will come 20 years from now. U2 has done it for so long you can't even compare RH to U2 yet.

  • awesome!! sea shepherd friend

  • the only thing that grows on me is the feeling that i have to throw up. Best ballad since Running... haha, try Love is Blindness from ZooTv, or Stay, or Velvet Dress, or even One. But this is like going to church, cliché nothingness. TUF not one of their best?? name me five better songs.

  • give me something that isnt a cliche. cliche nothingness? a cliche is a cliche because it's true. you want originality but there is none. all you do is rediscover what you liked in the past and call it refreshing or innovative. And like I said those songs you mentioned are great songs but not the best. all the singles from the Joshua Tree and even some of the individual songs from HTDAAB are better than the songs you mentioned barring One though I'd not say this song is their best ballad.

  • my moment of surrender, finally after 27 years i lost them. This is too much for me, its terrible. Really dont see how someone can say its their best or one of their best songs. Pls go to your Cd player, play Gloria live or The Unforgettable Fire, Into the Heart, Acrobat or Please from Popheart EP. If you dont hear a difference, go to a doctor cause you probally suffer from bad taste. This is so sad to hear from one of the finest bands ever.

  • i must disagree. this is one of their best songs. when i first heard the album i thought it was awful, but after some time i started to realize how amazing and profound this song is. the best u2's ballad since running to standstill. the rest of the album might be rubbish, but this is u2 at it's finest

  • If you are saying that Bono does not sound as awesome as his old days, then i agree. His voice sounds tired after numerous gigs and he is almost 50 years old so its understandable. But if you are saying this song sucks then i disagree. this album doesnt have a captivating track i agree but its songs grow on to you, including this song. and as for the songs you mentioned, they are good but they are certainly not their best songs.

  • whenever I drive through a big city at night like Calgary or Edmonton or Vancouver I blast this in my car and I dont know how to describe how I feel but it feels soothing like everything is gonna be ok and as cheesy as it sounds it makes the b ig citys more enjoyable

  • i still dont understand why they havent released this as a single yet??

  • i agree, this is one of the best songs they have ever written

  • 3:07

    ~That is sweet.

  • i say fuck all the nay-sayers that say that this new album isn't that good. i say "No Line On The Horizon" is their best album since "Autching Baby" LONG LIVE THE MIGHTY U2!!!!

  • uhm, i think pop is better, really... no line is good but it is a bit banal sometimes (I'll go crazy, stand up comedy), while pop is the most original album they have ever made... but, no doubt, no line is much better than ATYCLB and HTDAAB

  • Bono was and will be Blessed by God , 'cause since he started U2's lagacy he alwyas look up to those are in need of love or even to be here in this world!!!

  • The live version is great. I think this song is one of the best songs of the album.

  • I just ordered tickets to both of their shows in Anaheim California on June 7,and June 7 2010

  • why did they not play the full version live?

  • exactly! full version is really amazing - i miss it very much. regards

  • bono is so beautifulll :)

  • This seriously should of been their first single... that boots song i don't like soo much

  • it´s amazing!!

i love U2 and you need come to Brazil too in several citys here.

  • Another indication of Bonos existential beingthis time of realization and letting go of the fake subordinate love - something we spend time proving and doing reckless things to prove - that we have succumbed to fear. We now realize instead, we create our own love, our own meaning.

  • And now, we no longer need to prove, no need to worry, no need to have guilt. It is what it is and we can respond and make it mean something to us. The fire is within us to manifest and not there to remind us of unworthiness. Vision over visibility

  • Simply the best.

  • Does anyone know where the piece pf text comes from that Bono "raps" at the end?

  • I am pretty sure he is just being inspired and making it up in the moment based on what he is feeling...

  • Thanks for posting. U2 official!!!!!!!!

This is my favorite song next to with or without you

  • god, I wish I could be there..some says u2 are overrated and stuff...but when you look, on the whole way they've went...you must understand the broken voice and others vices, but who cares!! Besides those strong lyrics...I'm wordless..U2 rock!

  • @lady100m you are so right U2 is not overrated they still got it and they are pushing 50

U2 is one the top 5 favorite band's for me

and i was fortunate enough to see them when they came to phoenix arizona... and this ballad is my favorite U2 ballad next to with or without you. I know what this song is about but that's what bono wrote the lyrics about.. and i have a differnt interpretation of the lyrics though i am only almost 16 this song has a lot of meaning to me

  • "Maior e melhor banda de rock de todos os tempos"

  • They've got an autocue with the lyrics!

  • When i die i hope they play this at my funeral..Some songs and words are forever...cbono...God bless you all friends..Love the one who holds your hand and soul..Blessings..me

  • 6,22sec Please... is there anybody who know what he talking about? Please writting this sentence what he sad.

  • genial, una gran cancion

queria saber si van a venir a chile!

  • I'm so gutted my folks made us leave during this song to avoid getting stuck in traffic in Sheffield. This kind of makes up for it I guess.

Awesome song!!!!! Reminiscent of their 80's ballads like "Bad".

  • at then end Bono says: Life is short, but its the longest thing you'll ever do. The worse, the curse, is that your dreams came true.

God is a mirror in which each man sees himself. Hell is a place where you don't need any help. When I first met you, your face was like snow.

Wherever I went, you...you wanted to go. Your face - your grace - your lipstick case - your case that you put it down - eight seventeen on the ground - your faith in a clown...don't leave me now...don't leave me now....

  • age seventeen'

  • IMHO he is definitely saying "eight seventeen" - not "age seventeen" - sometimes what seems to make more logical sense is not actually what is being said...

  • It doesnt really matter, but it IS 'age' :)

Not even in 'stream of conciousness' would 'eight' make sence.

    'Age' does make sence.

  • eight seventeen could be referring to a date, as in August 17 - as in flying somewhere on august 17 and putting your "case" as in suitcase on the ground - I guess the man himself is the only one who knows for sure, but everyone is entitled to their own opinion. Peace. :@)

  • Best night of my life.

  • Awesome!!!i would like to dedicate this song to my father!!!he also give it up few years ago!!!!thnks...................u2 fan ROMANIA

  • Bono sings with so much.. I can't explain, But this is such a beautiful song!! I have to crie when Bono sings it so beautiful, with so much emotions!!

  • woulda loved to see this one with a long haired Bono ala Joshua Tree !!! ha !!

  • what is he saying at the end of the song, another of his brilliant mid-song rants??

  • Comment removed

  • that thing Bono keeps doing with his arm...he does it during every heroin related song: running to stand still, unknown caller, moment of surrender... is that something as part of the act, or is it something with his arm? i would think its for the show, but i keep seeing him do it outside the heroin songs. any thoughts?

  • After reading your comment, I noticed he does the arm thing as he sings, "I was speeding through the subway."

I hadn't thought of another definition of "speeding" until I read your post.

    Interesting.

  • well, i think its that whole '7' towers dublin drug problem going back 20yrs ago?? but being him , now on a world scale, maybe he is talking about that, im probably way off, but being an aussie, ill have lash and assume its right??!!..if not , oh well, does it matter, fucking brilliant to watch.

  • Comment removed

  • "God is a mirror in which every man sees himself" nice!

  • see explaining it like that is a good way to say it phatbrady but some ppl just say "they suck" which is just really stupid thing to say cuz obviously they don't cuz look where they are so yeah good way of sayin that but yeah im a fan of them so ROCK ON U2!!!!!!

  • They definitely have a lot of talent individually.

    Even I wouldn't deny that.

I should've explained myself better with my first comment I think.

  • it looked lovely too

the black eyed peas did it to when they opened up but there wasnt as many people participating

  • Wow, you're right, yes the Black Eyed Peas did it too! Thanks for the reminder!

And I thought it was pretty impressive then, too...

  • 0:09 - "Wherever you're watching in the world, we're going to turn the Rose Bowl into the Milky Way."

    Lovely.

  • It sure rocked sista!!! I still relive it everytime I watch any footage from it! Can you say this is one of the best concerts you've evar seen??? :)

  • Yes, I can say that easily!

  • When I first heard Moment of Surrender, it clicked with me instantly. I wondered if it wasn't some old standard that U2 was covering.

But, it is a U2 original.

It's not an old song. I guess it's just a song from an old soul.

I was at the Rose Bowl concert. I remember how overwhelmed I was, when Bono said they were closing with THIS song...

  • how long to sing this song..................

  • La colonna sonora delle mie nozze!! Fantastica...

  • It was debated that this perhaps wasn't the best song to end the show but I disagree. Also seen it in Foxboro this year, as well as Dublin (x3 nights), Wembley (x2) and Giants Stadium NJ/NY. Looking forward in seeing them again in Munich, Paris, Toronto, Chicago & Philidelpia next year.

  • Ouch! Lost his voice there... Yes this is the best song on the latest album.

Saw it at Foxborough/ Gillette Stadium.

  • when they sang it in Poland,i cried my eyes out...I love them so much !

  • I hope I get to see U2 live one day!! Love seeing all the lights and the song is great too!!

  • surrender..yes!!!!

  • right now, my favorite song of the last album.

  • amazing song....amazing performance!!!!!

  • my body now a begging bowl, begging to get back, begging to get back to my heart AND TO THE RHYTHM OF MY SOUL!!!!!! Wow! I was at the Vegas show 2 days before this show and my god it was a religious experience!!! I go to church every time U2 comes goes on concert

  • This song sounds like the modern rock version of a gospel song.

    Anyone agree?

I like this live piece more than the one on the album.

  • I agree it sounds like modern gospel. It's also very inclusive and really goes deep.

  • Totally Agree!

  • was at his concert in july and have places for 2010!!! YES !!!

  • Best Version Ever

    U2 4ever

  • mator79: I couldn't agree more. Most of the people in the US do not seem to appreciate real music anymore. We are now in a world of Miley Cyrus, Jonas Brothers, Brittany Spears etc. It is extremely disappointing. This is one of the greatest songs I have ever listened to and the greatest lyrical performance I have ever heard. It is unfortunate that so few ears will hear such a masterpiece. Maybe someday along the road this song will be heard everywhere. It certainly deserves to be.

  • Not unless people like P. Diddy or Mary J Blige (spell check) pick it up for there next album and there fans swear by all thats holy that they made this song. But no sweat. This'll be a hidden gem for open minded people to discover when they're ready.

  • I disagree,

Well Britney spears and all those pop music aren't my taste but just because they are produced to sell sell sell doesn't mean that it can't be enjoyed. It's always good to raise the atmosphere if you have those cheesy pop songs once in a while!

  • muito top top

  • I WAS NUMBER 754 IN THE RING!!

    THIS WAS THE CLOSING SONG

I WAS SINGING IT ON THE RIDE BACK HOME

this version pwns the album version

  • Such a beautiful moment this is...

  • can't believe that this is NOT going to be a top 10 single

  • The band U2 as Dog Savanna are the bands that I like to hear! Viva Rock!

  • 4 single from No Line on the Horizon?i hope it will be...GREAT GREAT SONG...

  • fffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffff just amaizinggggggggg

  • ....At the moment of surrender, I folded to my knees, I did no notice the passers-by and they didn't notice my...

  • u have to wear head phones when ur under the stage

  • when ur far away from the stage u can barely understand anything hes saying cuz of the amount of echo

  • Slightly shortened version, but still awesome. I've been impressed with how Bono's been able to deliver the vocal well in pretty much every show. He sounds amazing on Ultraviolet too.

  • Best band on the planet. Period

  • incredible song.
