If you look closely, you can see she moved quickly after the 300, then when asked to sprint when Boss saw Vinnie Roe alongside near the 200, she just went. Vinnie Roe showed great strength to gain ground late, but I think Makybe's main strength was her sharp turn of foot. Lot's of horses (Zipping, Master O'Reilly etc) can sprint late, but Makybe had a knack of accelerating instantly and ending the race about 100m short.
Most horses grind over long distances. Diva was able to sprint and gap other horses quickly at the end of the races. Something that is very rarely seen in distance races
Vinnie Roe was a certainty beaten. He was 3 wide the whole way and about 7 wide on the turn. Makybe Diva never left left the the fence at any stage and only beat him a length and a half. Punters who backed Vinnie Roe were absolutely livid with Pat Smullen.
@wha65 7 wide my ass... and not all horses can be on the fence, glenn boss was just better ... as for makybe diva, she did what she had to do, if vinnie roe pushed more makybe would have given more.... you cant say vinnie roe would have won if such and such happened, because we dont know, all we know is makybe diva and glenn boss were the best on the day and thats that
Awesome Makebe Diva, what a legend! RIP, Mummify --- the 2003 Caulfield Cup winner only finished 19th here in Melbourne Cup 2004 and was euthanized after breaking his leg when finished 3rd in Caulfield Cup 2005.
@OZCatch you would not see another mare as good a stayer as she was... at 6 years of age and winning 3 cups at 3200 metres and still running at the end... she was such a cool character she may not be the best now but in her day she was close to it....
@circusgal44 i said the the melbourne cup isn't the biggest horse race, its ONE of the biggest. i didn't mention maybe diva. no shit 3 in a row is no little feat, its fucken huge.
@OZCatch the original poster also didnt say it was the greatest race... europe takes that but i wont be suprised if the melbourne cup does become one of the bigger international races with the increasing amount of international runnners
@circusgal44 yeah, it will become an international dominated race, the first 7 runners this year were international. its alot of prize money, attracts alot of people.

Greatest horse race on the planet.
And that mare, she's a champion, and she knows it.

Oh my goodness. 24 horses! What classic race could have more competitors?
I thought the Kentucky Derby had the most horses of any major horse race in the world. This has changed my thoughts completely.
