  • Love this lady.

  • y is it that every time i hear a song in a different language its like epic

  • Listen to Finbar Fureys version

  • i hate wen people call the irish language gaeilic like the ancient irish tradition. i live in ireland, im irish, i learn irish in school nd we all call it irsh not gaelic or if we're speaking irish:gailge, not gaelic: makes ireland sound all old fashioned and behind :/ love this song tho, been hearing it in school since i was about 4! :)

  • @97footprints how is it behind the times? thats what its called.

  • @mactire246 well i only ever call it irish or gaeilge...

  • @97footprints can you explain to me why English is used at all in Irish schools? I fail to understand why you use a foreign language, especially of a country which suppressed you for so many years.

Also - her accent here to me sounds like it has an English accent, compared to say - the Clancy Brothers, the vowel sounds here sound English.

  • @alexpjp Well ideally our 1st language wud be irish but wen england controled Ireland they forced their rules, traditions +language on us:most of it stuck. children had to be raised with English coz england made it the official language of ireland. It wud be impractical to re-introduce irish as our 1st language as generations have now been raised w/ english.I dont mind tho, i like 2 much english/american music/TV but i'm proud of bein irish +can still hav simple conversation in irish. :)

  • @97footprints

No. just the Irish people are too lazy to actually learn it's mother tongue.

  • @MrJoshuaPadraig r u calling me lazy? u dont even know me.I would love to be fluent in irish and maybe i will be someday but right now i hav too much other shite to be learning so for now i'm just concentrating on getting good marks in my exams. the irish culture is still very much alive, just because we speak english doesn't mean we're lazy, it's because, as i sed, english is now our first and natural language, theres no practical way to reintroduce a toungue that the Brits worked so hard 2 end

  • @MrJoshuaPadraig

I'm not calling you lazy I mean were too lazy to learn it. I mean it's compulsory to learn it in School but majority of students never learn it fluently maybe the basics, but we can't walk around Dublin, Cork etc and speak it like we speak English in our day to day live, this is due to the lack of motivation and ambitions to re-instate a language into our society.

  • @alexpjp

It's compulsory to learn Irish in Ireland, so children will rebel against what is compulsory. If it was they choice to learn maybe it would have more success.

I was born to Irish parents from the Gaeltacht in Co.Roscommon , I was brought up with it. It's my first language, but when I go to Dublin and speak Irish people ask me to speak English because they do not understand Irish.

  • @97footprints and on the front of ur Irish text book what did it say? Gaeilge. well mine did

  • Comment removed

  • @irishman822 yeah mine says gaeilge :)

  • is maith liom bonya... all i have to say on the matter

  • As an Ulster speaker (ach líofa lofa agam)... just saying "Munster" is not entirely correct, but close enough to get the gist.

She's singing in An Caighdeán Oifigiúil (The Official Standard) aka "School Irish" with a few words said more in the Munster style to help with the rhyme and meter.

The author, Pádraig Pearse spoke Leinster dialect as he learned it from his aunt Margaret and wife (the dialect itself is now extinct since the 40s). As a southern dialect, it was closest to Munster.

  • @EddieEssence yes it is the munster irish .i no this because i live in munster i go to an all irish school and we got thaught oro se do bheath abhaile last year i love this song. btw their are four differnt irish lanuages south, east, west and north the norths is very confusing compared to the south becayse my teacher is from the north. and my mam knows the east.
