I'm pretty sure that if James Brown hadn't endorsed Richard Nixon we would've ALL heard "Spank" on the radio 'round-the-clock--not to mention other funk-bombs like "Eyesight" and "Bodyheat." His campaigning for Republicans distanced JB from youth culture from '75-'78. "Get Up Offa' That Thing" would be his last hurrah until "It's Too Funky In Here" in '79. Ironically, '74 was a HUGE commercial year for him: "Payback" would be his first million-selling album. "Funky Pres."/"My Thang" No. 1 hits.
That dude is right, THIS IS DEFINITIVELY ONE OF THE BEST 100 TRACKS OF THE 70s, considering how much SOUL and FUNK came out in the DECADE OF THE MILLENNIUM, that is the same as being called GOD it'self. It is amazing that it came out in 1978, so many GREAT albums OF ALL TIME CAME OUT IN THAT YEAR, including Barry Whites, Ojays, Heaven and Earth, But I still get as excited now, when I see that year, in a record collection, as I did 20 years ago. As I also do ON FINDING A GREAT NEW RECORD, SPANK
Hi again, i just read some of the other posts, and they are right, I probably have'nt heard it before because no one was playing it on the radio, I hear all his classics all the time, on pirate radio, BUT EVEN THEY DON'T PLAY THIS, It is so WEIRD that at my age,(no chance),I come across such a FUCKING GREAT TRACK, and I feel just like I did when I was 21 again, as if I was born to get my high from FUNK MUSIC, especially the JAMES BROWN version of FUNK, WOW, i'll be funkin to J B when i'm a 100
This fuckin remix is the BOMB, what makes it even better is I heard it for the first time, I know your probably saying ' why ain't you got the album already ', all can say is that the likes of 'Barkays','Sun','Lakeside','Chocolate Milk','Mtume','Slave','Temptations' and 'Heaven and Earth', And all the 12inch funk in the 80s, kept me happy on the heavy funk groove. But that extended 'Spank' mix has made me do a little readjusting,My favourite tracks are RAPPAYBACK-WHERZ MOSES, and SUPERBAD
Holy shishkabob: It seems like all the dance floor shakers bootays would be extremely raw from all the extended spanking being beat down on them from the Godfather's Number One You Tube Fan. Good Gawd.
Ohhhhhhhhhh, now HERE we go! One of the Godfathers best studio songs of all time!! Too bad the idiots at black (and pop) radio basically stopped playing his songs after 1976. This is the BOMB! Unquestionably the best song by far on the 'Jam 1980's' album and one of my top ten JB studio jams of all time!
The bridge @ 5:15 may be, to me, his best bridge of all time!
What is that tambourine sound in there? I don't recall that from any of the various versions of the original studio cut I've heard. Nice fade at the end, although I thought you would end it with a bang! Goes to show that not only are you the BEST JB video poster on Youtube but you are also the most unpredictable!
I remixed this to run more like our British release version, which was for some reason, much better than the American releases (two parts I hjad to string tofether hear. On the British release of the album, this track was one long, hunk of funk, as I've tried to reproduce here.
The bridge at 5:15 is actually the two bridges on the single versions strung together!
The tambourine? My video editor has a button marked "Stereo Wider". I notice when I use that, it brings out certain instrumentation I've never heard on either the records, or even on the cd' releases. The original studio engineers may often have their reasons for "muting" certain sounds on the track, but I wanna hear them all the same.
I did a tremix of "Problems" and brought the guitars so far in front that you woudn't be able to stand it!
@PaulDA2000 Black radio DEFINITELY didn't play it (or "Nature") all that much. A real shame considering it was just as funky as the records they were playing. Ageism definitely had a factor (he was 45 when this came out).
@timmy841212 I remember when the single was out. Our local AM r&b station (that's all we had then) was pretty loyal to JB in his '70s slump, but I don't recall hearing "The Spank" at all on the radio. In fact, my ONLY memory was seeing it played on "Soul Train." Once.
