  • They are two separate people. Kevin Eldridge in San Luis Obispo and Kevin Eldridge of Chico, no relation.

  • MT Props are wonderful, it was a crankshaft. The aircraft WAS NOT Tailheavy. Whoever filmed this needs to go to flight school. A prop weighs 12 pounds bro. Not gonna make much of a difference on the CG at all. I saw Miss Ashley II crash this same way, except the broken prop cut the horizontal stab off and slashed the vertical stab. Sad way to go, but that's what makes it a thrill.

    I’m the one who was filming and the guys who were commenting were race pilots from the same race class. It wasn’t a crankshaft issue it was an oil line that broke free causing the engine to seize and the prop (a new non-counter balanced race prop) to go flat/over speed until it exploded off the engine, everything from the end of the crankshaft forward was gone, so it wasn’t just the prop but a whole lot of other stuff gone from the front of the aircraft.

    Oh and about the Miss Ashley II crash, I don’t know where you got that info but the prop never came off, it was a structural failure in the tail.

  • I was there for both it is the same person they have just spelled his name wrong in one of the articles is all and to verify you can type both spellings in a bio search and it comes up the same person and also did photo search and with both Kevin Eldridge and Kevin Eldredge it shows both of them with the same plane Relentless and thank you for replying to comment nice to meet other race fanatics

    Hey Strega07, I just want to finally end this part of the discussion, they are two different people Kevin that owns and flies Relentless, Google his site @ kevineldredge

    And the Kevin that bailed out of the Super Corsair works for the Planes of Fame air museum where he works on and flies their aircraft Google Eldredge @ planes of fame - heritage flight

    I’m not trying to be a d**k about it I just wanted to clarify it.

  • Kevin Eldridge again? Didn´t he have enough adventure with the Super Corsair? Is bad luck chasing this man wherever he flies or is he just "an air-racer blaster"? Just kidding, of course! I know well enough that Kevin is a REAL professional; what strikes me is his apparent bad luck with air racers... Anyway, what odd aircraft is this?

    Alan, you're thinking of two different Kevin’s, the one who bailed out of the Super Corsair was in fact Kevin Eldridge but the one in this video is Kevin eldredge, people get them mixed up all the time.

None the less, isn´t it "curious" that two men of the same nationality, with such similar names, who display the same high skills on keeping damaged aircraft under control (as long as they can) had such shocking engine-related incidents, in both cases, with air racers? To me, there seem to be too many coincidences indeed...

    That's very true and it's too bad that Kevin wasn't in a position to save the Corsair, but at least he made it out alive. Also, from what I've heard, they never even found his helmet after the bail out.

  • @Voodoo1650 Probably the helmet harnesses might have broken when Kevin hit the Corsair tail as he bailed out, and the helmet departed from his head then. I´ve always wondered whether he would´ve tried an landed the Corsair if he were in a good position (and with enough height and speed) to try. But it seems that when problems started, the plane lost speed rapidly, so the landing gear down would´ve probably slowed it down even more to an almost complete stall, making it fall stone-like...

  • @Voodoo1650 I was just thinking, when K. Eldridge started having problems with his Corsair (apparently, because of a new yet defective piston), it seems that he began to lose speed fast, and the cockpit started to fill with smoke. I guess that with the canopy open and in a good position to try an emergency landing, he might see clear enough to give it a try. But, would the landing gear come down with that massive flame? If he shut the engine off and tried gliding, would the fire come off?

    The main reason he was in a hurry to bail out was that the rudder and elevators on that plane were fabric covered and were in the process of burning away, so he wanted to get out before he lost all control of the aircraft. Even if he killed what was left of the engine the fire was raging so bad it wouldn’t have helped unfortunately. I really liked that plane and it was hard to watch go in, but at least he was able get out.

  • The MT prop being as light as it is, and completely separating from the aircraft, is what saved Kevin's butt... the entire engine was torn off the mounts inside the cowling. Had that been a metal prop, the entire engine assembly probably would have departed the airframe, rendering Nemesis completely uncontrollable due to the CG change. Good flying by Kevin for sure.
