I actually agonised over this for almost my entire playthrough, mostly because choosing one side over the other meant potentially hurting good people who didn't deserve it, but in the end I sided with the Empire. Ulfric comes off as earnest in his belief in freedom for Skyrim, but he also comes off like he'd be a terrible king and then of course, SKyrim breaking from the Empire would leave them both weakened when the Thalmor come again

@sirinterweb As for the matter of Talos, well I take the long view on this. The ban on Talos worship was accepted by the Empire, purely to buy time to rebuild and recover after the great war. Such bans of worship are temporary things, but Gods are forever. There will be another war with the Thalmor and when it comes, you can bet Imperial troops are going to be bellowing Talos' name when they charge.
