It's so funny how history can sometimes repeat itself. I remember as a child my mom would play this song over and over crying. She has gone home to be with the Lord and I find myself reminiscing and crying. I guess children live what they learn.
Many ruvers to cross es una gran canción, aunque no veo nada de referencia a la discriminación contra los negros. Según dice la letra parece una canción de alguien abandonado por la mujer que ama.
One of the main upsetting factors today is that black people will sometimes have to work twice as hard. We are still 'mocked' by slavery and while there is better equality its not enough. Generally speaking, black people will always have to work twice as hard to cross those rivers. But with pride and hope we shall get there.
@carlorowe I agree with your comment 100%! The main purpose of the word 'equality' is to prevent litigation! Unfortunately for blacks, life is always one big struggle especially when you are living in a white man's world and under white man's rules!
@carlorowe Really? Where do you live?.... I lived in LA.. never heard anyone 'mock' blacks or slavery. And that was 1990's...... Generally speaking black people will always use slavery as an excuse. People got to grow up! Talking about yo Bitches and yo Hos.... Yo Brother! Grow Up! Treat your women right....You want equality? Never gonna get it until you you stop calling women bitches and hos....
@carlorowe Am sorry for you black people living in other races worlds and your are treated as minority or lower class. I live were black is the Majority so i cant relate to what you are saying man. i don't have to work twice as hard but deal with the evils of our own black people which are jealousy, envy, corruption, lack of self esteem and all that shit that blacks naturally have...Africa is where am at and Blacks are f**king kings out here man.
@Theloniaboy I remember Ricks... use to tie up the dingy at the cliffs...really hard on the dingy. But Rick was a friend... haven't seen him in forever. Remember the market in Sav?? We had a Camaro & filled it to the roof with potato, yam, salad & oranges to stock the kitchen at the old Yacht Club. Glad to have seen it before the resorts took over.
@TheLilibelle - yup, remember sav when wild pigs roamed the street, rember cottage on the rocks w/ george & his memorable stove next door to u, then formed birchrunville south up the road...

My best friend sang this song to me before I moved 6,000 miles away. It seemed so fitting. This song will be with me forever now and I'm gonna sing it to her once I see her face again. x
This is the Jamaica I remember. I know things change, but sometimes we dont realize how amazing our past was till we cant get it again. The simpleness of JA, the beauty of the island and the peace it brings to you. Gods Country. Grew up in JA in the 1970's, went to C-Bar, St Andrews Parish Church and lived in Kingston. Many AMAZING memories of my youth in paradise.Curry Goat, Bullah, Peppa Shrimp, Patties, Roast Fish, Manning Cup, Champs, Festival, Dunns River,, Hope Gardens, Ochi, Christmas
You know I was living at Moorlands, close to Mandeville with my brother and mom(God Has her now) and dad. I was between age 4-7(almost 59 now). My folks were missionaries in Jamaica for bout 4 years. We had a green truck and showed Gospel/Christian movie films across the island. Sometimes to places only the donkey go, we found place to say "Thank You" to the most wonderful people. To this day I still reflect the almost 4 years I had as a child in Jamaica as unforgettable. Vid bring memory bak!
stokey72, knew the Jacksons when they had the boarding house up in redground, nice people. I have searched America and never had chickin like it's served at chickin lavish. Negrils not the same as it was in the old days but what is ? Someday the forces that hold Jamaica back will be gone and then everyone will have the chance to prosper.
This song is so deep, especially the circumstances that inspired it. Jimmy is a strong man for real. It makes me want to cry every time I hear it. it was my high school graduation song too.
First time to Negril was xmas 72.. 12 trips later I have never looked at life the same again. Sav La Mar market on Saturday morning, nothing like it. Someone mentioned the Yacht Club and Rasta George, great memories, great people. Love to stop at Chickin delicious one more time.........soon come. Anyone remember jumping off the cliffs out by Ricks ?

I had a Jamaican Uncle who married into my UK white family circa 1980 and even as a youngster remember him being put down by relatives. Little do those elders who have since passed away know of the peace and tolerance he instilled in us as children when apart from the racist elders. A hero in his own right and my very own Jimmy Cliff. Bless.

Crossed many rivers in many parts of the world, mostly in my younger years.
Maybe rivers do have a life apart from humans, but still provide for all of us, as the poets write about.
I will never lose sight of them, as I've found it imposible to drive over a bridge without giving the river a look. The each have their own certain beauty.
@rockinroller7 - ah rivers, river crossings, bridges, covered bridges all have a special place in my heart of memories…hope you take peek at some of my "Time Reverie" videos, visual focus on as Loggins & Messianacdid: "Watching The River Run."
The internet is capable of doing what our leaders cannot do. We bring nations together and people of all walks of life with a common bond of music. Wouldn't it be nice if we fought with music instead of bullets. This type of music would certainly be at the top of the pile. I close my eyes and dream of time gone by, and the good things in life that I should be thankful for. Then i carry on with my day.
@peteselwin Was there in 1972.73,74,75,76,77. No phones in Negril, just ship to shore radios. Had to bus it to Sav La Mar for phone booth. Not a hotel on the beach, stayed with Doris in her bungalows, who is long gone, her son's Clive and the other one built her land all up with crap. I will never go back. Also knew a sculptor, Williamson, a Rasta, 10 Mile Bull Bay, aka 10 miles west of Kingston. Those were the days to go to Jamaica. Sorry for all of you who missed those days.
In 1985, 3 1/2 minutes of super 8 film cost about $10 and another $5 - $15 to get it processed. So these videos, I'm sure, weren't cheap. And converting them to digital is also a feat. Much love for bringing my country back to me.
I love Jamaica as much as life itself. Glad you all enjoyed it too.
@BedStuyBro - I have many older Jamaica videos on youtube, you might like...3 cover an adventure deep into a bat cave where local youth made music by banging stagtites w 2 x 4s- & much more. Also have old videos of Red Survival, oldest Rasta in Negril, playing his guitar as a percussion instrament (roots...) and singing wonderful original songs, likewise Cat I perfect pitch and drummer...
this was my grandads favourite song we played it at his funeral aling with 3 little birds.....he loved reggae and loved african music lol love you grandad....:)
Like reggae? You’ll love this! Mainstreet Dubsacks, Small time struggling reggae/ska group, in comparison to Sublime and Slightly Stoopid, These guys rock! Give them a chance! You wont regret doing so!!
Together we will cross this river...and all the others that we come upon....hand in hand supporting one another.....you are the other half of me....and we will walk together..or swim together....and conquer whatever the day delivers.....I love you....
I like all music mainly stuff that is not of this genre infact the complete opposite.... HOWEVER, there is no other singer out there with a voice like Jimmy Cliffs.
@tiptopsound - At the time I wrote that, I was 70. Now I'm 73. I have an extensive 40 year collection collection of videos that I have shot. This 1980ish video is one of them. So this collection being exhibeted helps document my first 73 years in America. It is an ongoing process.

Also have old videos of Red Survival, oldest Rasta in Negril, playing his guitar as a percussion instrament (roots...) and singing wonderful original songs, likewise Cat I perfect pitch and drummer...

I really like good music, not the stuff of these days...
This is your case too? Nice! You'd like to check out my new channel, MariosSoul.
It's all about good, REAL music! You won't be able to find any Lady Caca nor Justin Bieber vids. there (NO WAY).
Feel invited to relive the old days with songs from the 50 ', 60', 70 ', 80's and more!
Long live Rock & Roll!

What does "My first 70 years in America" mean?
tiptopsound 1 year ago
@tiptopsound - At the time I wrote that, I was 70. Now I'm 73. I have an extensive 40 year collection collection of videos that I have shot. This 1980ish video is one of them. So this collection being exhibeted helps document my first 73 years in America. It is an ongoing process.
Thank you for noticing.
