What's with the need for everyone to categorize music? Punk isn't necessarily a music, it's an attitude. And it can be found in the earliest rock n roll, rockabilly, surf rock, garage rock, freakbeat, "proto" punk, "punk" proper, hardcore, power pop, and even some pop-punk. Is there a typified punk sound? Yes. But anyone who knows modern music history can see a common lineage and transcend the general confines of what most know as "punk" to see the parallels. You can backtrack almost endlessly.
